Types of Sentences
Master the classification of English sentences by function and structure, including declarative, interrogative, imperative, simple, and complex patterns.
Understanding Sentence Classification
In the previous lesson, we discovered that every sentence is built from clauses, and that clauses contain a subject and a predicate. A clause can either stand alone as a complete thought or depend on another clause to complete its meaning.
When we assemble these clauses into full sentences, we can analyze them from two distinct viewpoints. The first viewpoint is functional: what job does the sentence perform for the speaker or writer? The second viewpoint is structural: how many clauses are joined together, and how are they connected?
Mastering both classifications provides you with a blueprint for English syntax. Instead of seeing a long string of words, you will immediately recognize the functional intent and the structural framework of any sentence you read.
Analogy · Architectural Blueprint of Sentences Expand analogy
Think of a building in your hometown. From the outside, you classify it by its purpose: a residence, a shop, a hospital, or a place of worship. On the inside, an engineer classifies it by its structural frame: a single room, a joined duplex, or a multi-story complex. Sentences operate in the exact same way. Functional classification tells you the purpose of the message, while structural classification reveals the engineering of its clauses.
Classification by Purpose and Function
When we speak or write, we choose our words to accomplish a specific goal. We might state a simple fact, ask for missing information, give a command, express strong feelings, or offer a blessing.
In English grammar, these communicative intents divide sentences into five functional categories: Declarative, Interrogative, Imperative, Exclamatory, and Optative.
Declarative or Assertive Sentences
A declarative sentence, also called an assertive sentence, makes a statement, asserts a fact, or expresses an opinion. It simply declares something and always ends with a full stop.
The word order of a declarative sentence follows the standard Subject-Verb-Object pattern. Declarative sentences can be either affirmative (positive) or negative:
-
Affirmative: The supervisor approved the revised proposal yesterday.
உடன்பாடு: மேற்பார்வையாளர் திருத்தப்பட்ட திட்டத்தை நேற்று அங்கீகரித்தார். सकारात्मक: सुपरवाइज़र ने कल संशोधित प्रस्ताव को मंज़ूरी दी। -
Affirmative: Solar power provides a sustainable source of energy.
உடன்பாடு: சூரிய சக்தி ஒரு நிலையான ஆற்றல் மூலத்தை வழங்குகிறது. सकारात्मक: सौर ऊर्जा, ऊर्जा का एक स्थायी स्रोत प्रदान करती है। -
Negative: The candidate did not upload the required documents.
எதிர்மறை: விண்ணப்பதாரர் தேவையான ஆவணங்களைப் பதிவேற்றவில்லை. नकारात्मक: उम्मीदवार ने आवश्यक दस्तावेज़ अपलोड नहीं किए। -
Negative: Water does not boil at low temperatures without sufficient pressure.
எதிர்மறை: போதுமான அழுத்தம் இல்லாமல் குறைந்த வெப்பநிலையில் தண்ணீர் கொதிக்காது. नकारात्मक: पर्याप्त दबाव के बिना कम तापमान पर पानी नहीं उबलता।
Because declarative sentences deliver information clearly and directly, they make up the vast majority of written English.
Interrogative Sentences
An interrogative sentence asks a direct question to obtain information, clarify a doubt, or verify a fact. It always ends with a question mark.
Unlike declarative statements, English direct questions require a structural shift known as subject-auxiliary inversion. In this structure, the auxiliary verb moves before the subject:
1. Yes or No Questions
These questions seek a simple affirmation or denial. They always begin with an auxiliary verb such as is, are, was, were, do, does, did, has, have, had, can, or will.
-
Structure: Auxiliary Verb + Subject + Main Verb + Object or Complement?
அமைப்பு: Auxiliary Verb + Subject + முதன்மை வினைச்சொல் (Main Verb) + செயப்படுபொருள் (Object) அல்லது நிரப்பி (Complement)? संरचना: Auxiliary Verb + Subject + Main Verb + Object या Complement? -
Example: Is the train running on schedule?
எடுத்துக்காட்டு: ரயில் சரியான நேரப்படி இயங்குகிறதா? उदाहरण: क्या ट्रेन समय पर चल रही है? -
Example: Did the clerk dispatch the official letter?
எடுத்துக்காட்டு: எழுத்தர் அதிகாரப்பூர்வக் கடிதத்தை அனுப்பினாரா? उदाहरण: क्या क्लर्क ने आधिकारिक पत्र भेज दिया? -
Example: Have you verified the account details?
எடுத்துக்காட்டு: கணக்கு விவரங்களை நீங்கள் சரிபார்த்துவிட்டீர்களா? उदाहरण: क्या आपने खाते के विवरण की पुष्टि कर ली है?
2. Wh- Questions
These questions begin with interrogative question words such as who, what, where, when, why, which, whose, whom, or how. They seek specific details rather than a simple yes or no.
-
Structure: Interrogative Word + Auxiliary Verb + Subject + Main Verb + Complement?
அமைப்பு: Interrogative Word + Auxiliary Verb + Subject + Main Verb + Complement? संरचना: Interrogative Word + Auxiliary Verb + Subject + Main Verb + Complement? -
Example: Why did the committee reject the initial plan?
எடுத்துக்காட்டு: ஆரம்பத் திட்டத்தை ஏன் குழு நிராகரித்தது? उदाहरण: समिति ने प्रारंभिक योजना को क्यों अस्वीकार कर दिया? -
Example: Where does the director conduct the monthly meeting?
