Agreement in Reflexive and Reciprocal Pronouns
Master reciprocal pronouns each other versus one another and reflexive pronoun agreement with compound subjects and prepositional modifiers in English syntax.
Understanding Mutual and Reflective Actions
When two friends meet at a railway station and shake hands, a specific kind of exchange takes place. The first friend extends a hand to the second friend, and the second friend simultaneously extends a hand to the first friend. The action does not stop with one person, nor does it bounce back onto the person who started it. Instead, the action moves back and forth between both individuals.
In the previous lesson, we analyzed how actions can turn backward to target the doer through reflexive pronouns like himself and themselves. A reflective action is like looking straight into a mirror, where your own image bounces directly back to you. However, when an action flows mutually between two or more distinct participants, standard reflexive pronouns cannot express that two-way relationship.
To capture this shared exchange accurately, English relies on a specialized category known as Reciprocal Pronouns. Understanding how reciprocal pronouns function, how they contrast with reflexive pronouns, and how both categories maintain strict grammatical agreement across complex sentence architectures is essential for constructing flawless English sentences.
Reciprocal Pronouns and Mutual Relationships
A reciprocal relationship exists when two or more participants carry out the identical action toward one another. If person A helps person B, and person B also helps person A, the help is mutual.
In everyday conversation, you might express this concept in your mother tongue using a single universal phrase. In Tamil, speakers use ஒருவருக்கொருவர் (oruvarukkoruvar) or தம்முள் (thammul). In Hindi, speakers rely on एक-दूसरे (ek-doosre) or आपस में (aapas mein). While vernacular languages comfortably use these identical phrases whether two people or ten people are involved, standard English draws a sharp grammatical line based on the exact count of entities.
English provides two specific reciprocal pronouns to manage these relationships: each other and one another.
The Dual Entity Rule: Each Other
The phrase each other is reserved strictly for situations involving exactly two people, animals, or things. When an action flows between a pair of entities, each other must be selected.
Consider two tennis players competing in a tournament final. When the match ends, they walk up to the net and congratulate each other. Because exactly two players are involved in this mutual greeting, each other is grammatically mandatory.
- Correct: The two sisters support each other during difficult times.
சரியானது: கடினமான காலங்களில் அந்த இரு சகோதரிகளும் ஒருவருக்கொருவர் ஆதரவளிக்கிறார்கள் (The two sisters support each other during difficult times.) सही: दोनों बहनें मुश्किल समय में एक-दूसरे (each other) का समर्थन करती हैं। - Incorrect: The two sisters support one another during difficult times.
தவறானது: The two sisters support one another during difficult times. (இரண்டு நபர்களுக்கு இடையே one another பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது தவறு) गलत: दो व्यक्तियों के लिए one another का प्रयोग अशुद्ध है (The two sisters support one another during difficult times.)।
Notice that both sisters give and receive support. The subject consists of two entities, making each other the only acceptable choice under formal grammatical standards.
The Multiple Entity Rule: One Another
When the mutual exchange involves more than two people, animals, or items, standard English syntax shifts from each other to one another.
Imagine a study group of five classmates working on a science project. Every student shares notes with all other group members. Because the circle of participants exceeds two individuals, the reciprocal relationship requires one another.
- Correct: All five committee members consulted one another before taking a decision.
சரியானது: ஒரு முடிவை எடுப்பதற்கு முன் ஐந்து குழு உறுப்பினர்களும் ஒருவருக்கொருவர் கலந்தாலோசித்தனர் (All five committee members consulted one another before taking a decision.) सही: समिति के सभी पाँचों सदस्यों ने निर्णय लेने से पहले एक-दूसरे (one another) से सलाह ली। - Incorrect: All five committee members consulted each other before taking a decision.
தவறானது: All five committee members consulted each other before taking a decision. (இரண்டுக்கும் மேற்பட்ட நபர்களுக்கு each other என்பது தவறானது) गलत: दो से अधिक सदस्यों के लिए each other का प्रयोग अशुद्ध है (All five committee members consulted each other…)।
Similarly, consider a football team comprising eleven athletes:
- Correct: The players passed the ball to one another across the pitch.
சரியானது: மைதானத்தில் வீரர்கள் ஒருவருக்கொருவர் பந்தைப் பரிமாறிக்கொண்டனர் (The players passed the ball to one another across the pitch.) सही: खिलाड़ियों ने मैदान पर एक-दूसरे (one another) को गेंद पास की। - Incorrect: The players passed the ball to each other across the pitch.
