Phrase versus Clause Identification: Structural and Functional Mechanics
Master the structural and functional differences between phrases and clauses in English syntax. Learn noun, verb, and prepositional phrases, along with independent and dependent clauses.
The Building Blocks of Thought
Every English sentence is an assembly of meaningful parts. In the previous lesson, we analyzed how a subject, a verb, and an object form the core skeleton of communication. Yet, when you listen to native speakers or read sophisticated English prose, sentences rarely consist of only three single words. They expand, adding rich context, sharp descriptions, and detailed conditions.
To master how longer sentences work, you must look beneath the surface and examine the two distinct structural groupings that form every sentence: Phrases and Clauses.
Knowing whether a group of words is a phrase or a clause is the single most reliable skill in English syntax. It reveals which parts of a sentence can stand on their own feet, which parts merely add supporting detail, and how complex ideas connect without crumbling into fragments or run-on sentences.
What is a Phrase?
Imagine hearing someone say the following words: in the early morning, a cup of hot chai, or is walking quickly.
Each of these word clusters makes sense to you, but none of them delivers a complete message. You immediately want to ask: Who is in the early morning? What happened to the cup of chai? Who is walking quickly?
These clusters of related words are called Phrases.
A Phrase is a group of two or more words that functions together as a single grammatical unit, but lacks a subject-verb pair. Because it does not contain a subject performing a finite action, a phrase can never express a complete thought, and it can never stand alone as a sentence.
In Indian grammatical traditions, this concept is completely familiar:
- In Hindi, a phrase is known as a पदबंध (Padbandh) or वाक्यांश (Vakyansh), representing words bound together without an independent subject-predicate link.
- In Tamil, it is known as a சொற்றொடர் (Sotrodar), functioning as a linked group of words that acts as a single structural element.
தமிழில், இது ஒரே அமைப்புக் கூறாகச் செயல்படும் சொற்களின் இணைப்புக் குழுவான சொற்றொடர் (Sotrodar) என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறது. तमिल में, इसे சொற்றொடர் (Sotrodar) के रूप में जाना जाता है, जो जुड़े हुए शब्दों के एक ऐसे समूह के रूप में कार्य करता है जो एक एकल संरचनात्मक घटक का काम करता है।
The Five Primary Types of Phrases
Every phrase takes its identity from its head word, which is the anchor word that governs the function of the entire group. In English, there are five primary categories of phrases.
1. Noun Phrase (NP)
A Noun Phrase consists of a noun or pronoun together with all the words that describe or point to it. The entire group behaves like a single noun, acting as a subject, an object, or a complement in a sentence.
- The talented young cricketer scored a century. (Functions as the subject)
The talented young cricketer scored a century. (Subject-ஆகச் செயல்படுகிறது) The talented young cricketer scored a century. (Subject के रूप में कार्य करता है) - Priya adopted a friendly stray puppy. (Functions as the direct object)
Priya adopted a friendly stray puppy. (நேரடி செயப்படுபொருளாக - Direct Object செயல்படுகிறது) Priya adopted a friendly stray puppy. (Direct Object के रूप में कार्य करता है) - We visited an ancient temple near Madurai. (Functions as the object of a preposition)
We visited an ancient temple near Madurai. (ஒரு Preposition-ன் செயப்படுபொருளாக - Object of a Preposition செயல்படுகிறது) We visited an ancient temple near Madurai. (Preposition के Object के रूप में कार्य करता है)
In each sentence, the entire highlighted group can be replaced by a single pronoun such as he, it, or them, proving that the entire cluster operates as a unified unit.
2. Verb Phrase (VP)
A Verb Phrase consists of a main lexical verb combined with one or more auxiliary (helping) verbs. It expresses the complete action, state, or tense of the clause.
- The train has arrived at Kanpur Central.
ரயில் கான்பூர் சென்ட்ரலை வந்தடைந்துள்ளது (has arrived). ट्रेन कानपुर सेंट्रल पहुंच चुकी है (has arrived)। - The students were preparing for their semester presentations.
மாணவர்கள் தங்கள் செமஸ்டர் விளக்கக்காட்சிகளுக்குத் தயாராகிக் கொண்டிருந்தார்கள் (were preparing). छात्र अपने सेमेस्टर प्रस्तुतियों की तैयारी कर रहे थे (were preparing)। - Deepa must have been sleeping when the courier arrived.
கூரியர் வந்தபோது தீபா தூங்கிக் கொண்டுதான் இருந்திருக்க வேண்டும் (must have been sleeping). जब कूरियर आया, तब दीपा ज़रूर सो रही होगी (must have been sleeping)।
Notice that a verb phrase includes only verbs and their helping verbs. It does not include the subject or the object.
3. Prepositional Phrase (PP)
A Prepositional Phrase begins with a preposition and ends with a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase, known as the object of the preposition.
