Noun Case and Possession Rules
Master English noun cases including nominative, objective, dative, and possessive structures. Learn apostrophe usage, joint possession, and gerund rules.
Understanding Grammatical Case
In previous lessons, we examined what nouns are and how their singular and plural forms behave. However, a noun does not exist in isolation. When placed inside a sentence, every noun performs a distinct job in relation to the verbs and other words around it.
A noun might perform an action, receive an action, benefit from an action, or indicate ownership over another item. The grammatical form or position that reflects this specific relationship is called Case.
Case acts like an identity card for a noun within a sentence. Even though modern English nouns change their physical spelling only when showing ownership, understanding the functional roles of case is essential for constructing clear, structurally sound sentences.
The Core Functional Cases
English recognizes several grammatical cases based on how a noun behaves within a clause. These functional roles determine how sentences communicate who did what, to whom, and for whose benefit.
1. The Nominative Case (The Doer of the Action)
When you look at a sentence, there is usually someone or something carrying out an action or existing in a specific state. Think of the person who hits the ball, writes a letter, or stands in a room.
When a noun functions as the Subject of a finite verb, it is in the Nominative Case (also known as the Subjective Case). To find the noun in the nominative case, locate the verb and ask “Who?” or “What?” before it.
-
Kavita prepared dinner for the family. (Who prepared dinner? The noun Kavita is the subject.)
Kavita குடும்பத்திற்கு இரவு உணவு சமைத்தாள். (யார் இரவு உணவு சமைத்தது? Kavita என்ற Noun எழுவாயாக உள்ளது.) कविता ने परिवार के लिए रात का खाना तैयार किया। (किसने खाना तैयार किया? Noun Kavita Subject है।) -
The train arrived on platform four. (What arrived? The noun train is the subject.)
நான்காவது நடைமேடைக்கு ரயில் வந்து சேர்ந்தது. (எது வந்து சேர்ந்தது? train என்ற Noun எழுவாயாக உள்ளது.) ट्रेन प्लेटफॉर्म चार पर पहुंची। (क्या पहुंची? Noun train Subject है।)
In Tamil and Hindi, the doer is naturally identified through grammatical markers or word order:
- Tamil: கவிதா உணவு சமைத்தாள். (Kavita is the doer / எழுவாய்.)
- Hindi: कविता ने खाना बनाया। (Kavita is the doer / कर्ता कारक.)
In English, singular and plural nouns do not change their spelling when used as a subject. Their position before the main verb marks their nominative status.
2. The Objective Case (The Receiver of the Action)
An action initiated by a doer often impacts someone or something else. If you throw a ball, the ball receives the throwing action. If you read a book, the book receives the reading action.
When a noun functions as the Direct Object of a transitive verb, it is in the Objective Case (also called the Accusative Case). You can easily identify this noun by finding the verb and asking “Whom?” or “What?” after it.
-
Rohan kicked the football. (Rohan kicked what? The noun football is the direct object.)
Rohan கால்பந்தை (football) உதைத்தான். (Rohan எதை உதைத்தான்? football என்ற Noun நேரடி செயப்படுபொருளாகும்.) रोहन ने फुटबॉल को किक मारी। (रोहन ने किसे किक मारी? Noun football Direct Object है।) -
The teacher praised Ananya. (The teacher praised whom? The noun Ananya is the direct object.)
ஆசிரியர் அனன்யாவைப் (Ananya) பாராட்டினார். (ஆசிரியர் யாரைப் பாராட்டினார்? Ananya என்ற Noun நேரடி செயப்படுபொருளாகும்.) शिक्षिका ने अनन्या की प्रशंसा की। (शिक्षिका ने किसकी प्रशंसा की? Noun Ananya Direct Object है।)
A noun also enters the objective case when it follows a preposition. In this position, the noun functions as the Object of a Preposition:
-
The children played in the garden. (The noun garden is governed by the preposition in.)
குழந்தைகள் தோட்டத்தில் (garden) விளையாடினார்கள். (garden என்ற Noun in என்ற Preposition-ஆல் ஆளப்படுகிறது.) बच्चे बगीचे में खेले। (Noun garden Preposition in द्वारा शासित है।) -
Meera sat beside her mother. (The noun mother is governed by the preposition beside.)
மீரா தன் தாயின் (mother) அருகில் அமர்ந்தாள். (mother என்ற Noun beside என்ற Preposition-ஆல் ஆளப்படுகிறது.) मीरा अपनी माँ के पास बैठी। (Noun mother Preposition beside द्वारा शासित है।)
Just like in the nominative case, English nouns keep the exact same physical spelling in the objective case. The noun Ananya looks identical whether she is praising someone or being praised.
3. The Dative Case (The Indirect Receiver or Beneficiary)
Sometimes an action involves two different recipients. One entity receives the direct impact, while another entity receives or benefits from the overall transaction.
Consider this sentence: The manager gave Suresh a promotion. Here, promotion is what was directly given (the direct object). But who received it? Suresh received it.
When a noun functions as the Indirect Object of a verb, answering the question “To whom?” or “For whom?” the action is performed, it is in the Dative Case:
-
Priya baked her brother a cake. (For whom was the cake baked? Brother is the indirect object in the dative case.)