தவறானது: The players passed the ball to each other across the pitch. (பதினொரு வீரர்களைக் கொண்ட அணிக்கு each other பயன்படுத்துவது தவறு) गलत: दो से अधिक खिलाड़ियों के लिए each other का प्रयोग अशुद्ध है (The players passed the ball to each other…)।
Whenever the antecedent represents three or more distinct components, one another establishes the appropriate collective reciprocity.
Possessive Forms of Reciprocal Pronouns
Just like personal nouns, reciprocal pronouns can indicate ownership or possession. When you want to state that two or more people share or exchange items belonging to them, you must convert the reciprocal pronoun into its possessive form.
To form the possessive case of a reciprocal pronoun, always add an apostrophe followed by the letter s (‘s) to the very end of the second word:
- each other’s (possessive form for two entities)
each other’s (இரண்டு நபர்களுக்கான உடமை வடிவம்) each other’s (दो इकाइयों के लिए possessive रूप) - one another’s (possessive form for more than two entities)
one another’s (இரண்டுக்கும் மேற்பட்ட நபர்களுக்கான உடமை வடிவம்) one another’s (दो से अधिक इकाइयों के लिए possessive रूप)
- Correct: Rohan and Priya borrowed each other’s notebooks.
சரியானது: ரோகனும் பிரியாவும் ஒருவருடைய குறிப்பேட்டை மற்றவர் இரவலாகப் பெற்றனர் (Rohan and Priya borrowed each other’s notebooks.) सही: रोहन और प्रिया ने एक-दूसरे की (each other’s) नोटबुक उधार लीं। - Incorrect: Rohan and Priya borrowed each others’ notebooks.
தவறானது: Rohan and Priya borrowed each others’ notebooks. (s-க்கு பிறகு அப்போஸ்ட்ரபி வைப்பது தவறு) गलत: s के बाद apostrophe लगाना अशुद्ध है (Rohan and Priya borrowed each others’ notebooks.)। - Incorrect: Rohan and Priya borrowed each other notebooks.
தவறானது: Rohan and Priya borrowed each other notebooks. (உடமை குறிக்கும் ‘s விடுபட்டுள்ளது) गलत: possessive marker (‘s) के बिना प्रयोग अशुद्ध है (Rohan and Priya borrowed each other notebooks.)।
Placing the apostrophe after the s (such as each others’) or writing eachother as a single combined word represents an invalid grammatical construction. The base word remains other, and the standard singular possessive marker ‘s attaches directly to it.
Likewise, when dealing with more than two entities:
- Correct: The delegates listened carefully to one another’s opinions.
சரியானது: பிரதிநிதிகள் ஒருவருடைய கருத்துகளை மற்றவர் கவனமாகக் கேட்டறிந்தனர் (The delegates listened carefully to one another’s opinions.) सही: प्रतिनिधियों ने ध्यानपूर्वक एक-दूसरे के (one another’s) विचारों को सुना। - Incorrect: The delegates listened carefully to one anothers’ opinions.
தவறானது: The delegates listened carefully to one anothers’ opinions. (one anothers’ என எழுதுவது பிழையானது) गलत: s के बाद apostrophe लगाना अशुद्ध है (The delegates listened carefully to one anothers’ opinions.)।
Syntactical Constraints and Positioning Rules
Understanding where a pronoun belongs inside a sentence is just as critical as selecting the correct form. Reciprocal pronouns operate under strict structural limitations within English syntax.
The Prohibition of Reciprocal Pronouns as Subjects
A fundamental rule of sentence architecture states that reciprocal pronouns can never serve as grammatical subjects. They function exclusively as objects, either receiving the direct action of a transitive verb or completing the meaning of a preposition.
Because a reciprocal pronoun requires a prior plural or compound antecedent to give it meaning, it cannot initiate an action or stand alone before the finite verb.
- Incorrect: During the debate, each other presented strong arguments.
தவறானது: During the debate, each other presented strong arguments. (each other என்பது Subject-ஆக வர முடியாது) गलत: each other का प्रयोग Subject के रूप में अमान्य है (During the debate, each other presented strong arguments.)। - Correct: During the debate, the candidates presented strong arguments to each other.