Prepositional phrases are versatile tools in sentence building. Depending on their position and role, they function either adjectivally or adverbially:
- The book on the wooden shelf belongs to Vikram. (Adjectival function: tells us which book)
The book on the wooden shelf belongs to Vikram. (பெயரடை செயல்பாடு - Adjectival function: எந்த புத்தகம் என்று கூறுகிறது) The book on the wooden shelf belongs to Vikram. (विशेषण कार्य: यह बताता है कि कौन-सी किताब) - Ananya placed the keys on the wooden shelf. (Adverbial function: tells us where she placed them)
Ananya placed the keys on the wooden shelf. (வினையடை செயல்பாடு - Adverbial function: சாவிகளை எங்கே வைத்தாள் என்று கூறுகிறது) Ananya placed the keys on the wooden shelf. (क्रियाविशेषण कार्य: यह बताता है कि उसने उन्हें कहाँ रखा)
4. Adjective Phrase (AdjP)
An Adjective Phrase is a group of words headed by an adjective that modifies a noun or a pronoun. It provides detailed description regarding quality, appearance, or state.
- The tea was refreshingly hot and sweet. (Modifies the noun tea)
The tea was refreshingly hot and sweet. (tea என்ற Noun-ஐ விவரிக்கிறது) The tea was refreshingly hot and sweet. (Noun tea की विशेषता बताता है) - Suresh bought a bag full of ripe mangoes. (Modifies the noun bag)
Suresh bought a bag full of ripe mangoes. (bag என்ற Noun-ஐ விவரிக்கிறது) Suresh bought a bag full of ripe mangoes. (Noun bag की विशेषता बताता है) - She looked extremely calm under pressure. (Modifies the pronoun she)
She looked extremely calm under pressure. (she என்ற Pronoun-ஐ விவரிக்கிறது) She looked extremely calm under pressure. (Pronoun she की विशेषता बताता है)
5. Adverb Phrase (AdvP)
An Adverb Phrase is a group of words headed by an adverb, or functioning as an adverb, that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. It clarifies manner (how), time (when), place (where), or degree (to what extent).
- The autorickshaw driver negotiated the crowded street very skillfully. (Manner: modifies negotiated)
The autorickshaw driver negotiated the crowded street very skillfully. (விதம் - Manner: negotiated என்பதை விவரிக்கிறது) The autorickshaw driver negotiated the crowded street very skillfully. (रीति/Manner: negotiated की विशेषता बताता है) - We will assemble near the gate quite early in the morning. (Time: modifies will assemble)
We will assemble near the gate quite early in the morning. (நேரம் - Time: will assemble என்பதை விவரிக்கிறது) We will assemble near the gate quite early in the morning. (समय/Time: will assemble की विशेषता बताता है) - He spoke much too loudly. (Degree: modifies too loudly)
He spoke much too loudly. (அளவு/தீவிரம் - Degree: too loudly என்பதை விவரிக்கிறது) He spoke much too loudly. (परिमाण/Degree: too loudly की विशेषता बताता है)
What is a Clause?
Now examine a different type of word group: Ravi opened the umbrella, or because the rain started suddenly.
Unlike phrases, both of these groups contain a distinct Subject (Ravi, the rain) and a distinct Finite Verb (opened, started).
A group of words that contains both a subject and a predicate (a finite verb) is called a Clause.
In Indian linguistic frameworks, this unit has a clear equivalent:
- In Hindi, it is known as an उपवाक्य (Upavakya), representing a sentence division with its own उद्देश्य (subject) and विधेय (predicate).
- In Tamil, it is known as an உபவாக்கியம் (Upavaakkiyam) or உட்பிரிவு (Utpirivu), containing an explicit or implied subject paired with an action verb.
While all clauses share the subject-verb engine, they do not all behave the same way. English divides clauses into two major structural families: Independent Clauses and Dependent Clauses.
Independent (Main) Clauses
An Independent Clause (also called a Main Clause) contains a subject and a finite verb, expresses a complete thought, and makes sense by itself. It possesses full syntactical autonomy and can stand alone as a complete sentence with a period at the end.
- Sunita solved the complex puzzle.
Sunita solved the complex puzzle. (சுனிதா அந்தச் சிக்கலான புதிருக்கு விடை கண்டாள்.) सुनीता ने जटिल पहेली हल कर दी। - The train stopped at the signal.
The train stopped at the signal. (ரயில் சிக்னலில் நின்றது.) ट्रेन सिग्नल पर रुक गई। - Electricity returned after midnight.
Electricity returned after midnight. (நள்ளிரவுக்குப் பிறகு மின்சாரம் மீண்டும் வந்தது.) आधी रात के बाद बिजली लौट आई।
In Hindi grammar, this corresponds to the प्रधान उपवाक्य (Pradhan Upavakya), and in Tamil, it corresponds to the முதன்மை உபவாக்கியம் (Mudhanmai Upavaakkiyam). When you speak in simple, direct sentences, you are speaking in independent clauses.
Dependent (Subordinate) Clauses
A Dependent Clause (also called a Subordinate Clause) also contains a subject and a finite verb, but it cannot stand alone as a sentence. It leaves the thought unfinished, creating an expectation for more information.