எடுத்துக்காட்டு: இயக்குநர் மாதாந்திரக் கூட்டத்தை எங்கு நடத்துகிறார்? उदाहरण: निदेशक मासिक बैठक कहाँ आयोजित करते हैं? -
Example: How can the team resolve this technical issue?
எடுத்துக்காட்டு: குழு இந்தத் தொழில்நுட்பப் பிரச்சினையை எவ்வாறு தீர்க்க முடியும்? उदाहरण: टीम इस तकनीकी समस्या को कैसे हल कर सकती है?
Notice that both types of direct questions place an auxiliary verb before the subject. This differs fundamentally from Indian languages:
-
Hindi: A question often simply adds the word क्या (kya) at the beginning while leaving the rest of the sentence unchanged: राम बाजार जाता है। (Ram market goes.) becomes क्या राम बाजार जाता है? (Does Ram go to the market?).
ஹிந்தி: வாக்கிய அமைப்பில் எந்த மாற்றமும் செய்யாமல், தொடக்கத்தில் क्या (kya) என்ற சொல்லைச் சேர்ப்பதன் மூலம் பெரும்பாலும் வினா உருவாக்கப்படுகிறது: राम बाजार जाता है। (Ram market goes.) என்பது क्या राम बाजार जाता है? (Does Ram go to the market?) என்று மாறுகிறது. हिंदी: एक प्रश्न में अक्सर बाकी वाक्य को बदले बिना शुरुआत में सिर्फ क्या (kya) शब्द जोड़ दिया जाता है: राम बाजार जाता है। से क्या राम बाजार जाता है? बन जाता है। -
Tamil: A question typically attaches an interrogative suffix like -ஆ (-aa) to the verb without shifting word positions: ராம் சந்தைக்கு போகிறான். (Ram sandhaikku pogiraan.) becomes ராம் சந்தைக்கு போகிறானா? (Ram sandhaikku pogiraanaa?).
In formal English, you cannot simply say “Ram goes to the market?” to ask a standard direct question. You must use the auxiliary verb before the subject: “Does Ram go to the market?”.
Imperative Sentences
An imperative sentence issues a command, gives an instruction, offers advice, or makes a polite request. It directs the listener or reader to perform an action.
The defining characteristic of an imperative sentence is its hidden subject. The subject is always the second person pronoun you, but it is omitted from the sentence. The sentence begins directly with the base form of the verb:
-
Command: Submit the finalized financial report by noon.
ஆணை: இறுதி செய்யப்பட்ட நிதி அறிக்கையை நண்பகலுக்குள் சமர்ப்பிக்கவும். आदेश: दोपहर तक अंतिम वित्तीय रिपोर्ट जमा करें। -
Request: Please verify the branch transaction code.
வேண்டுகோள்: கிளைப் பரிவர்த்தனைக் குறியீட்டைத் தயவுசெய்து சரிபார்க்கவும். अनुरोध: कृपया शाखा लेनदेन कोड सत्यापित करें। -
Instruction: Keep the medicine in a cool and dry place.
வழிகாட்டல்: மருந்தை ஒரு குளிர்ந்த மற்றும் உலர்ந்த இடத்தில் வைக்கவும். निर्देश: दवा को ठंडी और सूखी जगह पर रखें। -
Negative Command: Do not share your banking password with anyone.
எதிர்மறை ஆணை: உங்கள் வங்கி கடவுச்சொல்லை யாரிடமும் பகிர வேண்டாம். नकारात्मक आदेश: अपना बैंकिंग पासवर्ड किसी के साथ साझा न करें।
In Indian languages, imperative sentences often change their verb endings depending on politeness or age:
-
Hindi: You might say आप बैठिए (Aap baithiye) for a polite request and बैठो (Baitho) for a direct instruction.
ஹிந்தி: பணிவான வேண்டுகோளுக்கு आप बैठिए (Aap baithiye) என்றும், நேரடி வழிகாட்டலுக்கு बैठो (Baitho) என்றும் கூறலாம். हिंदी: आप विनम्र अनुरोध के लिए आप बैठिए (Aap baithiye) और सीधे निर्देश के लिए बैठो (Baitho) कह सकते हैं। -
Tamil: You might say வாருங்கள் (Vaarungal) to show respect and வா (Vaa) to a younger person.
தமிழ்: மரியாதை வெளிப்படுத்த வாருங்கள் என்றும், இளையவரிடம் வா என்றும் கூறலாம். तमिल: आप सम्मान दिखाने के लिए வாருங்கள் (Vaarungal) और किसी छोटे व्यक्ति के लिए வா (Vaa) कह सकते हैं।
In English, however, the base verb remains unchanged whether you speak to an elder, a friend, or a colleague. Politeness is conveyed by adding courteous words such as please or kindly, rather than altering the verb itself.
Most imperative sentences end with a full stop. If the command conveys extreme urgency or danger, it ends with an exclamation mark:
- Urgent Command: Stop the engine immediately!
அவசர ஆணை: உடனடியாக இயந்திரத்தை நிறுத்துங்கள்! तात्कालिक आदेश: इंजन को तुरंत बंद करें!
Exclamatory Sentences
An exclamatory sentence expresses sudden, intense emotion such as astonishment, grief, admiration, or delight. It always ends with an exclamation mark.
While an assertive sentence states a fact neutrally, an exclamatory sentence conveys the speaker’s emotional reaction to that fact. In English, exclamatory sentences commonly use two distinctive patterns beginning with What or How:
1. The “What” Pattern
We use What when the exclamatory focus involves a noun:
-
Structure: What + (a or an) + Adjective + Noun + Subject + Verb!
