Singular and Plural Nouns: Regular, Irregular, and Foreign Formations
Master regular and irregular plural formations, foreign plurals, compound nouns, and invariant noun categories in English with practical examples.
The Architecture of Grammatical Number
Every time you speak or write, you must tell your listener how many items you are referring to. When you point to a solitary object on your desk, such as a single pen or a single notebook, your language marks that item as one unit. The moment you place another pen beside it, the structure of the word itself changes to signal that you are now dealing with more than one.
This fundamental distinction of quantity is known as Number. When a noun names a single person, animal, place, or thing, it is in the Singular Number. When it refers to more than one entity, it enters the Plural Number.
In Indian languages, this concept is completely natural. Tamil distinguishes between ஒருமை (singular) and பன்மை (plural), just as Hindi distinguishes between एकवचन (singular) and बहुवचन (plural). In both languages, changing a word from singular to plural transforms its ending:
- Tamil: புத்தகம் (one book) becomes புத்தகங்கள் (multiple books).
- Hindi: किताब (one book) becomes किताबें (multiple books).
English operates on the very same conceptual foundation, but its execution is far more varied. Because modern English developed by absorbing layers of Germanic dialects, Norman French, Latin, and Classical Greek, its pluralization rules do not follow a single, unbroken pattern.
In the previous lesson, we analyzed the boundary between countable and uncountable nouns, establishing that only countable nouns possess legitimate plural forms. In this lesson, we will deconstruct the exact morphological mechanisms that govern how countable nouns transform from singular to plural, tracing every regular rule, historical mutation, classical foreign borrowing, and compound structure.
Regular Plural Formations and Orthographic Patterns
The most straightforward way English creates a plural noun is by adding a suffix to the end of the base singular word. This process, known as Regular Pluralization, follows consistent phonetic and spelling rules based on the final letter and sound of the singular noun.
Standard Suffixation with -s and -es
For the vast majority of English nouns, forming the plural requires nothing more than attaching the letter -s to the singular form:
- student becomes students
student என்பது students என மாறுகிறது student बदलकर students हो जाता है - table becomes tables
table என்பது tables என மாறுகிறது table बदलकर tables हो जाता है - bank becomes banks
bank என்பது banks என மாறுகிறது bank बदलकर banks हो जाता है
However, when a singular noun ends in a hissing or sibilant sound (spelled with -s, -ss, -sh, -ch, -x, or -z), adding only -s would create an unpronounceable clash of consonants. Try pronouncing class-s or box-s without a pause; your vocal tract cannot articulate two sibilants back-to-back. To bridge this phonetic gap, English inserts the vowel e before the s, creating the suffix -es and adding an extra spoken syllable:
- bus becomes buses
There is a vital phonetic exception to this rule. When the letters -ch at the end of a word are pronounced with a hard /k/ sound (usually in words derived from Greek) rather than the soft /tʃ/ sound heard in church, no hissing sound exists. Consequently, the word takes only -s:
- monarch becomes monarchs (pronounced /ˈmɒn.ək.s/)
Analogy · Train Coaches and Couplers Expand analogy
Think of regular pluralization like attaching passenger coaches on the Indian railway network. For most words, a standard coupler (the letter -s) snaps into place easily without mechanical friction. However, when a word ends in a sharp hissing sound like -sh or -x, attaching a raw -s creates a severe acoustic crash. To prevent this, English inserts a rubber vestibule buffer (the vowel -e-), forming -es so the two sounds link together smoothly.
The Consonant and Vowel Alternation with -y
Nouns that end in the letter -y fall into two distinct orthographic categories depending entirely on the letter immediately preceding the -y:
-
Consonant + y: When a consonant precedes the final -y, the y changes to i, and -es is added to form the ending -ies:
- city (consonant t + y) becomes cities
-
Vowel + y: When a vowel (a, e, i, o, u) precedes the final -y, the base word remains completely intact, and you simply add -s:
உயிரெழுத்து + y: கடைசி -y-க்கு முன்னால் ஓர் உயிரெழுத்து (Vowel - a, e, i, o, u) வரும்போது, அடிப்படை வார்த்தை மாற்றமடையாமல் அப்படியே இருக்கும்; அத்துடன் வெறும் -s மட்டும் சேர்க்கப்படுகிறது: स्वर (Vowel) + y: जब अंतिम -y से पहले कोई स्वर (a, e, i, o, u) आता है, तो मूल शब्द पूरी तरह से अपरिवर्तित रहता है, और आपको केवल -s जोड़ना होता है: - boy (vowel o + y) becomes boys
donkey (உயிரெழுத்து e + y) என்பது donkeys என மாறுகிறது donkey (स्वर e + y) बदलकर donkeys हो जाता है - tray (vowel a + y) becomes trays
tray (உயிரெழுத்து a + y) என்பது trays என மாறுகிறது tray (स्वर a + y) बदलकर trays हो जाता है
- boy (vowel o + y) becomes boys
A very frequent spelling trap occurs with words like valley and donkey. Writers sometimes mistakenly apply the first rule and write valleies or donkies. Always inspect the letter directly before the -y; if it is a vowel, never remove or alter the y.