பிரியா தன் சகோதரனுக்கு (brother) கேக் சுட்டுத் தந்தாள். (யாருக்காக கேக் செய்யப்பட்டது? Brother என்பது Dative Case-ல் உள்ள மறைமுகச் செயப்படுபொருளாகும்.) प्रिया ने अपने भाई के लिए केक बनाया। (केक किसके लिए बनाया गया था? Brother Dative Case में Indirect Object है।) -
The teacher handed the monitor the attendance register. (To whom was the register handed? Monitor is the indirect object in the dative case.)
Notice that an indirect object can also be expressed using a prepositional phrase placed after the direct object:
-
Priya baked a cake for her brother.
பிரியா தன் சகோதரனுக்காக (brother) ஒரு கேக் சுட்டாள். प्रिया ने अपने भाई के लिए एक केक बनाया। -
The teacher handed the attendance register to the monitor.
ஆசிரியர் வருகைப் பதிவேட்டை வகுப்புத் தலைவரிடம் (monitor) ஒப்படைத்தார். शिक्षिका ने मॉनिटर को उपस्थिति रजिस्टर सौंपा।
In both structures, the noun brother or monitor represents the intended recipient or beneficiary of the action.
4. The Vocative Case (Direct Address)
When you call someone by name to catch their attention, you are using the noun in a distinct communicative function. The noun is neither performing an action as a subject nor receiving one as an object.
When a noun is used to speak to or address a person directly, it is in the Vocative Case (often called the Nominative of Address):
-
Rahul, please listen carefully.
ராகுல், தயவுசெய்து கவனமாகக் கேள். राहुल, कृपया ध्यान से सुनो। -
Come inside, children, before it starts raining.
மழை தொடங்குவதற்கு முன் உள்ளே வாருங்கள், குழந்தைகளே. बारिश शुरू होने से पहले अंदर आ जाओ, बच्चों।
Notice that a noun in the vocative case is always separated from the rest of the sentence by a comma. It stands outside the core subject-verb-object structure of the clause.
Summary of Core Functional Cases
The following table summarizes how each functional case operates in everyday English:
| Case Name | Primary Role in Sentence | Diagnostic Question | Example Sentence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nominative | Subject of a finite verb | Who? / What? (before verb) | Sunita wrote an article. |
| Objective (Accusative) | Direct object or object of preposition | Whom? / What? (after verb/preposition) | Sunita wrote an article. |
| Dative | Indirect object (recipient / beneficiary) | To whom? / For whom? | Sunita wrote her mother a letter. |
| Vocative | Calling or addressing someone directly | Addressing someone directly | Sunita, please write the letter. |
The Possessive Case and Apostrophe Mechanics
While nouns in the nominative and objective cases keep their base form, English changes the physical appearance of a noun when expressing ownership, origin, or a close relationship.
When you say the pen belongs to Amit, you can express that exact relationship in fewer words by saying Amit’s pen. This modified form of the noun is called the Possessive Case (or the Genitive Case).
The small punctuation mark used above the line is the Apostrophe ('). Combined with the letter s, it marks who owns or produces something.
') ஆகும். இது s என்ற எழுத்துடன் இணைந்து, ஒரு பொருள் யாருக்குச் சொந்தமானது அல்லது யாரால் உருவாக்கப்பட்டது என்பதைக் குறிக்கிறது. ') कहा जाता है। अक्षर s के साथ मिलकर, यह दर्शाता है कि किसी वस्तु का स्वामी या निर्माता कौन है।
Cross-Linguistic Comparison: Case Markers vs. Apostrophes
In Indian languages, possession is expressed by attaching postpositions or case markers to nouns:
- Hindi: अमित की कलम (Amit ki kalam — using the postposition की)
- Tamil: அமித்தின் பேனா (Amithin pena — using the possessive marker இன் / உடைய)
In English, you have two primary methods to convey this relationship:
-
The Inflected Possessive: Adding an apostrophe-s (
's) directly to the noun (Amit’s pen).The Inflected Possessive: Noun-உடன் நேரடியாக ஓர் apostrophe-s ( 's) சேர்ப்பது (Amit’s pen).Inflected Possessive: Noun के साथ सीधे एपोस्ट्रोफी-s ( 's) जोड़ना (Amit’s pen)। -
The Prepositional Possessive: Using the preposition
of(the pen of Amit).The Prepositional Possessive: ofஎன்ற Preposition-ஐப் பயன்படுத்துவது (the pen of Amit).Prepositional Possessive: Preposition ofका प्रयोग करना (the pen of Amit)।
Choosing between these two methods depends strictly on whether the possessing noun represents a living entity or an inanimate object.
