Nouns Expressing Mass, Measure, and Multiplicity
Master the grammatical rules governing nouns of measure, weight, and multiplicity, fractional unit expressions, and noun selection after partitive structures.
The Mathematics of Everyday Nouns
When you visit a local market to buy bananas, you ask for a dozen. When a shopkeeper tallies traditional accounts or wholesale goods, items are counted in pairs, scores, or grosses. In our everyday speech, we constantly use specialized counting words to measure mass, weight, quantity, and value.
These words occupy a distinct position in English grammar. Unlike regular common nouns that simply add an “-s” to indicate more than one item, nouns denoting fixed measures and quantities follow precise numerical constraints. A single misplaced plural ending or an incorrectly framed fraction alters the grammatical rhythm of the entire sentence.
In the previous lesson, we examined how numerical modifiers combine with nouns to act as compound descriptive units. In this lesson, we shift our focus to the nouns themselves: words that measure mass, value, length, and multiplicity, how fractions interact with physical units, and how group-selection phrases dictate the form of the noun that follows.
Nouns of Fixed Measure and Multiplicity
When we count individual objects, we usually increase the number and add “-s” to the noun, such as one apple turning into five apples. However, when counting groups or measuring quantities, English uses specific nouns that already represent a fixed number or standard amount.
These specialized units are known as nouns of measure or nouns of multiplicity. The most common include:
-
Pair: A group or set of two matching items (shoes, gloves, bullocks).
Pair: இரண்டு பொருந்தும் பொருட்களின் தொகுப்பு அல்லது ஜோடி (காலணிகள், கையுறைகள், எருதுகள்). Pair (जोड़ा): दो मेल खाने वाली वस्तुओं का एक समूह या सेट (जैसे जूते, दस्ताने, बैल)। -
Dozen: A group of twelve individual units.
Dozen: பன்னிரண்டு தனிப்பட்ட அலகுகளின் தொகுப்பு. Dozen (दर्जन): बारह अलग-अलग इकाइयों का एक समूह। -
Score: An older unit of measure representing twenty items or twenty years.
Score: இருபது பொருட்கள் அல்லது இருபது ஆண்டுகளைக் குறிக்கும் ஒரு பழைய அளவீட்டு அலகு. Score (बीस / कौड़ी): माप की एक प्राचीन इकाई जो बीस वस्तुओं या बीस वर्षों का प्रतिनिधित्व करती है। -
Gross: A wholesale counting unit representing twelve dozen, or exactly 144 items.
Gross: பன்னிரண்டு டஜன்களை, அதாவது சரியாக 144 பொருட்களைக் குறிக்கும் ஒரு மொத்த விற்பனை எண்ணும் அலகு. Gross (ग्रॉस): थोक व्यापार में गणना की एक इकाई जो बारह दर्जन यानी ठीक 144 वस्तुओं का प्रतिनिधित्व करती है। -
Head: A specialized collective counting unit used exclusively for livestock such as cattle, buffaloes, or sheep.
Head: கால்நடைகள், எருமைகள் அல்லது ஆடுகள் போன்ற வளர்ப்பு விலங்குகளுக்கு மட்டுமே பிரத்யேகமாகப் பயன்படுத்தப்படும் ஒரு கூட்டு எண்ணும் அலகு. Head: मवेशियों (livestock) जैसे गाय-बैल, भैंस या भेड़ों के लिए विशेष रूप से प्रयुक्त होने वाली एक सामूहिक गणना इकाई। -
Stone: A traditional British unit of weight equal to 14 pounds (approximately 6.35 kilograms).
Stone: 14 பவுண்டுகளுக்கு (தோராயமாக 6.35 கிலோகிராம்) சமமான ஒரு பாரம்பரிய பிரிட்டிஷ் எடை அலகு. Stone: वजन की एक पारंपरिक ब्रिटिश इकाई जो 14 पाउंड (लगभग 6.35 किलोग्राम) के बराबर होती है। -
Fathom: A traditional nautical unit of length equal to six feet (approximately 1.83 meters), used to measure water depth.