The Vowel Alternation with -o and Its Exceptions
Nouns ending in the letter -o follow a dual pattern that reflects their linguistic origin:
Nouns Ending in Consonant + o
When a singular noun ends in a consonant followed by -o, it typically forms its plural by adding -es:
- hero becomes heroes
The Foreign and Abbreviation Exceptions
Certain nouns ending in a consonant followed by -o take only -s. These words fall into two primary categories: terms borrowed directly from Italian or other languages (especially musical terms), and words that are shortened forms of longer words:
- photo (shortened from photograph) becomes photos
photo (photograph என்பதன் சுருக்கம்) என்பது photos என மாறுகிறது photo (photograph का संक्षिप्त रूप) बदलकर photos हो जाता है - piano (musical term from Italian) becomes pianos
dynamo என்பது dynamos என மாறுகிறது dynamo बदलकर dynamos हो जाता है - canto (literary term from Italian) becomes cantos
canto (இத்தாலிய மொழியிலிருந்து வந்த இலக்கியச் சொல்) என்பது cantos என மாறுகிறது canto (इतालवी से लिया गया साहित्यिक शब्द) बदलकर cantos हो जाता है
Nouns Ending in Vowel + o
When a singular noun ends in a vowel followed by -o, it always takes only -s:
- radio becomes radios
radio என்பது radios என மாறுகிறது radio बदलकर radios हो जाता है - portfolio becomes portfolios
portfolio என்பது portfolios என மாறுகிறது portfolio बदलकर portfolios हो जाता है - bamboo becomes bamboos
bamboo என்பது bamboos என மாறுகிறது bamboo बदलकर bamboos हो जाता है - cuckoo becomes cuckoos
cuckoo என்பது cuckoos என மாறுகிறது cuckoo बदलकर cuckoos हो जाता है
Nouns Ending in -f or -fe: The Voicing Shift and Its Invariants
In Old English, the voiceless consonant sound /f/ automatically shifted to a voiced /v/ sound whenever it was trapped between two vowels. Over centuries, English spelling adapted to reflect this spoken shift: the ending -f or -fe changes to -ves in the plural:
- leaf becomes leaves
leaf என்பது leaves என மாறுகிறது leaf बदलकर leaves हो जाता है - thief becomes thieves
thief என்பது thieves என மாறுகிறது thief बदलकर thieves हो जाता है - wife becomes wives
wife என்பது wives என மாறுகிறது wife बदलकर wives हो जाता है - knife becomes knives
knife என்பது knives என மாறுகிறது knife बदलकर knives हो जाता है - life becomes lives
life என்பது lives என மாறுகிறது life बदलकर lives हो जाता है - half becomes halves
half என்பது halves என மாறுகிறது half बदलकर halves हो जाता है - shelf becomes shelves
shelf என்பது shelves என மாறுகிறது shelf बदलकर shelves हो जाता है - wolf becomes wolves
wolf என்பது wolves என மாறுகிறது wolf बदलकर wolves हो जाता है
The Invariant -f Group (Taking Only -s)
Not all words ending in -f or -fe undergo this voicing change. A significant group of nouns retains the voiceless /f/ sound and simply adds -s. These must be noted carefully to prevent mistaken transformations:
| Singular Noun | Correct Plural Form | Incorrect Form |
|---|---|---|
| chief | chiefs | chieves |
| belief | beliefs | believes (this is a verb, not a plural noun) |
| roof | roofs | rooves |
| proof | proofs | prooves |
| cliff | cliffs | clivves |
| gulf | gulfs | gulves |
| safe (a security locker) | safes | saves (this is a verb) |
| grief | griefs | grieves (this is a verb) |
Notice the words belief and safe. In English, believes and saves are third-person singular verbs (for example, “She believes the truth” or “He saves money”), whereas the plural noun forms are strictly beliefs and safes.
Words with Dual Plural Forms
A small set of nouns ending in -f permits both endings in modern standard English, though the -ves ending remains traditional:
- dwarf becomes dwarfs or dwarves
dwarf என்பது dwarfs அல்லது dwarves என மாறுகிறது dwarf बदलकर dwarfs या dwarves हो जाता है - scarf becomes scarfs or scarves
scarf என்பது scarfs அல்லது scarves என மாறுகிறது scarf बदलकर scarfs या scarves हो जाता है - wharf becomes wharfs or wharves
wharf என்பது wharfs அல்லது wharves என மாறுகிறது wharf बदलकर wharfs या wharves हो जाता है - hoof becomes hoofs or hooves
hoof என்பது hoofs அல்லது hooves என மாறுகிறது hoof बदलकर hoofs या hooves हो जाता है
Irregular Native Plurals: Internal Mutation and Archaic Suffixes
Not every plural in English is formed by tagging a suffix to the end of a word. A small group of ancient Germanic words forms the plural by transforming their internal vowel sounds. Because these words represent elemental human concepts (body parts, family members, common domestic animals), they resisted the historical pressure to adopt the standard -s suffix and preserved their ancient structures into modern speech.