சரியானது: விவாதத்தின் போது, வேட்பாளர்கள் ஒருவருக்கொருவர் வலுவான வாதங்களை முன்வைத்தனர் (During the debate, the candidates presented strong arguments to each other.) सही: बहस के दौरान, उम्मीदवारों ने एक-दूसरे (each other) के सामने ठोस तर्क प्रस्तुत किए। - Incorrect: After the match, one another exchanged congratulations.
தவறானது: After the match, one another exchanged congratulations. (one another என்பது Subject இடத்தில் வரக்கூடாது) गलत: one another का प्रयोग Subject के रूप में अमान्य है (After the match, one another exchanged congratulations.)। - Correct: After the match, the players congratulated one another.
சரியானது: போட்டி முடிந்ததும் வீரர்கள் ஒருவருக்கொருவர் வாழ்த்துக்களைப் பரிமாறிக்கொண்டனர் (After the match, the players congratulated one another.) सही: मैच के बाद, खिलाड़ियों ने एक-दूसरे (one another) को बधाई दी।
Whenever you need a subject to represent multiple people performing a mutual action, you must use a standard subject noun or personal pronoun like they, the students, or both leaders, and place the reciprocal pronoun in the object position.
Reflexive Versus Reciprocal Distinction
A frequent source of syntactical confusion occurs when writers mistakenly interchange reflexive pronouns (themselves, ourselves) with reciprocal pronouns (each other, one another). While both categories involve plural subjects, the direction of the action is entirely different.
A reflexive pronoun indicates that the subjects are acting on themselves individually. A reciprocal pronoun indicates that the subjects are acting on one another across a mutual exchange.
Consider the following pair of sentences:
- The two brothers looked at themselves in the mirror.
The two brothers looked at themselves in the mirror. (இரு சகோதரர்களும் கண்ணாடியில் தங்களைத் தாங்களே பார்த்துக் கொண்டனர்.) दोनों भाइयों ने दर्पण में खुद को (themselves) देखा। - The two brothers looked at each other in the courtyard.
The two brothers looked at each other in the courtyard. (இரு சகோதரர்களும் முற்றத்தில் ஒருவரையொருவர் பார்த்துக் கொண்டனர்.) दोनों भाइयों ने आँगन में एक-दूसरे को (each other) देखा।
In the first sentence, brother A looks at his own reflection, and brother B looks at his own reflection. The action turns inward. In the second sentence, brother A looks directly at brother B, and brother B looks directly at brother A. The action crosses between them.
Analogy · Mirror Reflection and Badminton Rally Expand analogy
A reflexive pronoun works like looking into a dressing table mirror, where the light hits the glass and reflects back onto you alone. A reciprocal pronoun works like a badminton rally between two players, where the shuttlecock travels back and forth across the net from one person to the other.
Using themselves when the intended meaning is a mutual exchange creates a completely different, often unintended interpretation.
Reflexive Pronoun Agreement Across Complex Structures
A reflexive pronoun cannot exist independently. It derives its grammatical person, number, and gender entirely from the noun or pronoun that serves as its subject in the same clause. When sentences become structurally intricate, identifying the true governing subject is essential for selecting the correct reflexive form.
Reflexive Agreement with Compound Subjects
When two or more subjects are connected by the coordinating conjunction and, they form a compound subject. The choice of the reflexive pronoun depends on the highest person present in the compound subject based on grammatical hierarchy:
-
First Person Dominance: If the compound subject includes a first-person pronoun (I or we), the combined unit functions as first-person plural (we). Consequently, the reflexive pronoun must be ourselves.
தன்மை இடத்தின் முன்னுரிமை (First Person Dominance): கூட்டு எழுவாயில் தன்மைப் பிரதிப்பெயர்ச்சொல் (I அல்லது we) இடம்பெற்றிருந்தால், அந்த முழு அமைப்பும் தன்மைப் பன்மையாகவே (we) செயல்படுகிறது. எனவே, அதற்குரிய Reflexive Pronoun கட்டாயமாக ourselves என்றே இருக்க வேண்டும். First Person की प्रधानता: यदि compound subject में first-person pronoun (I या we) शामिल है, तो संयुक्त इकाई first-person plural (we) के रूप में कार्य करती है। परिणामस्वरूप, reflexive pronoun ourselves होना चाहिए। - Correct: Rohan and I prepared ourselves for the interview.