Fathom: நீரின் ஆழத்தை அளவிடப் பயன்படும், ஆறு அடிகளுக்குச் (தோராயமாக 1.83 மீட்டர்) சமமான ஒரு பாரம்பரிய கடல்சார் நீள அலகு. Fathom: पानी की गहराई मापने के लिए उपयोग की जाने वाली लंबाई की एक पारंपरिक समुद्री (nautical) इकाई, जो छह फीट (लगभग 1.83 मीटर) के बराबर होती है।
The Definite Numeral Rule
When a specific, exact number precedes one of these nouns of measure, the unit noun must remain in its singular base form. Adding an “-s” to the unit noun in this construction is grammatically incorrect.
-
Correct: She purchased three dozen notebooks for the school.
சரி: பள்ளிக்கு அவள் three dozen நோட்டுப் புத்தகங்களை வாங்கினாள். सही: उसने स्कूल के लिए three dozen कॉपियाँ खरीदीं। -
Incorrect: She purchased three dozens notebooks for the school.
தவறு: பள்ளிக்கு அவள் three dozens நோட்டுப் புத்தகங்களை வாங்கினாள். गलत: She purchased three dozens notebooks for the school. -
Correct: The village elder lived to be four score and ten years of age.
சரி: கிராமத்துப் பெரியவர் four score மற்றும் பத்து ஆண்டுகள் (அதாவது 90 வயது வரை) வாழ்ந்தார். सही: गाँव के बुजुर्ग चार score और दस (यानी नब्बे) वर्ष की आयु तक जीवित रहे। -
Incorrect: The village elder lived to be four scores and ten years of age.
தவறு: கிராமத்துப் பெரியவர் four scores மற்றும் பத்து ஆண்டுகள் வாழ்ந்தார். गलत: The village elder lived to be four scores and ten years of age. -
Correct: The merchant ordered five gross of wooden pencils.
சரி: வியாபாரி மரத்தாலான பென்சில்களில் five gross ஆர்டர் செய்தார். सही: व्यापारी ने लकड़ी की पेंसिलों के पाँच gross का ऑर्डर दिया। -
Incorrect: The merchant ordered five grosses of wooden pencils.
தவறு: வியாபாரி மரத்தாலான பென்சில்களில் five grosses ஆர்டர் செய்தார். गलत: The merchant ordered five grosses of wooden pencils. -
Correct: The dairy cooperative manages two hundred head of cattle.
சரி: பால் கூட்டுறவு சங்கம் two hundred head கால்நடைகளைப் பராமரிக்கிறது. सही: डेयरी सहकारी समिति दो सौ head मवेशियों का प्रबंधन करती है। -
Incorrect: The dairy cooperative manages two hundred heads of cattle.
தவறு: பால் கூட்டுறவு சங்கம் two hundred heads கால்நடைகளைப் பராமரிக்கிறது. गलत: The dairy cooperative manages two hundred heads of cattle.
This rule holds because the numeral and the unit noun combine into a single compound quantifying element directly modifying the following noun.
In Tamil and Hindi, your mother tongue follows this exact same pattern. In Tamil, you say இரண்டு டஜன் (two dozen), not இரண்டு டஜன்கள் (two dozens). In Hindi, you say दो दर्जन (two dozen), never दो दर्जनों (two dozens). The counting unit stays in its singular form in your mother tongue when an exact number comes before it, and English preserves this identical rule.
The Indefinite Plural Construction
When these same words do not follow an exact number and instead indicate a large, unspecified quantity, they undergo two structural changes:
-
They take the regular plural suffix -s (or -es).
அவை வழக்கமான பன்மை விகுதியான -s (அல்லது -es) ஐ ஏற்கின்றன. वे सामान्य बहुवचन प्रत्यय (suffix) -s (या -es) ग्रहण करते हैं। -
They must be followed by the preposition of before the noun being counted.
எண்ணப்படும் Noun-க்கு முன்னால் of என்ற முன்னிடைச்சொல் (Preposition) கண்டிப்பாக அவற்றைத் தொடர்ந்து வர வேண்டும். गिनी जाने वाली Noun से पहले उनके बाद संबंधसूचक अव्यय (Preposition) of का प्रयोग अवश्य होना चाहिए।
-
Correct: Dozens of passengers waited at the railway platform.
சரி: இரயில் நடைமேடையில் Dozens of பயணிகள் காத்திருந்தனர். सही: रेलवे प्लेटफॉर्म पर Dozens of (दर्जनों) यात्री प्रतीक्षा कर रहे थे। -
Incorrect: Dozens passengers waited at the railway platform.