Internal Vowel Mutation (Umlaut Plurals)
In this class of nouns, the plural is signaled entirely by shifting the primary vowel inside the word. No suffix is attached to the tail of the noun:
- man becomes men
man என்பது men என மாறுகிறது man बदलकर men हो जाता है - woman becomes women (notice that while the spelling changes only the second syllable, the spoken pronunciation changes the first vowel from /ˈwʊm.ən/ to /ˈwɪm.ɪn/)
The Double Pluralization Trap
Because these mutated forms do not end in -s, speakers who rely on surface patterns often make the mistake of adding an extra -s to them. Formations like childrens, mens, womens, feets, or teeths represent redundant double pluralization.
These words are already completely plural on their own. Once foot shifts to feet or tooth shifts to teeth, the transformation is fully complete:
- Incorrect: The child brushed all his teeths.
தவறானது: The child brushed all his teeths. अशुद्ध: The child brushed all his teeths. - Correct: The child brushed all his teeth.
சரியானது: The child brushed all his teeth. शुद्ध: The child brushed all his teeth. - Incorrect: Several womens participated in the village meeting.
தவறானது: Several womens participated in the village meeting. अशुद्ध: Several womens participated in the village meeting. - Correct: Several women participated in the village meeting.
சரியானது: Several women participated in the village meeting. शुद्ध: Several women participated in the village meeting.
Ancient Suffixation in -en
Centuries ago, English formed many plurals with the suffix -en, in a manner similar to modern German. In contemporary English, only two primary words still use this Germanic pattern in everyday speech:
- ox becomes oxen (never oxes)
ox என்பது oxen என மாறுகிறது (ஒருபோதும் oxes அல்ல) ox बदलकर oxen हो जाता है (कभी oxes नहीं) - child becomes children (historically a double plural combining an ancient plural ending -er with -en)
child என்பது children என மாறுகிறது (வரலாற்று ரீதியாக இது -er என்ற பண்டைய பன்மை ஈற்றையும் -en பின்னொட்டையும் இணைத்த ஓர் இரட்டைப் பன்மை ஆகும்) child बदलकर children हो जाता है (ऐतिहासिक रूप से यह एक दोहरा बहुवचन है जो प्राचीन बहुवचन प्रत्यय -er और -en को जोड़कर बना है)
A third term, brother, splits into two separate plural forms based on meaning:
- brothers: Used for male siblings who share the same parents (for example, “Rahul has two younger brothers”).
brothers: ஒரே பெற்றோரைப் பகிர்ந்து கொள்ளும் ஆண் உடன்பிறப்புகளுக்குப் பயன்படுத்தப்படுகிறது (எடுத்துக்காட்டாக, “Rahul has two younger brothers”). brothers: इसका प्रयोग एक ही माता-पिता के सगे भाइयों के लिए किया जाता है (उदाहरण के लिए, “Rahul has two younger brothers”)। - brethren: Used metaphorically to refer to fellow members of a religious society, spiritual community, or professional fraternity (for example, “The monks welcomed their visiting brethren”). Notice that brethren is already plural and never takes an -s.
brethren: ஒரு மதச் சமூகம், ஆன்மீகக் குழு அல்லது தொழில்முறை அமைப்பின் சக உறுப்பினர்களை உருவகமாகக் குறிப்பிடப் பயன்படுத்தப்படுகிறது (எடுத்துக்காட்டாக, “The monks welcomed their visiting brethren”). brethren என்பது ஏற்கனவே பன்மை வடிவத்தில் உள்ளதால், ஒருபோதும் -s ஏற்காது என்பதைக் கவனியுங்கள். brethren: इसका उपयोग लाक्षणिक रूप से किसी धार्मिक समाज, आध्यात्मिक समुदाय या व्यावसायिक बिरादरी के साथी सदस्यों के लिए किया जाता है (उदाहरण के लिए, “The monks welcomed their visiting brethren”)। ध्यान दें कि brethren पहले से ही बहुवचन है और इसमें कभी भी -s नहीं लगता है।
Classical Foreign Plurals: Latin, Greek, and Romance Borrowings
During the expansion of scientific, medical, and legal scholarship, English adopted hundreds of words directly from Classical Latin and Ancient Greek. Rather than forcing these words into standard English patterns, scholars initially preserved the original grammatical endings of those ancient languages.
Understanding these classical patterns eliminates confusion when navigating technical and formal English.