The Core Rule: Living Beings vs. Non-Living Objects
In standard English, the apostrophe-s ('s) is primarily reserved for living beings (humans and animals). Non-living objects do not have personal agency or the capacity to possess property. Therefore, non-living things must express possession using the preposition of:
-
Living Being: The boy’s bicycle (Correct)
உயிருள்ளவை: The boy’s bicycle (சரியானது) सजीव प्राणी: The boy’s bicycle (सही) -
Living Being: The lion’s mane (Correct)
உயிருள்ளவை: The lion’s mane (சரியானது) सजीव प्राणी: The lion’s mane (सही) -
Non-Living Object: The table’s leg (Incorrect)
உயிரற்ற பொருள்: The table’s leg (தவறானது) निर्जीव वस्तु: The table’s leg (गलत) -
Non-Living Object: The leg of the table (Correct)
உயிரற்ற பொருள்: The leg of the table (சரியானது) निर्जीव वस्तु: The leg of the table (सही) -
Non-Living Object: The car’s steering (Incorrect)
உயிரற்ற பொருள்: The car’s steering (தவறானது) निर्जीव वस्तु: The car’s steering (गलत) -
Non-Living Object: The steering of the car (Correct)
உயிரற்ற பொருள்: The steering of the car (சரியானது) निर्जीव वस्तु: The steering of the car (सही)
The Native Language Transfer Trap
This distinction is one of the most common error zones for Indian learners. In Hindi, it is completely natural to say मेज़ का पैर (table’s leg) or किताब का पन्ना (book’s page). Similarly, in Tamil, you say மேஜையின் கால் (table’s leg) using a standard possessive ending.
Because your mother tongue uses the same possessive marker for people and objects alike, you might feel tempted to write the table’s leg or the building’s roof in English. Always pause when describing non-living items: avoid the apostrophe and use the of pattern instead (the roof of the building).
The Five Permitted Exceptions for Non-Living Objects
Standard English permits non-living nouns to take an apostrophe-s ('s) in five strictly defined categories:
's) ஏற்க அனுமதிக்கப்படுகின்றன: 's) लगाने की अनुमति देती है:
1. Nouns Denoting Time
Units of time, calendar markers, and duration frequently take an apostrophe:
-
A day’s leave
ஒரு நாள் விடுப்பு एक दिन की छुट्टी -
A week’s holiday
ஒரு வார விடுமுறை एक सप्ताह की छुट्टी -
Yesterday’s newspaper
நேற்றைய செய்தித்தாள் कल का अखबार -
Three hours’ journey
மூன்று மணி நேரப் பயணம் तीन घंटे की यात्रा -
A month’s salary
ஒரு மாதச் சம்பளம் एक महीने का वेतन
2. Nouns Denoting Distance, Space, and Length
Expressions that measure spatial distance or physical dimensions allow the possessive apostrophe:
-
At a stone’s throw (very close)
கல்லெறியும் தூரத்தில் (மிக அருகில்) At a stone’s throw (बहुत पास या थोड़ी ही दूरी पर) -
A hair’s breadth (a tiny margin)
மயிரிழை இடைவெளியில் (மிகக் குறைந்த அளவு) A hair’s breadth (बाल बराबर अंतर या बहुत मामूली अंतर) -
An arm’s length (a safe distance)
ஒரு கை தூரத்தில் (பாதுகாப்பான தூரம்) An arm’s length (एक हाथ की दूरी या सुरक्षित दूरी) -
A boat’s length
ஒரு படகின் நீளம் A boat’s length (नाव की लंबाई भर दूरी) -
A needle’s point
ஒரு ஊசியின் முனை A needle’s point (सुई की नोक)
3. Nouns Denoting Weight and Measurement
Fixed physical units of weight and capacity can use an apostrophe when followed by their measured value:
-
A pound’s weight
ஒரு பவுண்ட் எடை एक पाउंड का वजन -
A ton’s capacity
ஒரு டன் கொள்ளளவு एक टन की क्षमता -
A kilo’s worth
ஒரு கிலோவின் மதிப்பு एक किलो का मूल्य या मात्रा
4. Personified Objects
When an inanimate object or an abstract concept is spoken of as if it were a living person with thoughts, feelings, or intentional actions, it is granted the possessive apostrophe:
-
Nature’s laws (Nature is imagined as a lawmaker)
இயற்கையின் விதிகள் (Nature’s laws - இயற்கை ஒரு சட்டமியற்றுபவராக உருவகப்படுத்தப்படுகிறது) Nature’s laws (प्रकृति की कल्पना एक कानून निर्माता के रूप में की गई है) -
Fortune’s favourite (Fortune is treated as a person distributing favours)
அதிர்ஷ்டத்தின் செல்லப்பிள்ளை (Fortune’s favourite - அதிர்ஷ்டம் சலுகைகளை வழங்கும் ஒரு நபராகக் கருதப்படுகிறது) Fortune’s favourite (भाग्य को कृपा बांटने वाले व्यक्ति के रूप में माना गया है) -
Duty’s call (Duty is treated as a person summoning you)
கடமையின் அழைப்பு (Duty’s call - கடமை உங்களை அழைக்கும் ஒரு நபராகக் கருதப்படுகிறது) Duty’s call (कर्तव्य को पुकारने वाले व्यक्ति के रूप में माना गया है) -
At death’s door (Death is pictured as a visitor waiting at an entrance)
மரணத்தின் வாசலில் (At death’s door - மரணம் நுழைவாயிலில் காத்திருக்கும் ஒரு பார்வையாளராகச் சித்தரிக்கப்படுகிறது) At death’s door (मृत्यु को द्वार पर प्रतीक्षा कर रहे आगंतुक के रूप में चित्रित किया गया है) -
The sun’s rays, the moon’s glow, the Earth’s atmosphere
சூரியனின் கதிர்கள் (The sun’s rays), நிலவின் ஒளி (the moon’s glow), பூமியின் வளிமண்டலம் (the Earth’s atmosphere) The sun’s rays, the moon’s glow, the Earth’s atmosphere (सूर्य की किरणें, चंद्रमा की चमक, पृथ्वी का वायुमंडल)
5. Dignified and Idiomatic Expressions
Certain established phrases that have entered common English usage preserve the possessive apostrophe for phonetic balance and historical tradition:
-
At one’s wit’s end
என்ன செய்வதென்று தெரியாமல் திகைத்துப் போதல் (At one’s wit’s end) At one’s wit’s end (कुछ समझ न आना या अक्ल चकरा जाना) -
At one’s finger’s ends
விரல் நுனியில் இருத்தல் / அத்துபடியாக இருத்தல் (At one’s finger’s ends) At one’s finger’s ends (पूरी तरह याद होना या उंगलियों पर होना) -
To one’s heart’s content
மனம் நிறையும் வரை / திருப்தியாக (To one’s heart’s content) To one’s heart’s content (जी भरकर या मनचाहे रूप से) -
For mercy’s sake, for heaven’s sake, for goodness’ sake
தயவுசெய்து / கடவுளின் பொருட்டு (For mercy’s sake, for heaven’s sake, for goodness’ sake) For mercy’s sake, for heaven’s sake, for goodness’ sake (भगवान के लिए / दया की खातिर / भलाई की खातिर)
Apostrophe Placement: Singular, Plural, and Hissing Sounds
Placing the apostrophe in the wrong position completely changes the meaning of a sentence or produces an unpronounceable sequence of sounds. Standard English follows clear phonetic and orthographic rules to decide whether to add 's or only an apostrophe (').