அமைப்பு: What + (a அல்லது an) + Adjective + Noun + Subject + Verb! संरचना: What + (a या an) + Adjective + Noun + Subject + Verb! -
Example: What a remarkable speech the chief guest delivered!
எடுத்துக்காட்டு: சிறப்பு விருந்தினர் என்ன ஒரு சிறப்பான உரையை ஆற்றினார்! उदाहरण: मुख्य अतिथि ने कितना शानदार भाषण दिया! -
Example: What an incredible opportunity this project offers!
எடுத்துக்காட்டு: இந்தத் திட்டம் என்ன ஓர் அற்புதமான வாய்ப்பை வழங்குகிறது! उदाहरण: यह परियोजना कितना अविश्वसनीय अवसर प्रदान करती है!
2. The “How” Pattern
We use How when the exclamatory focus is an adjective or an adverb:
-
Structure: How + Adjective or Adverb + Subject + Verb!
அமைப்பு: How + Adjective அல்லது Adverb + Subject + Verb! संरचना: How + Adjective या Adverb + Subject + Verb! -
Example: How gracefully the classical dancer moved across the stage!
எடுத்துக்காட்டு: பாரம்பரிய நடனக் கலைஞர் மேடையில் எவ்வளவு நளினமாக அசைந்தார்! उदाहरण: मंच पर शास्त्रीय नृत्यांगना कितनी शालीनता से घूमीं! -
Example: How scenic the Himalayan valley looks at sunrise!
எடுத்துக்காட்டு: சூரிய உதயத்தின் போது இமயமலைப் பள்ளத்தாக்கு எவ்வளவு அழகாகக் காட்சியளிக்கிறது! उदाहरण: सूर्योदय के समय हिमालय की घाटी कितनी सुंदर दिखती है!
Notice the word order in these patterns. The adjective or noun is pulled to the very front after What or How, while the subject and verb are placed at the end of the clause.
Optative Sentences
An optative sentence expresses a wish, desire, hope, prayer, or blessing. In traditional English grammar, it is classified as a distinct functional category because it reflects the optative mood rather than a statement of fact.
Optative sentences typically begin with the modal auxiliary verb May, followed by the subject and the base form of the main verb (V1). They usually conclude with an exclamation mark:
-
Structure: May + Subject + Base Verb (V1) + …!
அமைப்பு: May + Subject + Base Verb (V1) + …! संरचना: May + Subject + Base Verb (V1) + …! -
Blessing: May God protect your family and grant you prosperity!
ஆசி: கடவுள் உங்கள் குடும்பத்தைப் பாதுகாத்து உங்களுக்குச் செழிப்பை வழங்குவாராக! आशीर्वाद: ईश्वर आपके परिवार की रक्षा करे और आपको समृद्धि प्रदान करे! -
Wish: May you achieve your highest aspirations in life!
விருப்பம்: வாழ்க்கையில் உங்கள் உயர்ந்த லட்சியங்களை நீங்கள் அடைவீர்களாக! शुभकामना: आप जीवन में अपनी सर्वोच्च आकांक्षाओं को प्राप्त करें! -
Prayer: May peace prevail across the entire country!
பிரார்த்தனை: நாடு முழுவதும் அமைதி நிலவுவதாக! प्रार्थना: पूरे देश में शांति बनी रहे!
In some classic expressions, the word May is omitted, but the base verb remains in place:
-
Example: Long live the Republic!
எடுத்துக்காட்டு: குடியரசு நீண்ட காலம் வாழ்க! उदाहरण: गणतंत्र चिरंजीवी हो! -
Example: God save the nation!
எடுத்துக்காட்டு: கடவுள் தேசத்தைக் காப்பாற்றுவாராக! उदाहरण: ईश्वर राष्ट्र की रक्षा करे!
Both Hindi and Tamil have direct equivalents for optative expressions:
-
Hindi: Wishes and blessings routinely use optative verb forms: भगवान आपका भला करे! (Bhagwan aapka bhala kare!).
ஹிந்தி: விருப்பங்களும் ஆசிகளும் வழக்கமாக விழைவு வினை வடிவங்களைப் பயன்படுத்துகின்றன: भगवान आपका भला करे! (Bhagwan aapka bhala kare!). हिंदी: शुभकामनाओं और आशीर्वादों में नियमित रूप से इच्छासूचक क्रिया रूपों का उपयोग किया जाता है: भगवान आपका भला करे! (Bhagwan aapka bhala kare!)। -
Tamil: Wishes similarly rely on dedicated optative verb structures: நீண்ட காலம் வாழ்க! (Neenda kaalam vaazhga!) or கடவுள் உங்களை ஆசீர்வதிப்பாராக! (Kadavul ungalai aaseervadhippaaraaga!).
தமிழ்: விருப்பங்கள் இதேபோல் பிரத்யேகமான விழைவு வினை அமைப்புகளைச் சார்ந்துள்ளன: நீண்ட காலம் வாழ்க! அல்லது **கடவுள் உங்களை ஆசீர்வதிப்பாராக! तमिल: शुभकामनाएँ इसी तरह समर्पित इच्छासूचक क्रिया संरचनाओं पर निर्भर करती हैं: நீண்ட காலம் வாழ்க! (Neenda kaalam vaazhga!) या கடவுள் உங்களை ஆசீர்வதிப்பாராக! (Kadavul ungalai aaseervadhippaaraaga!)।
Functional Comparison of Sentence Types
To clearly distinguish these functional types, observe how the same basic topic transforms across each category:
| Sentence Type | Primary Purpose | Structural Feature | Illustrated Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Declarative | States a fact or opinion | Subject precedes verb | The officer inspected the railway track. |
| Interrogative | Asks a question | Auxiliary precedes subject | Did the officer inspect the railway track? |
| Imperative | Gives command or request | Subject “you” is omitted | Inspect the railway track immediately. |
| Exclamatory | Expresses strong feeling | Begins with What or How | How thoroughly the officer inspected the track! |
| Optative | Expresses a wish or prayer | Begins with May + base verb | May the officer complete the inspection safely! |
Classification by Sentence Structure
While functional classification evaluates what a sentence does, structural classification analyzes how a sentence is built.