தவறு: இரயில் நடைமேடையில் Dozens passengers காத்திருந்தனர். गलत: Dozens passengers waited at the railway platform. -
Correct: Scores of farmers gathered at the agricultural mandi.
சரி: வேளாண்மை மண்டியில் Scores of விவசாயிகள் கூடினர். सही: कृषि मंडी में Scores of (सैकड़ों / बीसियों) किसान एकत्र हुए। -
Incorrect: Score of farmers gathered at the agricultural mandi.
தவறு: வேளாண்மை மண்டியில் Score of farmers கூடினர். गलत: Score of farmers gathered at the agricultural mandi. -
Correct: The stationery distributor supplied grosses of paper packets.
சரி: எழுதுபொருள் விநியோகஸ்தர் grosses of காகித பாக்கெட்டுகளை விநியோகித்தார். सही: स्टेशनरी वितरक ने कागज़ के पैकेटों के grosses of की आपूर्ति की। -
Incorrect: Gross of paper packets arrived yesterday.
தவறு: நேற்று Gross of paper packets வந்து சேர்ந்தன. गलत: Gross of paper packets arrived yesterday.
Notice the stark contrast between these two patterns:
| Construction Type | Exact Number Present? | Unit Noun Form | Preposition Required? | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Definite Quantity | Yes (e.g., two, five) | Singular (no -s) | No | two dozen eggs |
| Indefinite Quantity | No | Plural (-s) | Yes (of) | dozens of eggs |
The Special Case of “Pair” and “Head"
The word head, when used to count animals, never takes a plural form under any circumstance in standard measure usage. We say fifty head of cattle, never fifty heads of cattle, because heads would refer to actual severed physical heads rather than living individual animals.
The word pair offers a slight variation in modern usage. When preceded by a numeral, both three pair of trousers and three pairs of trousers occur in English history, but standard contemporary English strongly prefers the regular plural pairs when preceded by a number greater than one:
-
Preferred in standard formal writing: He bought two pairs of shoes.
முறையான தரநிலை எழுத்தில் விரும்பப்படுவது: He bought two pairs of shoes. मानक औपचारिक लेखन में वरीय: उसने two pairs of (दो जोड़ी) जूते खरीदे। -
Acceptable in traditional trade contexts: He bought two pair of shoes.
பாரம்பரிய வணிகச் சூழல்களில் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளப்படுவது: He bought two pair of shoes. पारंपरिक व्यापारिक संदर्भों में स्वीकार्य: He bought two pair of shoes.
When no number precedes it, the plural form with of is mandatory: Pairs of birds nested along the canal.
Fractional Unit Expressions and Noun Numbers
In daily conversation and formal transactions, we frequently express quantities that lie between whole integers: one and a half hours, two and a half rupees, or half a kilogram. In English syntax, fractions follow strict architectural arrangements depending on where the fraction is positioned relative to the noun.
Understanding whether the accompanying noun must be singular or plural depends entirely on which word directly governs it.
The Contrast: “An Hour and a Half” versus “One and a Half Hours”
There are two primary ways to express the quantity of 1.5 units in English. Both are grammatically valid, but they govern noun numbers in completely different ways:
-
The Post-Fraction Pattern:
A/An + Singular Noun + and a halfபின்னத்திற்குப் பிந்தைய அமைப்பு (The Post-Fraction Pattern): A/An + Singular Noun + and a halfभिन्न-पश्चात पैटर्न (Post-Fraction Pattern): A/An + Singular Noun + and a half -
The Pre-Fraction Pattern:
One and a half + Plural Nounபின்னத்திற்கு முந்தைய அமைப்பு (The Pre-Fraction Pattern): One and a half + Plural Nounभिन्न-पूर्व पैटर्न (Pre-Fraction Pattern): One and a half + Plural Noun
Pattern 1: The Post-Fraction Pattern
When the expression begins with the indefinite article a or an, the noun that immediately follows is grammatically tied to that article. Because the article a or an strictly signifies a single item, the noun must remain in its singular form. The phrase and a half attaches afterward as a modifier.
-
Correct: The train was delayed by an hour and a half.
சரி: இரயில் an hour and a half தாமதமானது. सही: ट्रेन an hour and a half (डेढ़ घंटा) लेट थी। -
Incorrect: The train was delayed by an hours and a half.
தவறு: இரயில் an hours and a half தாமதமானது. गलत: The train was delayed by an hours and a half. -
Correct: The post office is located a kilometer and a half from our school.