's சேர்க்க வேண்டுமா அல்லது வெறும் apostrophe (') மட்டும் சேர்க்க வேண்டுமா என்பதைத் தீர்மானிக்க நிலையான ஆங்கிலம் தெளிவான ஒலிப்பியல் மற்றும் எழுத்து விதிகளையே பின்பற்றுகிறது. 's जोड़ा जाए या केवल एपोस्ट्रोफी (')।
1. Singular Nouns
For most singular nouns, form the possessive by adding an apostrophe followed by s ('s), regardless of whether the noun represents a person, an animal, or a qualifying exception:
s-ஐயும் ('s) சேர்ப்பதன் மூலம் உடைமை வடிவம் உருவாக்கப்படுகிறது: s ('s) जोड़ा जाता है, चाहे वह Noun किसी व्यक्ति, जानवर या किसी योग्य अपवाद का प्रतिनिधित्व करता हो:
-
The student’s notebook (one student owns the notebook)
மாணவனுடைய நோட்டுப் புத்தகம் (The student’s notebook - ஒரு மாணவருக்கு அந்த நோட்டுப் புத்தகம் சொந்தமானது) The student’s notebook (एक छात्र नोटबुक का मालिक है) -
The doctor’s stethoscope (belonging to one doctor)
மருத்துவருடைய ஸ்டெதாஸ்கோப் (The doctor’s stethoscope - ஒரு மருத்துவருக்குச் சொந்தமானது) The doctor’s stethoscope (एक डॉक्टर से संबंधित) -
The lion’s den (the shelter of one lion)
சிங்கத்தின் குகை (The lion’s den - ஒரு சிங்கத்தின் இருப்பிடம்) The lion’s den (एक शेर की मांद या आश्रय)
2. Regular Plural Nouns Ending in ‘S’
When a plural noun already ends in the letter s from normal pluralization, adding another s would create an unnecessary, awkward hissing sound (students’s).
s என்ற எழுத்தில் முடியும் போது, மற்றொரு s-ஐச் சேர்ப்பது தேவையற்ற மற்றும் சங்கடமான சீறும் ஓசையை (students’s) உண்டாக்கும். s अक्षर पर समाप्त होता है, तो दूसरा s जोड़ने से एक अनावश्यक और अजीब फुसफुसाहट (Hissing) वाली ध्वनि (students’s) उत्पन्न होगी।
To keep pronunciation smooth and natural, add only the apostrophe after the final s:
s-க்கு அடுத்ததாக வெறும் apostrophe-ஐ மட்டும் சேர்க்கவும்: s के बाद केवल एपोस्ट्रोफी (') लगाएं:
-
The students’ notebooks (notebooks belonging to multiple students)
மாணவர்களுடைய நோட்டுப் புத்தகங்கள் (The students’ notebooks - பல மாணவர்களுக்குச் சொந்தமான நோட்டுப் புத்தகங்கள்) The students’ notebooks (कई छात्रों की नोटबुक) -
The workers’ union (a union formed by multiple workers)
தொழிலாளர்கள் சங்கம் (The workers’ union - பல தொழிலாளர்களால் அமைக்கப்பட்ட சங்கம்) The workers’ union (कई श्रमिकों द्वारा बनाया गया संघ) -
A girls’ school (an institution established for girls, not one girl)
சிறுமிகள் பள்ளி (A girls’ school - ஒரு சிறுமிக்காக அல்லாமல், பல சிறுமிகளுக்காக நிறுவப்பட்ட கல்வி நிறுவனம்) A girls’ school (लड़कियों के लिए स्थापित संस्थान, किसी एक लड़की के लिए नहीं) -
The officers’ mess (a dining hall for officers)
அதிகாரிகளுக்கான உணவகம் (The officers’ mess - பல அதிகாரிகளுக்கான உணவுக்கூடம்) The officers’ mess (अधिकारियों के लिए भोजन कक्ष)
Notice the vital distinction in meaning:
-
The teacher corrected the student’s paper. (Refers to the paper of one single student.)