In English, the structure of any sentence is determined by the number and type of clauses it contains. Recall from the previous lesson that an independent clause expresses a complete thought and can stand alone as a full sentence, whereas a dependent clause relies on an independent clause to complete its meaning.
Based on how these clauses are assembled, English sentences fall into four structural categories: Simple, Compound, Complex, and Compound-Complex.
Simple Sentences
A simple sentence contains exactly one independent clause and no dependent clauses. It expresses a single complete thought with at least one subject and one predicate.
A simple sentence is not necessarily short. It can contain modifying phrases, prepositional phrases, and compound elements while remaining strictly a simple sentence:
-
Single Subject and Single Predicate: The express train arrived at the central station on time.
ஒற்றை எழுவாய் மற்றும் ஒற்றைப் பயனிலை: விரைவு ரயில் மத்திய நிலையத்திற்குச் சரியான நேரத்தில் வந்து சேர்ந்தது. एकल Subject और एकल Predicate: एक्सप्रेस ट्रेन समय पर सेंट्रल स्टेशन पहुंची। -
Compound Subject with Single Predicate: Rohit and his sister visited the national museum yesterday.
கூட்டு எழுவாய் மற்றும் ஒற்றைப் பயனிலை: ரோஹித்தும் அவனது சகோதரியும் நேற்று தேசிய அருங்காட்சியகத்தைப் பார்வையிட்டனர். एकल Predicate के साथ संयुक्त Subject: रोहित और उसकी बहन ने कल राष्ट्रीय संग्रहालय का दौरा किया। -
Single Subject with Compound Predicate: The officer reviewed the files and approved the scholarship.
ஒற்றை எழுவாய் மற்றும் கூட்டுப் பயனிலை: அதிகாரி கோப்புகளை ஆய்வு செய்து கல்வி உதவித்தொகையை அங்கீகரித்தார். संयुक्त Predicate के साथ एकल Subject: अधिकारी ने फाइलों की समीक्षा की और छात्रवृत्ति को मंजूरी दी। -
Compound Subject with Compound Predicate: Farmers and traders gathered at the market and negotiated fair prices.
கூட்டு எழுவாய் மற்றும் கூட்டுப் பயனிலை: விவசாயிகளும் வணிகர்களும் சந்தையில் கூடி நியாயமான விலைகளைப் பற்றிப் பேசினர். संयुक्त Predicate के साथ संयुक्त Subject: किसान और व्यापारी बाजार में एकत्र हुए और उचित मूल्य तय किए।
In all four examples, there is only one independent grammatical clause. No separate clauses are joined together, which keeps each sentence classified as a simple sentence.
Compound Sentences
A compound sentence contains two or more independent clauses joined together, with no dependent clauses. Each clause inside a compound sentence could stand completely on its own as an independent sentence.
To join these independent clauses properly, English uses three standard methods:
1. Coordinating Conjunctions (FANBOYS)
Two independent clauses can be joined by a comma followed by one of the seven coordinating conjunctions: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So.
-
Formula: Independent Clause + , + Coordinating Conjunction + Independent Clause
சூத்திரம்: Independent Clause + , + Coordinating Conjunction + Independent Clause सूत्र: Independent Clause + , + Coordinating Conjunction + Independent Clause -
Addition (And): The monsoon arrived early, and the farmers began sowing their seeds.
கூடுதல் (And): பருவமழை முன்கூட்டியே வந்தது, மேலும் விவசாயிகள் தங்கள் விதைகளை விதைக்கத் தொடங்கினர். जोड़ (And): मानसून जल्दी आ गया, और किसानों ने अपने बीज बोना शुरू कर दिया। -
Contrast (But): The candidate prepared thoroughly, but the examination proved unexpectedly challenging.
முரண்பாடு (But): விண்ணப்பதாரர் தீவிரமாகத் தயாரானார், ஆனால் தேர்வு எதிர்பாராதவிதமாக சவாலானதாக அமைந்தது. विरोध (But): उम्मीदवार ने पूरी तैयारी की थी, लेकिन परीक्षा अप्रत्याशित रूप से चुनौतीपूर्ण साबित हुई। -
Cause (For): The villagers stored drinking water, for the summer heat was intensifying rapidly.
காரணம் (For): கிராம மக்கள் குடிநீரைச் சேமித்து வைத்தனர், ஏனெனில் கோடை வெயில் வேகமாக அதிகரித்து வந்தது. कारण (For): ग्रामीणों ने पीने का पानी जमा कर लिया, क्योंकि गर्मी तेजी से बढ़ रही थी। -
Negative Choice (Nor): He did not attend the scheduled meeting, nor did he send an explanation.