சரி: தபால் அலுவலகம் எங்கள் பள்ளியிலிருந்து a kilometer and a half தொலைவில் அமைந்துள்ளது. सही: डाकघर हमारे स्कूल से a kilometer and a half (डेढ़ किलोमीटर) की दूरी पर स्थित है। -
Incorrect: The post office is located a kilometers and a half from our school.
தவறு: தபால் அலுவலகம் எங்கள் பள்ளியிலிருந்து a kilometers and a half தொலைவில் அமைந்துள்ளது. गलत: The post office is located a kilometers and a half from our school. -
Correct: We lived in Nagpur for a year and a half.
சரி: நாங்கள் நாக்பூரில் a year and a half வாழ்ந்தோம். सही: हम नागपुर में a year and a half (डेढ़ साल) रहे। -
Incorrect: We lived in Nagpur for a years and a half.
தவறு: நாங்கள் நாக்பூரில் a years and a half வாழ்ந்தோம். गलत: We lived in Nagpur for a years and a half.
Pattern 2: The Pre-Fraction Pattern
When the phrase begins with one and a half, the entire numeric compound acts as a single quantifier modifying the noun that comes after it. In English mathematical logic, any quantity strictly greater than one (such as 1.5) belongs to the plural domain. Consequently, the noun following one and a half must always be plural.
-
Correct: The train was delayed by one and a half hours.
சரி: இரயில் one and a half hours தாமதமானது. सही: ट्रेन one and a half hours (डेढ़ घंटे) लेट थी। -
Incorrect: The train was delayed by one and a half hour.
தவறு: இரயில் one and a half hour தாமதமானது. गलत: The train was delayed by one and a half hour. -
Correct: The post office is located one and a half kilometers from our school.
சரி: தபால் அலுவலகம் எங்கள் பள்ளியிலிருந்து one and a half kilometers தொலைவில் அமைந்துள்ளது. सही: डाकघर हमारे स्कूल से one and a half kilometers (डेढ़ किलोमीटर) दूर स्थित है। -
Incorrect: The post office is located one and a half kilometer from our school.
தவறு: தபால் அலுவலகம் எங்கள் பள்ளியிலிருந்து one and a half kilometer தொலைவில் அமைந்துள்ளது. गलत: The post office is located one and a half kilometer from our school. -
Correct: We lived in Nagpur for one and a half years.
சரி: நாங்கள் நாக்பூரில் one and a half years வாழ்ந்தோம். सही: हम नागपुर में one and a half years (डेढ़ साल) रहे। -
Incorrect: We lived in Nagpur for one and a half year.
தவறு: நாங்கள் நாக்பூரில் one and a half year வாழ்ந்தோம். गलत: We lived in Nagpur for one and a half year.
Analogy · The Traditional Balance Scale Expand analogy
Think of a traditional balance scale (tarazu) in an Indian grocery store. If you place exactly a single one-kilogram weight on one pan, it represents the pure singular unit. The moment you place even a small fraction beside it, the weight exceeds unity and tilts into the multiple zone. In English, the singular noun form belongs strictly to an exact quantity of one; the moment a quantity exceeds one, the noun must take its plural form.
Fractional Expressions with Integers Greater Than One
When the whole number is two or more (such as 2.5, 3.5, or 4.5), both grammatical configurations require the noun to be in its plural form. This occurs because the base integer itself is already more than one.
Consider the following two structural models:
-
Numeral + and a half + Plural Noun: This is the standard, modern phrasing.Numeral + and a half + Plural Noun: இது வழக்கமான, நவீன சொற்றொடர் அமைப்பு.संख्या (Numeral) + and a half + Plural Noun: यह मानक, आधुनिक अभिव्यक्ति है।- Correct: The vendor charged two and a half rupees for the postcard.
சரி: தபால் அட்டைக்கு வியாபாரி two and a half rupees வசூலித்தார். सही: विक्रेता ने पोस्टकार्ड के लिए two and a half rupees (ढाई रुपये) लिए। - Correct: The journey took three and a half days.
சரி: பயணம் three and a half days ஆனது. सही: यात्रा में three and a half days (साढ़े तीन दिन) लगे।
- Correct: The vendor charged two and a half rupees for the postcard.