Latin Borrowings in -us, -um, and -a
Latin nouns are categorized by their endings, and each category follows a distinctive transformation rule:
Singular -us becomes Plural -i
Many masculine Latin nouns ending in -us replace this ending with -i (pronounced /-aɪ/):
- alumnus (a male graduate) becomes alumni
alumnus (பட்டம் பெற்ற ஆண் முன்னாள் மாணவர்) என்பது alumni என மாறுகிறது alumnus (एक पुरुष स्नातक) बदलकर alumni हो जाता है - radius becomes radii
radius என்பது radii என மாறுகிறது radius बदलकर radii हो जाता है - stimulus becomes stimuli
stimulus என்பது stimuli என மாறுகிறது stimulus बदलकर stimuli हो जाता है - focus becomes foci (or focuses)
focus என்பது foci (அல்லது focuses) என மாறுகிறது focus बदलकर foci (या focuses) हो जाता है - fungus becomes fungi (or funguses)
fungus என்பது fungi (அல்லது funguses) என மாறுகிறது fungus बदलकर fungi (या funguses) हो जाता है - terminus becomes termini
terminus என்பது termini என மாறுகிறது terminus बदलकर termini हो जाता है - syllabus becomes syllabi (or syllabuses)
syllabus என்பது syllabi (அல்லது syllabuses) என மாறுகிறது syllabus बदलकर syllabi (या syllabuses) हो जाता है
Singular -um becomes Plural -a
Neuter Latin nouns ending in -um form their plurals by replacing -um with -a:
- datum becomes data

Singular -a becomes Plural -ae
Feminine Latin nouns ending in -a form their plurals by adding an -e to become -ae (pronounced /-iː/):
- alumna (a female graduate) becomes alumnae
vertebra என்பது vertebrae என மாறுகிறது vertebra बदलकर vertebrae हो जाता है - antenna becomes antennae (in biology, referring to insect feelers) or antennas (in electronics, referring to metallic aerials)
antenna என்பது உயிரியலில் பூச்சிகளின் உணர் உறுப்புகளைக் குறிக்கும் போது antennae என்றும், மின்னணுவியலில் உலோக ஆன்டெனாக்களைக் குறிக்கும் போது antennas என்றும் மாறுகிறது antenna बदलकर antennae (जीव विज्ञान में, कीटों के स्पर्शक) या antennas (इलेक्ट्रॉनिक्स में, धातु के एरियल) हो जाता है
Singular -ex or -ix becomes Plural -ices
Latin nouns ending in -ex or -ix drop that ending and take -ices:
- index becomes indices (in mathematics and economics) or indexes (alphabetical lists at the end of books)
Greek Borrowings in -is and -on
Classical Greek loanwords follow two primary patterns that frequently appear in academic discussions:
Singular -is becomes Plural -es
Nouns ending in -is change to -es. The spelling difference is only one letter, but the pronunciation alters significantly from the short /-ɪs/ sound to a long /-iːz/ sound:
- crisis (one critical moment) becomes crises (multiple critical moments)
Singular -on becomes Plural -a
Greek neuter nouns ending in -on drop this syllable and take -a:
- phenomenon becomes phenomena
phenomenon என்பது phenomena என மாறுகிறது phenomenon बदलकर phenomena हो जाता है - criterion becomes criteria
criterion என்பது criteria என மாறுகிறது criterion बदलकर criteria हो जाता है
A common pitfall is the creation of non-existent words like phenomenas or criterias. Because phenomena and criteria are already plural, adding -s is an error:
- Incorrect: The committee established three new criterias for selection.
தவறானது: The committee established three new criterias for selection. अशुद्ध: The committee established three new criterias for selection. - Correct: The committee established three new criteria for selection.
சரியானது: The committee established three new criteria for selection. शुद्ध: The committee established three new criteria for selection. - Incorrect: Solar eclipses are fascinating natural phenomenas.
தவறானது: Solar eclipses are fascinating natural phenomenas. अशुद्ध: Solar eclipses are fascinating natural phenomenas. - Correct: Solar eclipses are fascinating natural phenomena.
சரியானது: Solar eclipses are fascinating natural phenomena. शुद्ध: Solar eclipses are fascinating natural phenomena.
French, Italian, and Hebrew Plural Formations
English has also borrowed words from French, Italian, and Hebrew, retaining their distinctive plural habits:
French Loanwords in -eau
Nouns borrowed from French ending in -eau traditionally add a silent -x in the plural:
- bureau becomes bureaux (or the anglicized form bureaus)
Italian Loanwords in -o
Musical and cultural terms borrowed from Italian often alter to -i:
- virtuoso becomes virtuosi (or virtuosos)
virtuoso என்பது virtuosi (அல்லது virtuosos) என மாறுகிறது virtuoso बदलकर virtuosi (या virtuosos) हो जाता है - bandit becomes banditti (historical or literary) or the standard English form bandits
Hebrew Loanwords in -im
Words of Hebrew origin add the suffix -im:
- cherub becomes cherubim (when referring to celestial angelic beings) or cherubs (when referring to depictions of sweet, chubby-cheeked children)

| French | -eau | -eaux | bureau | bureaux | bureaues |
Pluralization of Compound Nouns
A Compound Noun is formed when two or more words join together to create a single naming unit (such as father-in-law, passer-by, or maidservant). When transforming a compound noun into its plural form, you cannot simply attach -s to the very end of the final word. Instead, you must identify which component is the grammatical anchor of the phrase.