எதிர்மறைத் தேர்வு (Nor): அவர் திட்டமிடப்பட்ட கூட்டத்தில் கலந்து கொள்ளவில்லை, அதற்கான விளக்கத்தையும் அவர் அனுப்பவில்லை. नकारात्मक विकल्प (Nor): वह निर्धारित बैठक में शामिल नहीं हुआ, और न ही उसने कोई स्पष्टीकरण भेजा। -
Alternative (Or): You must submit the original certificate, or the office will reject your form.
மாற்று (Or): நீங்கள் அசல் சான்றிதழைச் சமர்ப்பிக்க வேண்டும், இல்லையெனில் அலுவலகம் உங்கள் படிவத்தை நிராகரித்துவிடும். विकल्प (Or): आपको मूल प्रमाण पत्र जमा करना होगा, अन्यथा कार्यालय आपके फॉर्म को अस्वीकार कर देगा। -
Concession (Yet): The salary was modest, yet he found immense satisfaction in teaching.
இணக்கம்/முரண் ஏற்பு (Yet): ஊதியம் குறைவாகவே இருந்தது, ஆயினும் கற்பிப்பதில் அவர் அளப்பரிய திருப்தியைக் கண்டார். सहमति/विरोधाभास (Yet): वेतन मामूली था, फिर भी उसे अध्यापन में अत्यधिक संतुष्टि मिली। -
Result (So): The flight was delayed by heavy fog, so the passengers waited in the lounge.
விளைவு (So): கடும் பனிமூட்டம் காரணமாக விமானம் தாமதமானது, எனவே பயணிகள் காத்திருப்பு அறையில் காத்திருந்தனர். परिणाम (So): घने कोहरे के कारण उड़ान में देरी हुई, इसलिए यात्रियों ने लाउंज में इंतजार किया।
2. Semicolons
When two independent clauses share a very close logical connection, they can be joined directly by a semicolon without any coordinating conjunction:
-
Formula: Independent Clause + ; + Independent Clause
சூத்திரம்: Independent Clause + ; + Independent Clause सूत्र: Independent Clause + ; + Independent Clause -
Example: The bell rang at five o’clock; the staff packed their bags and headed home.
எடுத்துக்காட்டு: ஐந்து மணிக்கு மணி ஒலித்தது; ஊழியர்கள் தங்கள் பைகளை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு வீட்டிற்குப் புறப்பட்டனர். उदाहरण: पाँच बजे घंटी बजी; कर्मचारियों ने अपना सामान समेटा और घर चले गए। -
Example: Silence settled over the courtroom; the judge began reading the verdict.
எடுத்துக்காட்டு: நீதிமன்ற அறையில் அமைதி நிலவியது; நீதிபதி தீர்ப்பை வாசிக்கத் தொடங்கினார். उदाहरण: अदालत कक्ष में सन्नाटा छा गया; न्यायाधीश ने फैसला पढ़ना शुरू किया।
3. Conjunctive Adverbs
Two independent clauses can also be connected using a transitional word or conjunctive adverb such as however, therefore, moreover, consequently, nevertheless, or furthermore. In this pattern, the conjunctive adverb is preceded by a semicolon and followed by a comma:
-
Formula: Independent Clause + ; + Conjunctive Adverb + , + Independent Clause
சூத்திரம்: Independent Clause + ; + Conjunctive Adverb + , + Independent Clause सूत्र: Independent Clause + ; + Conjunctive Adverb + , + Independent Clause -
Example: The committee recognized the urgency of the problem; however, the available funds were insufficient.
எடுத்துக்காட்டு: பிரச்சினையின் அவசரத்தை குழு உணர்ந்தது; இருப்பினும், கையிருப்பில் இருந்த நிதி போதுமானதாக இல்லை. उदाहरण: समिति ने समस्या की गंभीरता को पहचाना; हालाँकि, उपलब्ध धन अपर्याप्त था। -
Example: The company adopted modern digital workflows; consequently, productivity increased significantly.
எடுத்துக்காட்டு: நிறுவனம் நவீன டிஜிட்டல் பணிப்பாய்வுகளை ஏற்றுக்கொண்டது; இதன் விளைவாக, உற்பத்தித்திறன் கணிசமாக அதிகரித்தது. उदाहरण: कंपनी ने आधुनिक डिजिटल कार्यप्रणाली को अपनाया; परिणामस्वरूप, उत्पादकता में काफी वृद्धि हुई।
Common Structural Errors in Compound Sentences
When joining independent clauses, two structural mistakes frequently occur:
-
The Comma Splice: This error occurs when a writer joins two independent clauses using only a comma, without a coordinating conjunction.
Incorrect: The sun set behind the hills, the temperature dropped quickly.
தவறானது: The sun set behind the hills, the temperature dropped quickly. अशुद्ध: The sun set behind the hills, the temperature dropped quickly. -
Correct: The sun set behind the hills, and the temperature dropped quickly.
சரியானது: The sun set behind the hills, and the temperature dropped quickly. शुद्ध: The sun set behind the hills, and the temperature dropped quickly. -
Correct: The sun set behind the hills; the temperature dropped quickly.
சரியானது: The sun set behind the hills; the temperature dropped quickly. शुद्ध: The sun set behind the hills; the temperature dropped quickly.
-
-
The Fused or Run-On Sentence: This error occurs when two independent clauses are placed together with no punctuation or conjunction whatsoever.
இணைப்பில்லா வாக்கியப் பிழை (The Fused or Run-On Sentence): எந்தவொரு நிறுத்தற்குறியோ (Punctuation) அல்லது இணைப்புச் சொல்லோ இல்லாமல் இரண்டு Independent Clauses ஒன்றாக வைக்கப்படும் போது இந்தத் தவறு ஏற்படுகிறது. The Fused or Run-On Sentence: यह त्रुटि तब होती है जब दो independent clauses को बिना किसी विराम चिह्न या conjunction के एक साथ रख दिया जाता है। -
Incorrect: The alarm rang loudly the security guards rushed to the main gate.