-
Numeral + Plural Noun + and a half: This is an older, formal construction frequently seen in classic literature and formal records.Numeral + Plural Noun + and a half: இது உன்னத இலக்கியங்களிலும் முறையான பதிவுகளிலும் அடிக்கடி காணப்படும் ஒரு பழைய, முறையான கட்டமைப்பு.संख्या (Numeral) + Plural Noun + and a half: यह एक पुरानी, औपचारिक संरचना है जो अक्सर क्लासिक साहित्य और आधिकारिक अभिलेखों में देखी जाती है।- Correct: The vendor charged two rupees and a half for the postcard.
சரி: தபால் அட்டைக்கு வியாபாரி two rupees and a half வசூலித்தார். सही: विक्रेता ने पोस्टकार्ड के लिए two rupees and a half (ढाई रुपये) लिए। - Correct: The journey took three days and a half.
சரி: பயணம் three days and a half ஆனது. सही: यात्रा में three days and a half (साढ़े तीन दिन) लगे।
- Correct: The vendor charged two rupees and a half for the postcard.
Under no circumstance can the noun appear in its singular form in either of these constructions:
-
Incorrect: The vendor charged two rupee and a half.
தவறு: தபால் அட்டைக்கு வியாபாரி two rupee and a half வசூலித்தார். गलत: The vendor charged two rupee and a half. -
Incorrect: The vendor charged two and a half rupee.
தவறு: தபால் அட்டைக்கு வியாபாரி two and a half rupee வசூலித்தார். गलत: The vendor charged two and a half rupee.
Summary of Fractional Unit Patterns
The table below summarizes the exact noun forms required across each fractional construction:
| Construction Structure | Numeric Value | Noun Form | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
A/An + Noun + and a half | 1.5 | Singular | an hour and a half |
One and a half + Noun | 1.5 | Plural | one and a half hours |
Numeral (more than 1) + and a half + Noun | more than 1.5 | Plural | two and a half rupees |
Numeral (more than 1) + Noun + and a half | more than 1.5 | Plural | two rupees and a half |
Group Selection and Noun Form
In English, we regularly pick an individual item, person, or option out of a larger collection. We do this using selection phrases such as one of, each of, either of, and neither of.
These expressions follow a fundamental law of selection logic: you cannot choose a single item from a group unless that group consists of multiple members. If you hold only a single pencil in your hand, you cannot pick “one out of the pencil.” You must have a collection of pencils to select one.
Because the noun following the preposition of names the pool or collection from which the selection is made, that noun must always appear in its plural form.
Cross-Linguistic Scaffolding: Selection in Indian Languages
This selection principle is completely natural in your mother tongue:
-
In Tamil: மாணவர்களில் ஒருவர் (One of the students). The word மாணவர்களில் is plural, referring to the entire group of students.
தமிழில்: மாணவர்களில் ஒருவர் (One of the students). இதில் மாணவர்களில் என்ற சொல் மாணவர்களின் மொத்தக் குழுவையும் குறிக்கும் பன்மைச் சொல்லாகும். तमिल में: மாணவர்களில் ஒருவர் (One of the students)। यहाँ மாணவர்களில் शब्द बहुवचन है, जो छात्रों के पूरे समूह को संदर्भित करता है। -
In Hindi: छात्रों में से एक (One of the students). The word छात्रों is plural, designating the collection from which one is chosen.
இந்தியிலும்: छात्रों में से एक (One of the students). இதில் छात्रों என்ற சொல் ஒருவர் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்படும் தொகுப்பைக் குறிக்கும் பன்மைச் சொல்லாகும். हिंदी में: छात्रों में से एक (One of the students)। यहाँ छात्रों शब्द बहुवचन है, जो उस समूह को दर्शाता है जिसमें से एक को चुना गया है।
In both languages, you naturally place the group in the plural before selecting one individual. A frequent trap in English occurs when speakers unintentionally drop the plural suffix from the noun, saying one of my friend instead of one of my friends. Recognizing that English shares the exact same logic with your mother tongue eliminates this error immediately.
The Four Core Selection Frames
Let us deconstruct each of the four main selection structures and inspect how they govern noun forms.
1. “One of” + Determiner + Plural Noun
The phrase one of isolates a single member from a broader collection. The noun following the determiner (such as the, my, these, or those) must always be plural.
-
Correct: She is one of the finest doctors in the district hospital.