Identifying the Principal Head Noun
The fundamental rule for pluralizing compound nouns is straightforward: add the plural suffix to the principal word (the head noun) that carries the core semantic meaning:
- commander-in-chief becomes commanders-in-chief (the commanders are the individuals being counted, not the chief)
mother-in-law என்பது mothers-in-law என மாறுகிறது mother-in-law बदलकर mothers-in-law हो जाता है - step-son becomes step-sons (here, son is the principal noun, while step is a modifier)
step-son என்பது step-sons என மாறுகிறது (இங்கு son என்பது முதன்மை Noun, step என்பது ஒரு விவரிப்பான்) step-son बदलकर step-sons हो जाता है (यहाँ son मुख्य Noun है, जबकि step एक संशोधक यानी Modifier है) - step-daughter becomes step-daughters
step-daughter என்பது step-daughters என மாறுகிறது step-daughter बदलकर step-daughters हो जाता है - maidservant becomes maidservants (here, servant is the principal noun)
maidservant என்பது maidservants என மாறுகிறது (இங்கு servant என்பது முதன்மை Noun) maidservant बदलकर maidservants हो जाता है (यहाँ servant मुख्य Noun है) - court-martial becomes courts-martial (in this historical borrowing, court is the noun, while martial is an adjective meaning military)
court-martial என்பது courts-martial என மாறுகிறது (இந்த வரலாற்று கடன்சொல்லில், court என்பது Noun, martial என்பது ராணுவத்தைக் குறிக்கும் Adjective) court-martial बदलकर courts-martial हो जाता है (इस ऐतिहासिक शब्द में, court संज्ञा है, जबकि martial एक विशेषण यानी Adjective है जिसका अर्थ सैन्य है) - governor-general becomes governors-general (the governors are the persons held in office)
governor-general என்பது governors-general என மாறுகிறது (ஆளுநர்களே அந்தப் பதவியை வகிக்கும் நபர்கள்) governor-general बदलकर governors-general हो जाता है (यहाँ governors वे व्यक्ति हैं जो पद पर आसीन हैं)
Compounds with Prepositions and Adverbs
When a compound consists of a noun linked with an adverb or preposition, the plural -s must attach strictly to the noun, never to the prepositional particle:
- passer-by becomes passers-by (a passer is a person walking past; never write passer-bys or passer-bies)
passer-by என்பது passers-by என மாறுகிறது (passer என்பது கடந்து செல்லும் நபரைக் குறிக்கும்; ஒருபோதும் passer-bys அல்லது passer-bies என்று எழுதக்கூடாது) passer-by बदलकर passers-by हो जाता है (यहाँ passer पास से गुजरने वाला व्यक्ति है; कभी भी passer-bys या passer-bies न लिखें) - looker-on becomes lookers-on (a spectator; never looker-ons)
looker-on என்பது lookers-on என மாறுகிறது (பார்வையாளர்; ஒருபோதும் looker-ons அல்ல) looker-on बदलकर lookers-on हो जाता है (दर्शक; कभी looker-ons नहीं) - runner-up becomes runners-up (the competitors finishing second; never runner-ups)
runner-up என்பது runners-up என மாறுகிறது (இரண்டாம் இடம் பிடித்த போட்டியாளர்கள்; ஒருபோதும் runner-ups அல்ல) runner-up बदलकर runners-up हो जाता है (दूसरे स्थान पर रहने वाले प्रतियोगी; कभी runner-ups नहीं) - hanger-on becomes hangers-on
hanger-on என்பது hangers-on என மாறுகிறது hanger-on बदलकर hangers-on हो जाता है
Compounds Without an Obvious Head Noun
Some compound words do not contain an independent noun functioning as the head. These usually consist of a verb combined with an adverb, or an idiomatic phrase acting as a noun. In such cases, the plural marker attaches to the very end of the entire compound unit:
- forget-me-not (a type of flowering plant) becomes forget-me-nots
forget-me-not (ஒரு வகை பூக்கும் தாவரம்) என்பது forget-me-nots என மாறுகிறது forget-me-not (एक प्रकार का फूल वाला पौधा) बदलकर forget-me-nots हो जाता है - grown-up becomes grown-ups
grown-up என்பது grown-ups என மாறுகிறது grown-up बदलकर grown-ups हो जाता है - stand-by becomes stand-bys
stand-by என்பது stand-bys என மாறுகிறது stand-by बदलकर stand-bys हो जाता है - break-down becomes break-downs
break-down என்பது break-downs என மாறுகிறது break-down बदलकर break-downs हो जाता है
Words Ending in -ful
Compound expressions ending in -ful represent units of measure. Modern English treats them as unified nouns rather than separate parts. Therefore, the plural suffix attaches to the end:
- handful becomes handfuls (not handsful)
handful என்பது handfuls என மாறுகிறது (handsful அல்ல) handful बदलकर handfuls हो जाता है (handsful नहीं) - spoonful becomes spoonfuls (not spoonsful)
spoonful என்பது spoonfuls என மாறுகிறது (spoonsful அல்ல) spoonful बदलकर spoonfuls हो जाता है (spoonsful नहीं) - cupful becomes cupfuls (not cupsful)
cupful என்பது cupfuls என மாறுகிறது (cupsful அல்ல) cupful बदलकर cupfuls हो जाता है (cupsful नहीं) - mouthful becomes mouthfuls
mouthful என்பது mouthfuls என மாறுகிறது mouthful बदलकर mouthfuls हो जाता है
Dual Pluralization: Compounds Formed with Man and Woman
When a compound word begins with man or woman to indicate the gender of a person performing a professional role, both words are nouns, and both components must be pluralized:
- man-servant becomes men-servants
However, if man is used simply as a suffix to indicate a person’s general identity or profession without an independent occupational noun, only the final element alters:
- postman becomes postmen
postman என்பது postmen என மாறுகிறது postman बदलकर postmen हो जाता है - statesman becomes statesmen
statesman என்பது statesmen என மாறுகிறது statesman बदलकर statesmen हो जाता है - fisherman becomes fishermen
fisherman என்பது fishermen என மாறுகிறது fisherman बदलकर fishermen हो जाता है
The False Compound Trap
Be careful not to confuse single, non-compound words ending in the letters -man with native English compounds:
- German becomes Germans (not Germen, because German is a single nationality name, not an English compound of man)
Special Morphological Classes: Invariance and Functional Number
English contains several unique categories of nouns where the relationship between physical form and grammatical number departs from the standard rules. Recognizing these special classes ensures you never add an unauthorized plural suffix or misidentify the number of a noun.