தவறானது: The alarm rang loudly the security guards rushed to the main gate. अशुद्ध: The alarm rang loudly the security guards rushed to the main gate. -
Correct: The alarm rang loudly, so the security guards rushed to the main gate.
சரியானது: The alarm rang loudly, so the security guards rushed to the main gate. शुद्ध: The alarm rang loudly, so the security guards rushed to the main gate.

Complex Sentences
A complex sentence contains exactly one independent clause and at least one dependent clause. The independent clause serves as the grammatical backbone of the sentence, while the dependent clause provides supporting information such as time, reason, condition, or concession.
Dependent clauses begin with subordinating conjunctions (such as because, although, since, if, unless, while, when, after, before) or relative pronouns (such as who, which, that).
The placement of the dependent clause determines the punctuation of a complex sentence:
1. Dependent Clause at the Beginning
When a complex sentence opens with a dependent clause, a comma must separate it from the following independent clause:
-
Formula: Dependent Clause + , + Independent Clause
சூத்திரம்: Dependent Clause + , + Independent Clause सूत्र: Dependent Clause + , + Independent Clause -
Example: Although the team faced unexpected delays, they completed the construction on time.
எடுத்துக்காட்டு: குழு எதிர்பாராத தாமதங்களை எதிர்கொண்ட போதிலும், அவர்கள் கட்டுமானத்தைச் சரியான நேரத்தில் முடித்தனர். उदाहरण: यद्यपि टीम को अप्रत्याशित देरी का सामना करना पड़ा, फिर भी उन्होंने समय पर निर्माण पूरा कर लिया। -
Example: Because the monsoon was unusually heavy, the river overflowed its banks.
எடுத்துக்காட்டு: பருவமழை வழக்கத்திற்கு மாறாகக் கடுமையாக இருந்ததால், ஆற்றில் வெள்ளம் கரைபுரண்டு ஓடியது. उदाहरण: चूँकि मानसून असामान्य रूप से भारी था, इसलिए नदी किनारों से ऊपर बहने लगी। -
Example: If the applicant satisfies all eligibility criteria, the bank will sanction the loan.
எடுத்துக்காட்டு: விண்ணப்பதாரர் அனைத்துத் தகுதி வரம்புகளையும் பூர்த்தி செய்தால், வங்கி கடனை வழங்கும். उदाहरण: यदि आवेदक सभी पात्रता मानदंडों को पूरा करता है, तो बैंक ऋण स्वीकृत करेगा।
2. Dependent Clause at the End
When the independent clause comes first, no comma is generally required before the subordinating conjunction:
-
Formula: Independent Clause + Dependent Clause
சூத்திரம்: Independent Clause + Dependent Clause सूत्र: Independent Clause + Dependent Clause -
Example: The team completed the construction on time although they faced unexpected delays.
எடுத்துக்காட்டு: எதிர்பாராத தாமதங்களை எதிர்கொண்ட போதிலும் குழு கட்டுமானத்தைச் சரியான நேரத்தில் முடித்தது. उदाहरण: टीम ने समय पर निर्माण कार्य पूरा किया यद्यपि उन्हें अप्रत्याशित देरी का सामना करना पड़ा। -
Example: The river overflowed its banks because the monsoon was unusually heavy.
எடுத்துக்காட்டு: பருவமழை வழக்கத்திற்கு மாறாகக் கடுமையாக இருந்த காரணத்தால் ஆற்றில் வெள்ளம் கரைபுரண்டு ஓடியது. उदाहरण: नदी किनारों से ऊपर बहने लगी क्योंकि मानसून असामान्य रूप से भारी था। -
Example: The bank will sanction the loan if the applicant satisfies all eligibility criteria.
எடுத்துக்காட்டு: விண்ணப்பதாரர் அனைத்துத் தகுதி வரம்புகளையும் பூர்த்தி செய்யும் பட்சத்தில் வங்கி கடனை வழங்கும். उदाहरण: यदि आवेदक सभी पात्रता मानदंडों को पूरा करता है तो बैंक ऋण स्वीकृत करेगा।
Compound-Complex Sentences
A compound-complex sentence combines the structural principles of both compound and complex sentences. It contains at least two independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.
This structure allows a writer to express multiple complete thoughts while simultaneously adding background conditions, causes, or qualifications.
Observe how the different clauses function together in these examples:
-
Example 1: When the siren sounded, the technicians evacuated the plant, and the fire brigade arrived promptly.