சரியானது: ரோகனும் நானும் நேர்காணலுக்கு எங்களைத் தயார்படுத்திக் கொண்டோம் (Rohan and I prepared ourselves for the interview.) सही: रोहन और मैंने साक्षात्कार के लिए खुद को (ourselves) तैयार किया। - Incorrect: Rohan and I prepared myself for the interview.
தவறானது: Rohan and I prepared myself for the interview. (கூட்டு எழுவாய்க்கு myself பொருந்தாது) गलत: compound subject के लिए myself का प्रयोग अमान्य है (Rohan and I prepared myself…)। - Incorrect: Rohan and I prepared themselves for the interview.
தவறானது: Rohan and I prepared themselves for the interview. (தன்மை இடம் உள்ளதால் themselves வராது) गलत: first-person शामिल होने पर themselves का प्रयोग अमान्य है (Rohan and I prepared themselves…)।
- Correct: Rohan and I prepared ourselves for the interview.
-
Second Person Dominance: If the compound subject includes a second-person pronoun (you) combined with a third-person noun or pronoun, the combined unit functions as second-person plural (you all). The reflexive pronoun must be yourselves.
Second Person की प्रधानता: यदि compound subject में third-person noun या pronoun के साथ second-person pronoun (you) शामिल है, तो संयुक्त इकाई second-person plural (you all) के रूप में कार्य करती है। यहाँ reflexive pronoun yourselves होना चाहिए। - Correct: You and Priya must defend yourselves against these allegations.
சரியானது: நீங்களும் பிரியாவும் இந்த குற்றச்சாட்டுகளுக்கு எதிராக உங்களைத் தற்காத்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டும் (You and Priya must defend yourselves against these allegations.) सही: आपको और प्रिया को इन आरोपों के विरुद्ध अपना बचाव (yourselves) स्वयं करना होगा। - Incorrect: You and Priya must defend yourself against these allegations.
தவறானது: You and Priya must defend yourself against these allegations. (இருவரைக் குறிக்கும் போது ஒருமை yourself தவறு) गलत: दो व्यक्तियों के लिए एकवचन yourself का प्रयोग अशुद्ध है (You and Priya must defend yourself…)। - Incorrect: You and Priya must defend herself against these allegations.
தவறானது: You and Priya must defend herself against these allegations. (முன்னிலை இடம் உள்ளதால் herself வராது) गलत: you की उपस्थिति में केवल herself का प्रयोग अशुद्ध है (You and Priya must defend herself…)।
- Correct: You and Priya must defend yourselves against these allegations.
-
Third Person Plural: When two third-person entities are joined by and, the subject becomes plural (they). The required reflexive pronoun is themselves.
படர்க்கைப் பன்மை (Third Person Plural): இரண்டு படர்க்கைக் கூறுகள் and மூலம் இணைக்கப்படும்போது, அந்த Subject பன்மையாக (they) மாறுகிறது. எனவே, தேவையான Reflexive Pronoun themselves ஆகும். Third Person Plural: जब दो third-person इकाइयाँ and से जुड़ती हैं, तो subject बहुवचन (they) बन जाता है। इसके लिए आवश्यक reflexive pronoun themselves है। - Correct: The manager and the accountant excused themselves from the discussion.
சரியானது: மேலாளரும் கணக்காளரும் கலந்துரையாடலில் இருந்து தங்களை விடுவித்துக் கொண்டனர் (The manager and the accountant excused themselves from the discussion.) सही: प्रबंधक और लेखाकार ने चर्चा से खुद को (themselves) अलग कर लिया। - Incorrect: The manager and the accountant excused himself from the discussion.
தவறானது: The manager and the accountant excused himself from the discussion. (இருவர் இருக்கும்போது ஒருமை himself தவறு) गलत: दो व्यक्तियों के संयुक्त subject के लिए एकवचन himself का प्रयोग अशुद्ध है (The manager and the accountant excused himself…)।
- Correct: The manager and the accountant excused themselves from the discussion.