The teacher corrected the student’s paper. (இது ஒரே ஒரு மாணவனுடைய விடைத்தாளைக் குறிக்கிறது.) The teacher corrected the student’s paper. (एक ही छात्र के पेपर को संदर्भित करता है।) -
The teacher corrected the students’ papers. (Refers to papers submitted by many students.)
The teacher corrected the students’ papers. (இது பல மாணவர்கள் சமர்ப்பித்த விடைத்தாள்களைக் குறிக்கிறது.) The teacher corrected the students’ papers. (कई छात्रों द्वारा जमा किए गए पेपर्स को संदर्भित करता है।)
3. Irregular Plural Nouns Not Ending in ‘S’
Some nouns form their plurals through internal vowel changes rather than adding an -s ending (such as men, women, children, people).
-s விகுதியைச் சேர்ப்பதற்குப் பதிலாக, உள் உயிர் எழுத்து மாற்றங்கள் (Internal vowel changes) மூலம் தங்களின் பன்மை வடிவங்களைப் பெறுகின்றன (men, women, children, people போன்றவை). -s जोड़ने के बजाय आंतरिक स्वर (Vowel) में बदलाव करके अपना बहुवचन बनाते हैं (जैसे men, women, children, people)।
Because these plural forms do not end in an s, they do not produce any harsh hissing sound. Therefore, you must add ‘s exactly as you would with a singular noun:
-
Children’s park (NOT childrens’ park)
குழந்தைகள் பூங்கா (Children’s park - childrens’ park அல்ல) Children’s park (childrens’ park नहीं) -
Women’s college (NOT womens’ college)
பெண்கள் கல்லூரி (Women’s college - womens’ college அல்ல) Women’s college (womens’ college नहीं) -
Men’s department
ஆண்கள் பிரிவு (Men’s department) Men’s department -
People’s choice
மக்களின் தேர்வு (People’s choice) People’s choice
4. Nouns Ending in Hissing Sounds
When a singular noun ends with an s, x, ce, or se sound, pronouncing another full s can create an uncomfortably harsh sound cluster. English manages these hissing sounds through specific phonetic conventions.
Classical, Biblical, and Literary Names
For established classical or biblical names ending in s, standard convention often adds only the apostrophe to maintain rhythmic pronunciation:
-
Moses’ laws
மோசேயின் சட்டங்கள் (Moses’ laws) Moses’ laws (मूसा के नियम) -
Pythagoras’ theorem
பிதாகரஸின் தேற்றம் (Pythagoras’ theorem) Pythagoras’ theorem (पाइथागोरस का प्रमेय) -
Archimedes’ principle
ஆர்க்கிமிடிஸின் தத்துவம் (Archimedes’ principle) Archimedes’ principle (आर्किमिडीज का सिद्धांत) -
Jesus’ disciples
இயேசுவின் சீடர்கள் (Jesus’ disciples) Jesus’ disciples (ईसा मसीह के शिष्य)
With modern personal names ending in s, both forms are acceptable in contemporary English (Keats’ poems or Keats’s poems; Charles’ book or Charles’s book). However, when following traditional British and Indian academic standards, adding only the apostrophe is preferred whenever an extra s creates an unnatural spoken cluster.
Expressions Ending in ‘Sake'
When a word ending in an s or ce sound is followed by the word sake, adding 's creates an intolerable tongue-twister. Standard English strictly drops the final s and keeps only the apostrophe:
-
For conscience’ sake (Correct)
மனசாட்சியின் பொருட்டு (For conscience’ sake - சரியானது) For conscience’ sake (सही) -
For conscience’s sake (Incorrect)
For conscience’s sake (தவறானது) For conscience’s sake (गलत) -
For goodness’ sake (Correct)
தயவுசெய்து (For goodness’ sake - சரியானது) For goodness’ sake (सही) -
For justice’ sake (Correct)
நீதியின் பொருட்டு (For justice’ sake - சரியானது) For justice’ sake (सही) -
For peace’ sake (Correct)
அமைதியின் பொருட்டு (For peace’ sake - சரியானது) For peace’ sake (सही)
5. Compound Nouns and Titles
When showing possession with a compound noun or a multi-word official title, add the apostrophe-s ('s) exclusively to the last word.
's) அமைப்பை இறுதிச் சொல்லில் மட்டுமே சேர்க்க வேண்டும். 's) केवल अंतिम शब्द के साथ लगाएं।
Do not confuse forming a plural compound noun with forming a possessive compound noun. As studied in earlier lessons, plurals are formed on the main root word (commanders-in-chief). But possessives are attached to the very end of the entire unit:
-
My father-in-law’s car (Correct)
My father-in-law’s car (சரியானது) My father-in-law’s car (सही) -
My father’s-in-law car (Incorrect)
My father’s-in-law car (தவறானது) My father’s-in-law car (गलत) -
The Commander-in-Chief’s orders (Correct)
The Commander-in-Chief’s orders (சரியானது) The Commander-in-Chief’s orders (सही) -
The Commander’s-in-Chief orders (Incorrect)
The Commander’s-in-Chief orders (தவறானது) The Commander’s-in-Chief orders (गलत) -
A passer-by’s comment (Correct)
A passer-by’s comment (சரியானது) A passer-by’s comment (सही) -
The Governor General’s residence (Correct)
The Governor General’s residence (சரியானது) The Governor General’s residence (सही)
Joint Possession, Separate Possession, and Structural Traps
When two or more individuals are involved in a possessive relationship, how you position the apostrophe communicates whether they share a single item or own separate items independently.