எடுத்துக்காட்டு 1: சைரன் ஒலித்தபோது, தொழில்நுட்ப வல்லுநர்கள் ஆலையிலிருந்து வெளியேறினர், மேலும் தீயணைப்புப் படையினர் உடனடியாக வந்து சேர்ந்தனர். उदाहरण 1: जब सायरन बजा, तो तकनीशियनों ने संयंत्र खाली कर दिया, और दमकल दस्ता तुरंत पहुंच गया। - Dependent Clause: When the siren sounded
Dependent Clause: When the siren sounded Dependent Clause: When the siren sounded - Independent Clause 1: the technicians evacuated the plant
Independent Clause 1: the technicians evacuated the plant Independent Clause 1: the technicians evacuated the plant - Independent Clause 2: and the fire brigade arrived promptly
Independent Clause 2: and the fire brigade arrived promptly Independent Clause 2: and the fire brigade arrived promptly
- Dependent Clause: When the siren sounded

Structural Comparison of Sentence Types
To compare all four structural types clearly, examine how clauses are configured across each category:
| Sentence Type | Independent Clauses | Dependent Clauses | Joining Elements | Illustrated Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Simple | Exactly 1 | 0 | None (phrases only) | The train departed from the platform before sunrise. |
| Compound | 2 or more | 0 | FANBOYS, semicolon, or conjunctive adverb | The train departed on time, and the passengers settled into their berths. |
| Complex | Exactly 1 | 1 or more | Subordinating conjunction or relative pronoun | The train departed on time because the railway signal cleared promptly. |
| Compound-Complex | 2 or more | 1 or more | Coordinating conjunction plus subordinating marker | When the signal cleared, the train departed on time, and the journey began smoothly. |
Structural Word Order and Syntactical Traps
Mastering sentence structures requires paying close attention to word order and connector placement. When constructing sentences, three critical structural traps frequently create grammatical errors.
1. The Indirect Question Inversion Trap
In direct questions, as we observed earlier, English requires subject-auxiliary inversion. The auxiliary verb moves before the subject:
-
Direct Question: Where is the railway ticket counter?
நேரடி வினா: ரயில் பயணச்சீட்டு வழங்கும் கவுண்டர் எங்குள்ளது? प्रत्यक्ष प्रश्न: रेलवे टिकट काउंटर कहाँ है? -
Direct Question: Why did the officer cancel the permit?
நேரடி வினா: அதிகாரி ஏன் அனுமதியை ரத்து செய்தார்? प्रत्यक्ष प्रश्न: अधिकारी ने परमिट क्यों रद्द कर दिया?
However, when a question is embedded inside a larger sentence as a dependent clause, it is no longer a direct question. In this embedded position, inversion must not occur. The clause must return to the standard declarative word order: Subject + Verb.
Many writers mistakenly keep the auxiliary verb before the subject, which creates a serious syntactical error:
-
Incorrect: Could you please explain where is the railway ticket counter?
தவறானது: Could you please explain where is the railway ticket counter? अशुद्ध: Could you please explain where is the railway ticket counter? -
Correct: Could you please explain where the railway ticket counter is?
சரியானது: Could you please explain where the railway ticket counter is? शुद्ध: Could you please explain where the railway ticket counter is? -
Incorrect: The manager inquired why did the officer cancel the permit.
தவறானது: The manager inquired why did the officer cancel the permit. अशुद्ध: The manager inquired why did the officer cancel the permit. -
Correct: The manager inquired why the officer cancelled the permit.
சரியானது: The manager inquired why the officer cancelled the permit. शुद्ध: The manager inquired why the officer cancelled the permit.
Notice that in the second corrected sentence, when the auxiliary did is removed, the verb cancel changes into its past tense form cancelled. While detailed rules for reported speech will be explored in a future chapter, remember this foundational rule: an embedded question clause never takes subject-auxiliary inversion.
2. Negative Adverbial Inversion Traps
In standard English sentences, the subject comes before the verb. However, when a sentence begins with a negative or restrictive adverbial expression, English requires subject-auxiliary inversion for emphasis.
If you begin a sentence with words like hardly, scarcely, seldom, rarely, or no sooner, the auxiliary verb must precede the subject:
-
Standard Order: He had hardly reached the platform when the train steamed away.
நிலையான வரிசை: He had hardly reached the platform when the train steamed away. मानक क्रम: वह मुश्किल से प्लेटफॉर्म पर पहुंचा ही था कि ट्रेन चल दी। -
Inverted Order: Hardly had he reached the platform when the train steamed away.
இடமாற்ற வரிசை: Hardly had he reached the platform when the train steamed away. व्युत्क्रम क्रम: वह मुश्किल से प्लेटफॉर्म पर पहुंचा ही था कि ट्रेन चल दी। -
Standard Order: The minister seldom visits the rural hospital.
நிலையான வரிசை: The minister seldom visits the rural hospital. मानक क्रम: मंत्री शायद ही कभी ग्रामीण अस्पताल का दौरा करते हैं। -
Inverted Order: Seldom does the minister visit the rural hospital.
இடமாற்ற வரிசை: Seldom does the minister visit the rural hospital. व्युत्क्रम क्रम: मंत्री शायद ही कभी ग्रामीण अस्पताल का दौरा करते हैं।
When using these inverted beginnings, two specific structural errors frequently arise:
A. Omission of Inversion
Failing to invert the subject and auxiliary verb after an introductory negative adverbial is grammatically incorrect:
-
Incorrect: Seldom the minister visits the rural hospital.
தவறானது: Seldom the minister visits the rural hospital. अशुद्ध: Seldom the minister visits the rural hospital. -
Correct: Seldom does the minister visit the rural hospital.
சரியானது: Seldom does the minister visit the rural hospital. शुद्ध: Seldom does the minister visit the rural hospital.
B. Correlative Connector Mismatch
Specific negative adverbials must pair strictly with their corresponding clause connectors:
-
Hardly, Scarcely, and Barely must pair with when (never with than).
Hardly, Scarcely, மற்றும் Barely ஆகியவை when என்பதோடு மட்டுமே இணைய வேண்டும் (ஒருபோதும் than உடன் இணையக்கூடாது). Hardly, Scarcely और Barely को अनिवार्य रूप से when के साथ जोड़ा जाना चाहिए (than के साथ कभी नहीं)। -
No sooner must pair with than (never with when or then).