Reflexive Agreement with Prepositional Modifiers
Sentences often separate the subject from its verb using prepositional phrases or accompaniment connectors. These phrases typically begin with words like:
- along with
along with (உடன் / கூட) along with (के साथ) - as well as
as well as (மட்டுமல்லாமல் / மற்றும்) as well as (साथ ही साथ) - together with
together with (உடன் சேர்ந்து) together with (के साथ मिलकर) - in addition to
in addition to (கூடுதலாக) in addition to (के अलावा / के अतिरिक्त) - accompanied by
accompanied by (உடன் வர / இணைந்து) accompanied by (के साथ) - besides
besides (தவிர / மேலும்) besides (के अतिरिक्त / को छोड़कर)
In English syntax, nouns placed inside prepositional phrases act as objects of prepositions, not as grammatical subjects. Therefore, the reflexive pronoun must agree strictly with the first subject (the true subject), completely ignoring any nouns inside the accompaniment phrase.
Consider this example with a singular primary subject:
- Correct: The captain, along with the crew members, prepared himself for the turbulent voyage.
சரியானது: மாலுமிகளுடன் சேர்ந்து, கப்பல் தலைவர் கொந்தளிப்பான பயணத்திற்குத் தன்னைத் தயார்படுத்திக் கொண்டார் (The captain, along with the crew members, prepared himself for the turbulent voyage.) सही: कप्तान ने चालक दल के सदस्यों के साथ अशांत यात्रा के लिए स्वयं को (himself) तैयार किया। - Incorrect: The captain, along with the crew members, prepared themselves for the turbulent voyage.
தவறானது: The captain, along with the crew members, prepared themselves for the turbulent voyage. (ஒருமை முதன்மை Subject-க்கு themselves வராது) गलत: मुख्य subject एकवचन होने पर themselves का प्रयोग अमान्य है (The captain, along with the crew members, prepared themselves…)।
Even though the crew members represents a plural noun, it is governed by the prepositional connector along with. The true subject remains the singular noun The captain, demanding the singular reflexive pronoun himself.
Now examine the reverse situation where the primary subject is plural:
- Correct: The teachers, accompanied by the principal, organized themselves into relief committees.
சரியானது: முதல்வருடன் இணைந்து, ஆசிரியர்கள் நிவாரணக் குழுக்களாகத் தங்களை அமைத்துக் கொண்டனர் (The teachers, accompanied by the principal, organized themselves into relief committees.) सही: शिक्षकों ने प्रधानाचार्य के साथ मिलकर स्वयं को (themselves) राहत समितियों में संगठित किया। - Incorrect: The teachers, accompanied by the principal, organized himself into relief committees.
தவறானது: The teachers, accompanied by the principal, organized himself into relief committees. (பன்மை Subject-க்கு ஒருமை himself தவறு) गलत: मुख्य subject बहुवचन होने पर एकवचन himself का प्रयोग अशुद्ध है (The teachers, accompanied by the principal, organized himself…)।
Because the true subject The teachers is plural, the reflexive pronoun must be themselves, regardless of the singular noun principal appearing inside the modifying phrase.
Reflexive Agreement with Indefinite Pronouns
The indefinite pronoun one refers to people in general. When one acts as the subject of a sentence, it establishes a strict grammatical chain that must remain uniform throughout the entire clause.
The reflexive pronoun corresponding to the generic subject one is strictly oneself.
- Correct: One should always conduct oneself with dignity in public gatherings.
சரியானது: பொதுக் கூட்டங்களில் ஒருவர் எப்போதும் கண்ணியத்துடன் நடந்துகொள்ள வேண்டும் (One should always conduct oneself with dignity in public gatherings.) सही: सार्वजनिक सभाओं में व्यक्ति को हमेशा स्वयं को (oneself) गरिमा के साथ प्रस्तुत करना चाहिए। - Incorrect: One should always conduct himself with dignity in public gatherings.
தவறானது: One should always conduct himself with dignity in public gatherings. (one-க்கு பதிலாக himself வரக்கூடாது) गलत: one के साथ himself का प्रयोग अमान्य है (One should always conduct himself…)। - Incorrect: One should always conduct themselves with dignity in public gatherings.
தவறானது: One should always conduct themselves with dignity in public gatherings. (one-க்கு பதிலாக themselves பயன்படுத்துவது தவறு) गलत: one के साथ themselves का प्रयोग अमान्य है (One should always conduct themselves…)।
Shifting from one to himself or themselves violates syntactical agreement. The pronoun one requires its own dedicated reflexive form, oneself.
High-Frequency Error Traps and Misuse Patterns
Even experienced writers occasionally fall into syntactical traps when combining reflexive and reciprocal elements. Identifying these common error patterns reinforces correct structural habits.