Joint Possession (Shared Ownership)
When two or more nouns jointly possess the same person, object, or concept, treat the linked group as a single combined unit. Add the apostrophe-s ('s) only to the last noun in the series:
's) சேர்க்க வேண்டும்: 's) जोड़ें:
-
Ram and Shyam’s father attended the meeting. (Ram and Shyam are brothers who share the same father.)
Ram and Shyam’s father கூட்டத்தில் கலந்துகொண்டார். (ராமும் ஷியாமும் ஒரே தந்தையைக் கொண்ட சகோதரர்கள்.) Ram and Shyam’s father attended the meeting. (राम और श्याम भाई हैं और उनके एक ही पिता हैं।) -
Rohan and Priya’s apartment is on the fifth floor. (They jointly live in and own one shared apartment.)
Rohan and Priya’s அடுக்குமாடிக் குடியிருப்பு ஐந்தாவது தளத்தில் உள்ளது. (அவர்கள் இருவரும் கூட்டாக வசிக்கும் ஒரே அடுக்குமாடிக் குடியிருப்பு.) Rohan and Priya’s apartment is on the fifth floor. (वे संयुक्त रूप से एक ही अपार्टमेंट में रहते हैं और उसके मालिक हैं।) -
Tata and Sons’ head office is located in Mumbai. (The enterprise is owned jointly as a single commercial firm.)
Tata and Sons’ தலைமை அலுவலகம் மும்பையில் அமைந்துள்ளது. (இந்த வணிக நிறுவனம் ஒரு கூட்டு வணிக அமைப்பாகச் சொந்தமாகக் கொள்ளப்பட்டுள்ளது.) Tata and Sons’ head office is located in Mumbai. (यह उद्यम एक एकल वाणिज्यिक फर्म के रूप में संयुक्त स्वामित्व में है।)
Because the item possessed is shared as one entity, the noun following the possessive is typically singular (unless the possessed item is inherently plural, such as books or credentials).
Separate Possession (Individual Ownership)
When two or more nouns possess their own individual items independently, each person must be marked as a separate owner. Add an apostrophe-s ('s) to every individual noun, and make the possessed noun plural:
's) சேர்த்து, உடைமைப் பொருளைக் குறிக்கும் Noun-ஐப் பன்மையாக (Plural) மாற்ற வேண்டும்: 's) जोड़ें, और स्वामित्व वाली वस्तु (Noun) को बहुवचन बनाएं:
-
Ram’s and Shyam’s fathers attended the meeting. (Ram has his own father, and Shyam has his own father; two distinct fathers were present.)
Ram’s and Shyam’s fathers கூட்டத்தில் கலந்துகொண்டார்கள். (ராமுக்குத் தனியாக ஒரு தந்தையும், ஷியாமுக்குத் தனியாக ஒரு தந்தையும் உள்ளனர்; இரு வேறு தந்தைகள் அங்கே வந்திருந்தனர்.) Ram’s and Shyam’s fathers attended the meeting. (राम के अपने पिता हैं और श्याम के अपने पिता हैं; दो अलग-अलग पिता उपस्थित थे।) -
Rohan’s and Priya’s apartments are on the fifth floor. (Rohan owns his apartment, and Priya owns her separate apartment.)
Rohan’s and Priya’s அடுக்குமாடிக் குடியிருப்புகள் ஐந்தாவது தளத்தில் உள்ளன. (ரோஹன் தன் சொந்தக் குடியிருப்பை வைத்துள்ளார், பிரியா தன் தனி அடுக்குமாடிக் குடியிருப்பை வைத்துள்ளார்.) Rohan’s and Priya’s apartments are on the fifth floor. (रोहन का अपना अपार्टमेंट है और प्रिया का अपना अलग अपार्टमेंट है।) -
Shakespeare’s and Milton’s poems reflect different historical eras. (Shakespeare authored his poems, and Milton authored a separate body of poems.)
Shakespeare’s and Milton’s கவிதைகள் வெவ்வேறு வரலாற்றுக் காலங்களைப் பிரதிபலிக்கின்றன. (ஷேக்ஸ்பியர் தனது கவிதைகளை எழுதினார், மில்டன் தனியாகத் தனது கவிதைகளை எழுதினார்.) Shakespeare’s and Milton’s poems reflect different historical eras. (शेक्सपियर ने अपनी कविताओं की रचना की और मिल्टन ने कविताओं के एक अलग संग्रह की रचना की।)
Analogy · Shop Signboards and Ownership Expand analogy
Think of two partners setting up a grocery store in a local Indian market. If both partners jointly run one single shop together, they hang one unified signboard above the shutter: Ramesh and Suresh’s Grocery. But if each person opens his own separate shop on opposite sides of the street, each independent shop requires its own personal name board: Ramesh’s and Suresh’s Groceries.