No sooner என்பது than என்பதோடு மட்டுமே இணைய வேண்டும் (ஒருபோதும் when அல்லது then உடன் இணையக்கூடாது). No sooner को अनिवार्य रूप से than के साथ जोड़ा जाना चाहिए (when या then के साथ कभी नहीं)।
Observe these exact pairings:
-
Incorrect: Scarcely had the meeting started than the fire alarm went off.
தவறானது: Scarcely had the meeting started than the fire alarm went off. अशुद्ध: Scarcely had the meeting started than the fire alarm went off. -
Correct: Scarcely had the meeting started when the fire alarm went off.
சரியானது: Scarcely had the meeting started when the fire alarm went off. शुद्ध: Scarcely had the meeting started when the fire alarm went off. -
Incorrect: No sooner had the bell rung when the children rushed outside.
தவறானது: No sooner had the bell rung when the children rushed outside. अशुद्ध: No sooner had the bell rung when the children rushed outside. -
Correct: No sooner had the bell rung than the children rushed outside.
சரியானது: No sooner had the bell rung than the children rushed outside. शुद्ध: No sooner had the bell rung than the children rushed outside.
3. Misplaced and Redundant Clause Connectors
The third major structural trap involves the incorrect use of conjunctions to join clauses.
A. Redundant Double Conjunctions
In several Indian languages, it is common to use paired causal or concessive words in conversation. In English, however, using both a subordinating conjunction and a coordinating conjunction in the same sentence creates an ungrammatical double connection:
-
Incorrect: Although the applicant arrived late, but the interviewer evaluated his resume.
தவறானது: Although the applicant arrived late, but the interviewer evaluated his resume. अशुद्ध: Although the applicant arrived late, but the interviewer evaluated his resume. -
Correct: Although the applicant arrived late, the interviewer evaluated his resume.
சரியானது: Although the applicant arrived late, the interviewer evaluated his resume. शुद्ध: Although the applicant arrived late, the interviewer evaluated his resume. -
Incorrect: Because the monsoon failed this year, therefore the state declared a drought.
தவறானது: Because the monsoon failed this year, therefore the state declared a drought. अशुद्ध: Because the monsoon failed this year, therefore the state declared a drought. -
Correct: Because the monsoon failed this year, the state declared a drought.
சரியானது: Because the monsoon failed this year, the state declared a drought. शुद्ध: Because the monsoon failed this year, the state declared a drought.
A dependent clause already connects itself to the main clause through its subordinating conjunction (although or because). Adding but or therefore introduces an unnecessary second connector.
B. Misplaced Relative Clauses
A relative clause beginning with who, which, or that must be positioned immediately adjacent to the specific noun it describes. Placing descriptive clauses too far from their intended noun creates comical or misleading distortions:
-
Distorted: The inspector arrested the driver near the petrol pump who had jumped the traffic light.
பொருள் சிதைந்தது: The inspector arrested the driver near the petrol pump who had jumped the traffic light. विकृत: The inspector arrested the driver near the petrol pump who had jumped the traffic light. (This wording makes it sound like the petrol pump jumped the traffic light.)(இந்த வாக்கிய அமைப்பு பெட்ரோல் பங்க் தான் போக்குவரத்து சிக்னலை மீறியது போன்ற விசித்திரமான பொருளைத் தருகிறது.) (इस बनावट से ऐसा लगता है जैसे पेट्रोल पंप ने ट्रैफिक लाइट तोड़ी हो।) -
Clear and Correct: Near the petrol pump, the inspector arrested the driver who had jumped the traffic light.
தெளிவான மற்றும் சரியானது: Near the petrol pump, the inspector arrested the driver who had jumped the traffic light. स्पष्ट और शुद्ध: Near the petrol pump, the inspector arrested the driver who had jumped the traffic light.
Key Takeaways
-
Sentences are classified functionally into Declarative, Interrogative, Imperative, Exclamatory, and Optative categories based on their communicative purpose.
Direct interrogative sentences require subject-auxiliary inversion, whereas indirect embedded question clauses must retain standard declarative subject-verb word order.
Imperative sentences omit the implied subject “you” and open with the base verb, while optative sentences express wishes and prayers using “May” followed by the base verb.
Structurally, sentences are categorized into Simple (one independent clause), Compound (multiple independent clauses), Complex (one independent and at least one dependent clause), and Compound-Complex (multiple independent clauses and at least one dependent clause).
Independent clauses in compound sentences must be linked by a comma with a coordinating conjunction, a semicolon, or a conjunctive adverb to avoid comma splices and run-on sentences.
Introductory negative adverbials such as hardly, scarcely, and no sooner require subject-auxiliary inversion in the main clause, pairing strictly with when or than.
தொடக்கத்தில் வரும் hardly, scarcely மற்றும் no sooner போன்ற எதிர்மறை வினையடைகள் முதன்மை வாக்கியக் கூறில் Subject-Auxiliary Inversion அமைப்பைக் கோருகின்றன; மேலும் இவை கண்டிப்பாக when அல்லது than உடன் மட்டுமே இணைய வேண்டும். hardly, scarcely और no sooner जैसे प्रारंभिक नकारात्मक क्रियाविशेषणों के लिए मुख्य clause में subject-auxiliary inversion की आवश्यकता होती है, जो सख्ती से when या than के साथ जोड़े जाते हैं।
In the next lesson, we will begin our study of Nouns by exploring their functional categorization into proper, common, collective, abstract, and material nouns.