The Reflexive Subject Fallacy
In spoken English across India, people often introduce themselves using a reflexive pronoun, saying phrases like “Myself Ramesh from Madurai” or “Myself Sunita.” Similarly, reflexive pronouns are frequently misplaced inside compound subjects.
This usage is grammatically incorrect. A reflexive pronoun can never serve as the subject of a verb because it has no nominative form and requires an antecedent to reflect back upon. When introducing yourself or performing an action as a subject, you must always use the subjective personal pronoun I.
- Incorrect: Myself will manage the registration desk today.
தவறானது: Myself will manage the registration desk today. (Myself என்பது Subject-ஆக வர முடியாது) गलत: Myself का प्रयोग Subject के रूप में अमान्य है (Myself will manage the registration desk today.)। - Correct: I will manage the registration desk today.
சரியானது: இன்று பதிவு மேசையை நான் நிர்வகிப்பேன் (I will manage the registration desk today.) सही: आज पंजीकरण डेस्क का प्रबंधन मैं (I) करूँगा। - Incorrect: Suresh and myself finalized the vendor contract.
தவறானது: Suresh and myself finalized the vendor contract. (கூட்டு எழுவாயில் myself தவறு) गलत: compound subject में myself का प्रयोग अशुद्ध है (Suresh and myself finalized…)। - Correct: Suresh and I finalized the vendor contract.
சரியானது: சுரேஷும் நானும் விற்பனையாளர் ஒப்பந்தத்தை இறுதி செய்தோம் (Suresh and I finalized the vendor contract.) सही: सुरेश और मैंने (Suresh and I) वेंडर अनुबंध को अंतिम रूप दिया।
A reliable way to test compound subjects is the isolation method. Remove the other person (Suresh and) from the sentence. You would never say “Myself finalized the vendor contract.” You would naturally say “I finalized the vendor contract.” Therefore, the compound form must be Suresh and I.
Redundant Reciprocal Pronouns with Inherently Mutual Verbs
Certain verbs in English already contain the idea of a mutual, two-way action within their core meaning. Verbs such as meet, collide, embrace, marry, and assemble inherently involve two or more participants acting together.
Adding each other or one another after these verbs creates unnecessary repetition, known as redundancy or tautology.
- Incorrect: The two express trains collided with each other near the junction.
தவறானது: The two express trains collided with each other near the junction. (collided என்பதில் பரஸ்பரப் பொருள் அடங்கியுள்ளதால் each other தேவையில்லை) गलत: collided के साथ each other का प्रयोग अनावश्यक दोहराव (Redundancy) है (The two express trains collided with each other…)। - Correct: The two express trains collided near the junction.
சரியானது: சந்திப்புக்கு அருகே இரண்டு விரைவு ரயில்களும் மோதிக்கொண்டன (The two express trains collided near the junction.) सही: जंक्शन के पास दो एक्सप्रेस ट्रेनें आपस में टकरा गईं (The two express trains collided near the junction.)। - Incorrect: Rahul and Ananya met with each other outside the library.
தவறானது: Rahul and Ananya met with each other outside the library. (met என்ற சொல்லுடன் each other வருவது சொல்மலிவு) गलत: met के साथ each other का प्रयोग अनावश्यक है (Rahul and Ananya met with each other…)। - Correct: Rahul and Ananya met outside the library.
சரியானது: ராகுலும் அனன்யாவும் நூலகத்திற்கு வெளியே சந்தித்தனர் (Rahul and Ananya met outside the library.) सही: राहुल और अनन्या पुस्तकालय के बाहर मिले (Rahul and Ananya met outside the library.)।
Reserve reciprocal pronouns for verbs that do not automatically imply mutual action. For example, in “They praised each other” or “They criticized one another,” the verbs praise and criticize are not inherently mutual, so the reciprocal pronoun is essential to show that the action flowed in both directions.
Distinguishing Each Other from Every Other
Do not confuse the reciprocal pronoun each other with the distributive phrase every other. While each other denotes a mutual exchange between two entities, every other indicates an alternating sequence or frequency, meaning every second item or interval.