Nouns Singular in Form but Inherently Plural
A critical group of English nouns carries no plural suffix at all, yet represents multiple individuals by its very definition. These nouns are singular in form, but inherently plural in meaning and function:
- police
police (காவல்துறை) police - cattle
cattle (கால்நடைகள்) cattle - clergy (ordained ministers and religious leaders)
clergy (மதகுருமார்கள் மற்றும் ஆன்மீகத் தலைவர்கள்) clergy (दीक्षित पादरी और धार्मिक नेता) - gentry (people of noble birth or high social standing)
gentry (உயர் சமூக அந்தஸ்து கொண்ட பிரபுக்கள்) gentry (कुलीन या उच्च सामाजिक वर्ग के लोग) - poultry (domestic fowls such as chickens, ducks, and geese)
poultry (கோழி, வாத்து போன்ற வளர்ப்புப் பறவைகள்) poultry (पालतू पक्षी जैसे मुर्गियां, बत्तख और बत्तख प्रजाति) - vermin (wild animals or insects harmful to crops or health)
vermin (பயிர்களுக்கும் ஆரோக்கியத்திற்கும் தீங்கு விளைவிக்கும் பூச்சிகள் அல்லது விலங்குகள்) vermin (फसलों या स्वास्थ्य के लिए हानिकारक कीड़े या परजीवी) - peasantry (small farmers and agricultural workers)
peasantry (விவசாயக் கூலிகள் மற்றும் சிறு விவசாயிகள்) peasantry (छोटे किसान और खेतिहर मजदूर) - folk (people in general)
folk (பொது மக்கள்) folk (आम लोग) - infantry (foot-soldiers)
infantry (காலாட்படை வீரர்கள்) infantry (पैदल सेना) - cavalry (soldiers on horseback or armored vehicles)
cavalry (குதிரைப்படை அல்லது கவச வாகனப் படை வீரர்கள்) cavalry (घुड़सवार या बख्तरबंद सेना)
Morphological Rules for This Class
Two vital rules govern these nouns:
- Never add -s or -es: Because these words are already inherently plural, attaching an -s is an error. Words such as cattles, polices, poultries, or vermins do not exist in standard English.
- They cannot take the indefinite article ‘a’ or ‘an’: You can never say a cattle or a police. When you need to refer to an individual member, you must use a modifying counter:
இவை ‘a’ அல்லது ‘an’ என்ற நிச்சயமற்ற சுட்டுச்சொல்லை (Indefinite Article) ஏற்க முடியாது: a cattle அல்லது a police என்று ஒருபோதும் கூற முடியாது. ஒரு தனிப்பட்ட உறுப்பினரைக் குறிப்பிட விரும்பும்போது, ஒரு பிரத்யேக எண்ணும் சொல்லைப் (Modifying Counter) பயன்படுத்த வேண்டும்: ये Indefinite Article ‘a’ या ‘an’ नहीं ले सकते: आप कभी भी a cattle या a police नहीं कह सकते। जब आपको किसी एक सदस्य का उल्लेख करना हो, तो आपको एक संशोधक गणक (Modifying Counter) का उपयोग करना होगा: - For cattle: one head of cattle or twenty head of cattle
cattle என்பதற்கு: one head of cattle அல்லது twenty head of cattle cattle के लिए: one head of cattle या twenty head of cattle - For police: a police officer, a policeman, or three police officers
police என்பதற்கு: a police officer, a policeman அல்லது three police officers police के लिए: a police officer, a policeman, या three police officers
- For cattle: one head of cattle or twenty head of cattle
- Incorrect: The farmers drove their cattles to the river.
தவறானது: The farmers drove their cattles to the river. अशुद्ध: The farmers drove their cattles to the river. - Correct: The farmers drove their cattle to the river.
சரியானது: The farmers drove their cattle to the river. शुद्ध: The farmers drove their cattle to the river. - Incorrect: A police arrested the thief outside the market.