The Prohibition of Consecutive Double Possessives
A frequent error pattern occurs when two apostrophes are chained together on adjacent nouns to indicate nested ownership (Noun A’s Noun B’s Noun C).
While such phrasing may occasionally appear in hurried speech, formal standard English strictly prohibits chaining consecutive apostrophes. Chained possessives sound harsh, disrupt clarity, and create syntactical ambiguity.
To correct a consecutive double possessive, replace the first possessive link with an of construction, placing the primary possessed item first:
-
Incorrect: My friend’s father’s house is under renovation.
Incorrect: My friend’s father’s house is under renovation. गलत: My friend’s father’s house is under renovation. -
Correct: The house of my friend’s father is under renovation.
Correct: The house of my friend’s father is under renovation. सही: The house of my friend’s father is under renovation. -
Incorrect: My wife’s secretary’s mother has fallen ill.
Incorrect: My wife’s secretary’s mother has fallen ill. गलत: My wife’s secretary’s mother has fallen ill. -
Correct: The mother of my wife’s secretary has fallen ill.
Correct: The mother of my wife’s secretary has fallen ill. सही: The mother of my wife’s secretary has fallen ill. -
Incorrect: Rohan’s brother’s car was stolen last night.
Incorrect: Rohan’s brother’s car was stolen last night. गलत: Rohan’s brother’s car was stolen last night. -
Correct: The car of Rohan’s brother was stolen last night.
Correct: The car of Rohan’s brother was stolen last night. सही: The car of Rohan’s brother was stolen last night.
By restructuring the sentence with of, the relationship flows naturally and eliminates phonetic clutter.
Indefinite Pronouns and the Position of ‘Else’
Indefinite pronouns such as somebody, anybody, everyone, nobody, and someone take an apostrophe-s directly when indicating possession:
-
That must be somebody’s notebook.
அது யாரோ ஒருவருடைய (somebody’s) நோட்டுப் புத்தகமாக இருக்க வேண்டும். वह निश्चित रूप से किसी की नोटबुक होगी। -
It is everyone’s responsibility to keep the park clean.
பூங்காவைத் தூய்மையாக வைத்திருப்பது அனைவரின் (everyone’s) பொறுப்பாகும். पार्क को साफ रखना हर किसी की जिम्मेदारी है।
However, when these pronouns are followed by the modifier else, the pronoun and else form a single compound unit. The possessive 's must shift to the word else:
's அமைப்பானது else என்ற சொல்லுக்கு மாற வேண்டும்: 's else शब्द पर स्थानांतरित होना चाहिए:
-
This is somebody else’s umbrella. (Correct)
This is somebody else’s umbrella. (சரியானது) This is somebody else’s umbrella. (सही) -
This is somebody’s else umbrella. (Incorrect)
This is somebody’s else umbrella. (தவறானது) This is somebody’s else umbrella. (गलत) -
You should not interfere in anyone else’s personal affairs. (Correct)
You should not interfere in anyone else’s personal affairs. (சரியானது) You should not interfere in anyone else’s personal affairs. (सही) -
The decision was nobody else’s choice. (Correct)
The decision was nobody else’s choice. (சரியானது) The decision was nobody else’s choice. (सही)
Placing the apostrophe on the pronoun (somebody’s else) is grammatically incorrect because else modifies the entire unit and stands at the edge of the phrase.
Possessive Case Preceding Gerunds
In English, when a verb ending in -ing functions as a noun to name an activity or action, it is known as a Gerund (such as swimming, coming, reading, or resigning). Because a gerund functions syntactically as a noun, the word modifying it must show who performs or owns that action.
In formal English, a noun directly preceding a gerund must be placed in the Possessive Case ('s), rather than the objective case.
's) வைக்கப்பட வேண்டும். 's) में रखा जाना चाहिए।
Understanding the Logic Behind the Rule
Consider this pair of sentences:
-
Sentence A: She was upset by Rohan coming late.
Sentence A: She was upset by Rohan coming late. Sentence A: She was upset by Rohan coming late. -
Sentence B: She was upset by Rohan’s coming late.
Sentence B: She was upset by Rohan’s coming late. Sentence B: She was upset by Rohan’s coming late.
In Sentence A, the grammatical structure suggests she was upset by Rohan himself. But in reality, she was not upset with Rohan as a person; she was upset with the action of coming late. Because the action (the gerund coming) is the true object causing her reaction, that action belongs to Rohan. Therefore, Sentence B (Rohan’s coming) is the grammatically correct construction:
-
The director appreciated Sunil’s handling of the crisis. (Correct)
The director appreciated Sunil’s handling of the crisis. (சரியானது) The director appreciated Sunil’s handling of the crisis. (सही) -
The director appreciated Sunil handling of the crisis. (Incorrect)
The director appreciated Sunil handling of the crisis. (தவறானது) The director appreciated Sunil handling of the crisis. (गलत) -
My father objected to Kunal’s staying out past midnight. (Correct)
My father objected to Kunal’s staying out past midnight. (சரியானது) My father objected to Kunal’s staying out past midnight. (सही) -
My father objected to Kunal staying out past midnight. (Incorrect)
My father objected to Kunal staying out past midnight. (தவறானது) My father objected to Kunal staying out past midnight. (गलत) -
The board approved of the manager’s resigning from office. (Correct)
The board approved of the manager’s resigning from office. (சரியானது) The board approved of the manager’s resigning from office. (सही)
Pronouns preceding a gerund follow this exact same possessive requirement (such as his going or my asking), which we will examine in detail in our dedicated chapter on Pronouns. Similarly, the deeper mechanics of gerunds and participles are fully explored in later chapters on non-finite verbs.