- Reciprocal: The two business partners respect each other. (Mutual respect)
Reciprocal: அந்த இரு வணிகப் பங்காளிகளும் ஒருவரையொருவர் மதிக்கிறார்கள் (The two business partners respect each other. - பரஸ்பர மரியாதை) Reciprocal: दोनों व्यावसायिक साझेदार एक-दूसरे (each other) का सम्मान करते हैं (आपसी सम्मान)। - Alternating: The doctor visits the village clinic every other day. (On alternate days: Monday, Wednesday, Friday)
Alternating: மருத்துவர் கிராமத்து மருத்துவமனைக்கு ஒரு நாள் விட்டு ஒரு நாள் வருகை தருகிறார் (The doctor visits the village clinic every other day. - திங்கள், புதன், வெள்ளி போன்ற மாற்று நாட்களில்) Alternating: डॉक्टर एक दिन छोड़कर (every other day) गाँव के क्लिनिक में जाते हैं (वैकल्पिक दिनों में: सोमवार, बुधवार, शुक्रवार)।
Summary Comparison Table

| Number of Participants | Singular or plural (matches subject) | Always requires two or more participants |
| Subject Position Allowed? | Never (cannot function as grammatical subject) | Never (cannot function as grammatical subject) |
| Object Position Allowed? | Yes (direct object, indirect object, object of preposition) | Yes (direct object, indirect object, object of preposition) |
| Possessive Form | Expressed using possessive adjectives (my own, his own) | Formed with apostrophe-s (each other’s, one another’s) |
| Illustrative Example | The child dressed himself without any assistance. | The two children shared their crayons with each other. |
Key Takeaways
- Each other is used strictly for mutual exchanges between two entities, whereas one another is used when more than two entities are involved.
- Reciprocal pronouns function exclusively as objects of verbs or prepositions and can never occupy the grammatical subject position.
- Possessive forms of reciprocal pronouns are constructed by attaching an apostrophe and s to the end of the phrase as each other’s and one another’s.
Reciprocal Pronouns-களின் உடமை வடிவங்கள் (Possessive Forms), அந்த சொற்றொடரின் முடிவில் அப்போஸ்ட்ரபி மற்றும் s சேர்த்து each other’s மற்றும் one another’s என உருவாக்கப்படுகின்றன. Reciprocal pronouns के possessive forms वाक्यांश के अंत में apostrophe और s जोड़कर each other’s और one another’s के रूप में बनाए जाते हैं। - In compound subjects joined by and, reflexive pronouns agree with the highest person present, requiring ourselves when first person is included and yourselves when second person is combined with third person.
and மூலம் இணைக்கப்பட்ட கூட்டு எழுவாய்களில் (Compound Subjects), Reflexive Pronouns அங்குள்ள மிக உயர்ந்த இடத்துடன் (Person) உடன்படுகின்றன; தன்மை இடம் உள்ளபோது ourselves என்றும், முன்னிலை மற்றும் படர்க்கை இணையும்போது yourselves என்றும் அமைகின்றன. and से जुड़े compound subjects में, reflexive pronouns उपस्थित सर्वोच्च person के अनुसार होते हैं; जब first person शामिल हो तो ourselves और जब second person के साथ third person जुड़ा हो तो yourselves की आवश्यकता होती है। - When subjects are accompanied by prepositional phrases like along with or as well as, the reflexive pronoun agrees strictly with the first primary subject.
Subject-களுடன் along with அல்லது as well as போன்ற முன்னிடைச்சொல் தொடர்கள் வரும்போது, Reflexive Pronoun கண்டிப்பாக முதல் முதன்மை எழுவாயுடன் (First Primary Subject) மட்டுமே உடன்படும். जब subjects के साथ along with या as well as जैसे prepositional phrases जुड़े होते हैं, तो reflexive pronoun पूरी तरह से पहले मुख्य subject के अनुसार होता है। - The generic indefinite pronoun one requires the reflexive pronoun oneself to maintain syntactical consistency throughout the sentence.
பொதுவான Indefinite Pronoun ஆன one என்பது வாக்கியம் முழுவதும் இலக்கண நிலைத்தன்மையைப் பேண oneself என்ற Reflexive Pronoun-ஐக் கோருகிறது. सामान्य indefinite pronoun one को पूरे वाक्य में संरचनात्मक निरंतरता बनाए रखने के लिए reflexive pronoun oneself की आवश्यकता होती है।
In the next lesson, we will explore the syntactical rules governing the subjective case following the dummy subject It, analyzing why constructions like It is I remain grammatically mandatory over informal alternatives.