தவறானது: A police arrested the thief outside the market. अशुद्ध: A police arrested the thief outside the market. - Correct: A police officer arrested the thief outside the market.
சரியானது: A police officer arrested the thief outside the market. शुद्ध: A police officer arrested the thief outside the market.
Nouns Plural in Form and Function (Plurale Tantum)
In grammatical terminology, nouns that exist exclusively in the plural form and possess no singular equivalent are known as plurale tantum (Latin for plural only). These nouns end in -s and fall into three logical categories:
1. Tools and Instruments with Two Connected Halves
These objects consist of two symmetrical, working parts joined at a pivot:
- scissors
scissors (கத்தரிக்கோல்) scissors (कैंची) - spectacles (eyeglasses)
spectacles (கண்ணாடி) spectacles (चश्मा) - glasses / goggles / sunglasses
glasses / goggles / sunglasses glasses / goggles / sunglasses - binoculars
binoculars (தொலைநோக்கி) binoculars (दूरबीन) - pliers
pliers (குறடு) pliers (पिलास) - tongs
tongs (இடுக்கி) tongs (चिमटा) - pincers
pincers (இடுக்கிக் குறடு) pincers (सँड़सी) - tweezers
tweezers (மயிர்க்கவடு / சிறிய இடுக்கி) tweezers (चिमटी) - scales (an instrument for weighing)
scales (எடை தராசு) scales (तौलने का तराजू)
2. Articles of Clothing with Two Legs
Garments designed with two separate leg sleeves are inherently plural:
- trousers
trousers trousers - pants
pants pants - jeans
jeans jeans - shorts
shorts shorts - pyjamas
pyjamas pyjamas - tights
tights tights
3. Miscellaneous Collective Plurals
These words denote accumulated assets, remnants, or traditional states:
- alms (charitable donations given to the poor)
alms (ஏழைகளுக்கு வழங்கப்படும் தர்மம் அல்லது தானம்) alms (गरीबों को दिया जाने वाला दान या भिक्षा) - credentials (documents proving qualifications)
credentials (தகுதிகளை நிரூபிக்கும் சான்றிதழ்கள்) credentials (योग्यता प्रमाणित करने वाले दस्तावेज) - surroundings (the environment around a place)

thanks (நன்றிகள்) thanks (धन्यवाद) - premises (a building and its surrounding property)
premises (ஒரு கட்டடமும் அதைச் சுற்றியுள்ள வளாகமும்) premises (भवन और उसका परिसर) - valuables (precious possessions)
valuables (விலைமதிப்பற்ற பொருட்கள்) valuables (कीमती सामान) - belongings (personal property)
belongings (சொந்த உடைமைகள்) belongings (निजी संपत्ति या सामान) - savings (money set aside)
savings (சேமிப்புத் தொகை) savings (बचत) - earnings (wages or profit)
earnings (ஊதியம் அல்லது வருமானம்) earnings (कमाई या मजदूरी)
The Counting Mechanism: “A Pair Of”
You cannot create a singular noun by stripping off the -s from these words. Forms such as a scissor, a trouser, a spectacle, or a jean are completely incorrect.
To refer to a single unit of a two-part object, you must use the quantifier phrase a pair of:
- Incorrect: I need to buy a new trouser for the interview.
தவறானது: I need to buy a new trouser for the interview. अशुद्ध: I need to buy a new trouser for the interview. - Correct: I need to buy a new pair of trousers for the interview.
சரியானது: I need to buy a new pair of trousers for the interview. शुद्ध: I need to buy a new pair of trousers for the interview. - Incorrect: Give me that scissor on the desk.
தவறானது: Give me that scissor on the desk. अशुद्ध: Give me that scissor on the desk. - Correct: Give me that pair of scissors on the desk.
சரியானது: Give me that pair of scissors on the desk. शुद्ध: Give me that pair of scissors on the desk.
Nouns with Identical Singular and Plural Forms
Certain nouns maintain an identical spelling and pronunciation regardless of whether you refer to a single item or dozens of them. They do not take -s or -es in the plural:
- sheep (one sheep, ten sheep; never sheeps)
sheep (ஒரு செம்மறியாடு, பத்து செம்மறியாடுகள்; ஒருபோதும் sheeps அல்ல) sheep (one sheep, ten sheep; कभी sheeps नहीं) - deer (one deer, six deer; never deers)
deer (ஒரு மான், ஆறு மான்கள்; ஒருபோதும் deers அல்ல) deer (one deer, six deer; कभी deers नहीं) - aircraft (one aircraft, four aircraft; never aircrafts)
aircraft (ஒரு விமானம், நான்கு விமானங்கள்; ஒருபோதும் aircrafts அல்ல) aircraft (one aircraft, four aircraft; कभी aircrafts नहीं) - spacecraft (one spacecraft, two spacecraft)
spacecraft (ஒரு விண்கலம், இரண்டு விண்கலங்கள்) spacecraft (one spacecraft, two spacecraft) - hovercraft
hovercraft hovercraft - series (one television series, several television series)
series (ஒரு தொலைக்காட்சித் தொடர், பல தொலைக்காட்சித் தொடர்கள்) series (one television series, several television series) - species (one plant species, numerous species)
species (ஒரு தாவர இனம், எண்ணற்ற இனங்கள்) species (one plant species, numerous species) - offspring (one offspring, many offspring; never offsprings)
offspring (ஒரு சந்ததி/வாரிசு, பல சந்ததிகள்; ஒருபோதும் offsprings அல்ல) offspring (one offspring, many offspring; कभी offsprings नहीं) - salmon, trout, cod (names of specific fish)
salmon, trout, cod (குறிப்பிட்ட மீன் வகைகளின் பெயர்கள்) salmon, trout, cod (विशेष प्रकार की मछलियों के नाम)
The Case of Fish versus Fishes
The standard plural of the word fish is simply fish:
- He caught five fish in the lake.