Gerund vs. Participle: A Crucial Distinction
Do not confuse a gerund with a present participle. When an -ing word describes what a person is actively doing at the moment of perception, the noun is the direct object and does not take an apostrophe:
-ing சொல் விவரிக்கும் போது, அந்த Noun நேரடி செயப்படுபொருளாக (Direct Object) அமைகிறது; அதற்கு apostrophe தேவையில்லை: -ing शब्द यह बताता है कि कोई व्यक्ति देखने या महसूस करने के क्षण में सक्रिय रूप से क्या कर रहा है, तो Noun प्रत्यक्ष कर्म (Direct Object) होता है और एपोस्ट्रोफी नहीं लेता है:
-
I saw Rohan running toward the bus. (Here, running describes the person observed; Rohan is in the objective case.)
I saw Rohan running toward the bus. (இங்கே, running என்பது கவனிக்கப்பட்ட நபரை விவரிக்கிறது; Rohan என்பது Objective Case-ல் உள்ளது.) I saw Rohan running toward the bus. (यहाँ, running देखे गए व्यक्ति का वर्णन करता है; Rohan Objective Case में है।) -
I admired Rohan’s running. (Here, running is the athletic technique or act itself; Rohan’s is in the possessive case.)
I admired Rohan’s running. (இங்கே, running என்பது அந்த ஓட்ட நுட்பத்தை அல்லது செயலையே குறிக்கிறது; Rohan’s என்பது Possessive Case-ல் உள்ளது.) I admired Rohan’s running. (यहाँ, running खेल तकनीक या स्वयं दौड़ने की क्रिया है; Rohan’s Possessive Case में है।)
Common Possession Traps at a Glance
The following diagnostic table contrasts common possessive errors with their standard grammatical corrections:
| Construction Category | Incorrect Phrasing | Correct Phrasing | Grammatical Principle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inanimate Object | The table’s drawer | The drawer of the table | Non-living things use the of construction. |
| Time Expression | A three days leave | A three days’ leave | Units of time allow possessive apostrophes. |
| Hissing Sound + Sake | For conscience’s sake | For conscience’ sake | Hissing sound before sake takes only an apostrophe. |
| Compound Noun | My father’s-in-law house | My father-in-law’s house | Apostrophe attaches to the final word of the compound. |
| Joint Ownership | Suresh’s and Ramesh’s shop | Suresh and Ramesh’s shop | Shared ownership places 's only on the last noun. |
| Separate Ownership | Suresh and Ramesh’s cars | Suresh’s and Ramesh’s cars | Independent ownership requires 's on both nouns. |
| Chained Apostrophes | My uncle’s driver’s car | The car of my uncle’s driver | Avoid consecutive apostrophes; use of. |
| Indefinite Pronoun + Else | Someone’s else coat | Someone else’s coat | The possessive marker attaches to else. |
| Noun Preceding Gerund | Disapproved of Amit shouting | Disapproved of Amit’s shouting | Nouns modifying a gerund take the possessive case. |
Key Takeaways
-
Grammatical case identifies the functional role of a noun within a clause, distinguishing subjects (Nominative), direct objects (Objective), recipients (Dative), and direct address (Vocative).
The inflected possessive with an apostrophe (
's) is reserved primarily for living beings, whereas non-living objects express possession through the prepositional of construction. -
Non-living nouns take possessive apostrophes exclusively in five standard exceptions: time, distance, weight, personification, and established idiomatic phrases.
Plural nouns ending in an
-stake only an apostrophe at the end, whereas irregular plurals without an-srequire an apostrophe followed bys.-s-ல் முடியும் பன்மைப் பெயர்ச்சொற்கள் இறுதியில் apostrophe மட்டுமே ஏற்கின்றன; ஆனால்-sஇல்லாத ஒழுங்கற்ற பன்மைப் பெயர்ச்சொற்கள் apostrophe-ஐயும் அதைத் தொடர்ந்துs-ஐயும் ஏற்கின்றன.-sपर समाप्त होने वाले बहुवचन Nouns अंत में केवल एक एपोस्ट्रोफी लेते हैं, जबकि बिना-sवाले अनियमित बहुवचन Nouns में एपोस्ट्रोफी के बादsकी आवश्यकता होती है। -
Joint possession requires an apostrophe only on the final noun of the series, while separate possession requires an apostrophe on each noun independently.
Chaining consecutive apostrophes on adjacent nouns is strictly prohibited in standard English and must be rephrased using of.
Nouns directly modifying a gerund must be placed in the possessive case to identify the owner of the action.
செயலின் உரிமையாளரை அடையாளம் காட்ட, ஒரு தொழிற்பெயரை (Gerund) நேரடியாக விவரிக்கும் பெயர்ச்சொற்கள் உடைமை வேற்றுமையில் (Possessive Case) வைக்கப்பட வேண்டும். क्रिया के कर्ता/स्वामी की पहचान करने के लिए Gerund की प्रत्यक्ष विशेषता बताने वाले Nouns को Possessive Case में रखा जाना चाहिए।