சரி: அவள் மாவட்ட மருத்துவமனையின் one of the finest doctors (சிறந்த மருத்துவர்களில் ஒருவர்) ஆவாள். सही: वह जिला अस्पताल के one of the finest doctors (सबसे बेहतरीन डॉक्टरों में से एक) हैं। -
Incorrect: She is one of the finest doctor in the district hospital.
தவறு: அவள் மாவட்ட மருத்துவமனையின் one of the finest doctor ஆவாள். गलत: She is one of the finest doctor in the district hospital. -
Correct: One of my brothers lives in Bengaluru.
சரி: One of my brothers (என் சகோதரர்களில் ஒருவர்) பெங்களூருவில் வசிக்கிறார். सही: One of my brothers (मेरे भाइयों में से एक) बेंगलुरु में रहता है। -
Incorrect: One of my brother lives in Bengaluru.
தவறு: One of my brother பெங்களூருவில் வசிக்கிறார். गलत: One of my brother lives in Bengaluru. -
Correct: One of these options must be selected before submission.
சரி: சமர்ப்பிக்கும் முன் One of these options (இந்த விருப்பங்களில் ஒன்று) தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட வேண்டும். सही: सबमिट करने से पहले One of these options (इन विकल्पों में से एक) का चयन किया जाना चाहिए। -
Incorrect: One of this option must be selected before submission.
தவறு: சமர்ப்பிக்கும் முன் One of this option தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட வேண்டும். गलत: One of this option must be selected before submission.
2. “Each of” + Determiner + Plural Noun
The distributive word each of considers members of a group individually, one by one. Because it distributes over a group, the group noun itself must be plural.
-
Correct: Each of the participants received a certificate of merit.
சரி: பங்கேற்பாளர்கள் ஒவ்வொருவரும் (Each of the participants) பாராட்டுச் சான்றிதழைப் பெற்றனர். सही: Each of the participants (प्रतिभागियों में से प्रत्येक) को योग्यता प्रमाण पत्र प्राप्त हुआ। -
Incorrect: Each of the participant received a certificate of merit.
தவறு: Each of the participant பாராட்டுச் சான்றிதழைப் பெற்றனர். गलत: Each of the participant received a certificate of merit. -
Correct: The supervisor examined each of the machines carefully.
சரி: மேற்பார்வையாளர் இயந்திரங்கள் ஒவ்வொன்றையும் (each of the machines) கவனமாக ஆய்வு செய்தார். सही: सुपरवाइजर ने each of the machines (मशीनों में से प्रत्येक) की सावधानीपूर्वक जांच की। -
Incorrect: The supervisor examined each of the machine carefully.
தவறு: மேற்பார்வையாளர் each of the machine கவனமாக ஆய்வு செய்தார். गलत: The supervisor examined each of the machine carefully.
3. “Either of” + Determiner + Plural Noun
The word either refers to one or the other of strictly two persons or things. Because it requires a choice between two entities, the noun representing those two entities must be plural.
-
Correct: You may take either of the two roads to reach the highway.
சரி: நெடுஞ்சாலையை அடைய நீங்கள் இரண்டு சாலைகளில் ஏதேனும் ஒன்றை (either of the two roads) தேர்வு செய்யலாம். सही: हाईवे तक पहुँचने के लिए आप either of the two roads (दोनों सड़कों में से कोई भी एक) ले सकते हैं। -
Incorrect: You may take either of the two road to reach the highway.
தவறு: நெடுஞ்சாலையை அடைய நீங்கள் either of the two road தேர்வு செய்யலாம். गलत: You may take either of the two road to reach the highway. -
Correct: Either of these shirts will suit the occasion.
சரி: இந்தச் சட்டைகளில் ஏதேனும் ஒன்று (Either of these shirts) இந்த நிகழ்வுக்குப் பொருந்தும். सही: इस अवसर के लिए Either of these shirts (इन दोनों कमीज़ों में से कोई भी एक) उपयुक्त रहेगी। -
Incorrect: Either of this shirt will suit the occasion.
தவறு: Either of this shirt இந்த நிகழ்வுக்குப் பொருந்தும். गलत: Either of this shirt will suit the occasion.
4. “Neither of” + Determiner + Plural Noun
The word neither means not the one nor the other of strictly two persons or things. Just like either, it operates upon a pair of entities, requiring the noun that follows to be plural.
-
Correct: Neither of the accusations was backed by verifiable evidence.