He caught five fish in the lake. (அவர் ஏரியில் ஐந்து மீன்களைப் பிடித்தார்) He caught five fish in the lake.
The form fishes exists in English, but only with a specialized, scientific meaning: it refers to different biological species or varieties of fish swimming together in an ecosystem. For ordinary counting of individual fish, fish remains the only correct form.
Semantic Divergence: Nouns That Change Meaning in the Plural
In several instances, adding an -s to a noun does not merely make it plural; it alters the core meaning of the word entirely. The singular form usually represents an uncountable substance, an abstract virtue, or a general concept, while the plural form represents a distinct concrete object, legal term, or institutional entity:
| Singular Form | Singular Meaning | Plural Form | Plural Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| wood | Timber, the substance of trees | woods | A forest or woodland area |
| water | The liquid substance | waters | A sea, ocean, or territorial marine boundary |
| good | Moral benefit or virtue | goods | Merchandise, freight, or commercial property |
| air | The atmospheric gas we breathe | airs | Arrogant, boastful behavior (putting on airs) |
| iron | The chemical metallic element | irons | Chains, shackles, or fetters |
| force | Physical strength or energy | forces | Troops, armed military, or police personnel |
| quarter | One-fourth of a whole (25%) | quarters | Living accommodations, residential lodgings |
| sand | Granular mineral particles | sands | A desert or a vast stretch of seashore |
| custom | A traditional social habit | customs | Taxes and duties on imported international goods |
| return | The act of coming back | returns | Financial profits, yields, or formal tax filings |
| respect | Regard, honor, or esteem | respects | Polite greetings or formal compliments |
| content | A state of peaceful satisfaction | contents | The items held inside a box, vessel, or book |
| physic | An archaic term for medicine | physics | The physical science of matter and energy |
| work | Physical or mental labor | works | A manufacturing factory, or literary creations |
Understanding these distinctions prevents severe confusion in written communication:
- The carpenter carried three planks of wood. (Material)
The carpenter carried three planks of wood. (பொருள் - மரம் / மரப்பலகை) The carpenter carried three planks of wood. (लकड़ी/पदार्थ) - The hermit lived deep inside the woods. (Forest)
The hermit lived deep inside the woods. (காடு) The hermit lived deep inside the woods. (जंगल) - The merchant imported electronic goods from abroad. (Merchandise)
The merchant imported electronic goods from abroad. (சரக்குகள் / வணிகப் பொருட்கள்) The merchant imported electronic goods from abroad. (व्यापारिक माल) - The soldiers guarded the high-security quarters. (Living lodgings)
The soldiers guarded the high-security quarters. (குடியிருப்புகள் / தங்குமிடம்) The soldiers guarded the high-security quarters. (आवास/रहने का स्थान)
Key Takeaways
- Regular nouns form plurals by attaching -s, adding -es after sibilant sounds (-s, -ss, -sh, -ch, -x, -z), or alternating -y to -ies when preceded by a consonant.
- Nouns ending in -f or -fe frequently shift to -ves, but invariant words such as chiefs, beliefs, roofs, and proofs take only -s.
- Internal vowel mutation creates irregular native plurals such as men, women, feet, teeth, mice, and geese, which are already complete and must never take an additional -s.
- Classical foreign loanwords preserve their original inflections, changing -us to -i, -um or -on to -a, and -is to -es.
பாரம்பரிய வேற்றுமொழிக் கடன்சொற்கள் தங்களின் அசல் உருபன்களைப் பாதுகாத்து, -us என்பதை -i ஆகவும், -um அல்லது -on என்பதை -a ஆகவும், -is என்பதை -es ஆகவும் மாற்றுகின்றன. शास्त्रीय विदेशी शब्द अपने मूल रूपों को बनाए रखते हैं, जिनमें -us बदलकर -i, -um या -on बदलकर -a, और -is बदलकर -es हो जाता है। - Compound nouns form their plurals by attaching the plural suffix strictly to the principal head noun, producing forms such as commanders-in-chief and passers-by.
- Invariant noun categories include words singular in form but plural in function (cattle, police), two-part tools and garments requiring the counter phrase a pair of (scissors, trousers), and nouns that remain identical in both numbers (sheep, aircraft).