சரி: குற்றச்சாட்டுகள் இரண்டில் எதுவுமே (Neither of the accusations) சரிபார்க்கக்கூடிய ஆதாரங்களால் ஆதரிக்கப்படவில்லை. सही: Neither of the accusations (दोनों आरोपों में से कोई भी) सत्यापन योग्य साक्ष्य द्वारा समर्थित नहीं था। -
Incorrect: Neither of the accusation was backed by verifiable evidence.
தவறு: Neither of the accusation சரிபார்க்கக்கூடிய ஆதாரங்களால் ஆதரிக்கப்படவில்லை. गलत: Neither of the accusation was backed by verifiable evidence. -
Correct: Neither of the candidates met the eligibility criteria.
சரி: வேட்பாளர்கள் இருவரில் எவருமே (Neither of the candidates) தகுதி வரம்புகளைப் பூர்த்தி செய்யவில்லை. सही: Neither of the candidates (दोनों उम्मीदवारों में से कोई भी) पात्रता मानदंडों को पूरा नहीं करता था। -
Incorrect: Neither of the candidate met the eligibility criteria.
தவறு: Neither of the candidate தகுதி வரம்புகளைப் பூர்த்தி செய்யவில்லை. गलत: Neither of the candidate met the eligibility criteria.
Structural Comparison of Selection Expressions
The following table provides a clear overview of how these selection structures operate on following nouns:
| Selection Expression | Entity Count in Group | Required Noun Form | Example Construction |
|---|---|---|---|
One of | Three or more | Plural Noun | one of the candidates |
Each of | Two or more | Plural Noun | each of the employees |
Either of | Strictly two | Plural Noun | either of the answers |
Neither of | Strictly two | Plural Noun | neither of the proposals |
While the noun that follows of must be plural because it represents the group, keep in mind that the selection words themselves (one, each, either, neither) focus on an individual entity. The interaction between these singular selection words and their corresponding verbs will be examined in depth when we reach Subject-Verb Agreement in Chapter 7.
Common Syntactical Pitfalls and Error Patterns
To solidify your mastery of nouns expressing mass, measure, and multiplicity, review these high-frequency structural errors and their corrections:
| Error Pattern | Incorrect Construction | Correct Construction | Syntactical Rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Definite Unit Pluralization | She bought five dozens oranges. | She bought five dozen oranges. | Definite numerals keep nouns of measure in singular form. |
| Indefinite Unit Omission | Score of protesters stood outside. | Scores of protesters stood outside. | Indefinite quantities require plural form and preposition of. |
| Pre-Fraction Unit Error | The training lasted one and a half month. | The training lasted one and a half months. | Quantities exceeding one unit strictly require plural nouns. |
| Post-Fraction Pluralization | We waited a months and a half. | We waited a month and a half. | The article a or an directly governs a singular noun. |
| Group Selection Truncation | He is one of my close friend. | He is one of my close friends. | Selection from a group requires a plural noun pool. |
| Livestock Unit Error | The rancher sold thirty heads of sheep. | The rancher sold thirty head of sheep. | Head remains invariant when functioning as a measure for livestock. |
Key Takeaways
-
Nouns of measure (dozen, score, gross, head) remain in their singular base form when preceded by an exact numeral (three dozen pencils).
When expressing an indefinite large quantity, nouns of measure take the plural suffix -s and require the preposition of (dozens of pencils).
The noun head, when used as a unit of measure for cattle and livestock, never takes a plural form (fifty head of cattle).
கால்நடைகளுக்கான அளவீட்டு அலகாகப் பயன்படும் போது, head என்ற Noun ஒருபோதும் பன்மை வடிவத்தை ஏற்பதில்லை (fifty head of cattle). मवेशियों और पशुधन के लिए माप की इकाई के रूप में उपयोग किए जाने पर Noun head कभी भी बहुवचन रूप नहीं लेता है (fifty head of cattle)। -
In fractional expressions starting with a or an, the immediately following noun remains singular (an hour and a half).
a அல்லது an உடன் தொடங்கும் பின்ன வெளிப்பாடுகளில், உடனடியாக அடுத்து வரும் Noun ஒருமையாகவே நீடிக்கிறது (an hour and a half). a या an से शुरू होने वाले भिन्न अभिव्यक्तियों में, तुरंत बाद आने वाला Noun एकवचन रहता है (an hour and a half)। -
In fractional expressions starting with one and a half, the following noun must be plural (one and a half hours).