Look at what happens when we attach a single connector to an independent clause:
- The rain started suddenly. (Independent: complete thought)
The rain started suddenly. (Independent: முழுமையான எண்ணம்) The rain started suddenly. (Independent: पूर्ण विचार) - Because the rain started suddenly… (Dependent: incomplete thought; what happened next?)
Because the rain started suddenly… (Dependent: முழுமையடையாத எண்ணம்; அடுத்து என்ன நடந்தது?) Because the rain started suddenly… (Dependent: अधूरा विचार; इसके बाद क्या हुआ?)
The moment the connector because is attached, the clause becomes subordinate. It relies on a main clause to complete its meaning:
- Because the rain started suddenly, Ravi opened the umbrella.
Because the rain started suddenly, Ravi opened the umbrella. (மழை திடீரெனப் பெய்யத் தொடங்கியதால், ரவி குடையைத் திறந்தான்.) चूंकि अचानक बारिश शुरू हो गई, इसलिए रवि ने छाता खोल लिया।
In Hindi, a dependent clause is termed an आश्रित उपवाक्य (Aashrit Upavakya), and in Tamil, it is termed a சார்பு உபவாக்கியம் (Saarbu Upavaakkiyam).
Subordinate Markers: The Anchors of Dependence
What makes a clause dependent? A dependent clause almost always begins with a special connector called a Subordinate Marker.
The moment a subordinate marker attaches to the beginning of an independent clause, it strips the clause of its ability to stand alone. There are two primary classes of subordinate markers.
1. Subordinating Conjunctions
A Subordinating Conjunction links a dependent clause to an independent clause and explains the relationship between them (such as time, cause, condition, or contrast).
| Relationship | Subordinating Conjunctions | Example in Context |
|---|---|---|
| Time | after, before, when, while, since, until, once, as soon as | We waited at the station until the rain stopped. |
| Cause and Reason | because, since, as, so that | He missed the meeting because his flight was delayed. |
| Condition | if, unless, provided that, even if | Unless you submit the documents, the bank cannot approve the loan. |
| Concession and Contrast | although, though, even though, whereas, while | Although the task was difficult, the team delivered it on schedule. |
(Note: The comprehensive classification and advanced usage rules of conjunctions are detailed in Chapter 13.)
2. Relative Pronouns
A Relative Pronoun introduces a dependent clause that describes a noun or pronoun mentioned earlier in the sentence. Unlike subordinating conjunctions, a relative pronoun often serves a dual role: it connects the clause and simultaneously acts as the subject or object inside that clause.
The most common relative pronouns are who, whom, whose, which, and that.
- The teacher who guided our research project received a national award. (The clause describes teacher)
The teacher who guided our research project received a national award. (இந்த Clause teacher என்பதை விவரிக்கிறது) The teacher who guided our research project received a national award. (उपवाक्य teacher का वर्णन करता है) - The laptop that you recommended works smoothly. (The clause describes laptop)
The laptop that you recommended works smoothly. (இந்த Clause laptop என்பதை விவரிக்கிறது) The laptop that you recommended works smoothly. (उपवाक्य laptop का वर्णन करता है) - The artisan whose handicraft was displayed at the exhibition lives in Varanasi. (The clause describes artisan)
The artisan whose handicraft was displayed at the exhibition lives in Varanasi. (இந்த Clause artisan என்பதை விவரிக்கிறது) The artisan whose handicraft was displayed at the exhibition lives in Varanasi. (उपवाक्य artisan का वर्णन करता है)
(Note: The syntactical cases and antecedent agreement mechanics of relative pronouns are explored in depth in Chapter 4.)
Analogy · The Railway Express Expand analogy
Think of sentence architecture like an Indian passenger train. An Independent Clause is a self-powered locomotive engine; it possesses complete machinery and can move along the track entirely on its own. A Dependent Clause is a passenger carriage; it has wheels and seating, but because it has a coupling hitch (a subordinate marker) at the front, it cannot travel down the track without an engine pulling it. A Phrase is the luggage stored inside the carriage; it has neither engine nor wheels, existing solely to add necessary contents and detail within the moving train.
Structural Comparison at a Glance
To quickly distinguish between these three syntactical entities, compare their properties side by side:
| Property | Phrase | Independent Clause | Dependent Clause |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contains a Subject? | No | Yes | Yes |
| Contains a Finite Verb? | No | Yes | Yes |
| Expresses a Complete Thought? | No | Yes | No |
| Can Stand Alone as a Sentence? | No | Yes | No |
| Introduced by Subordinate Marker? | No (prepositions introduce prepositional phrases) | No | Yes (conjunctions or relative pronouns) |
| Structural Role | Fills a single slot (noun, adjective, adverb) | Forms the foundation of a sentence | Adds contextual conditions or descriptions |
Diagnostic Tests for Syntactical Isolation
When reading long and dense sentences, words appear in continuous streams. To isolate phrases and clauses with mathematical precision, apply these four diagnostic tests.
Test 1: The Finite Verb Count
The most reliable rule in sentence parsing states that every finite verb anchors exactly one clause. Therefore, the number of finite verbs in a sentence equals the number of clauses.
- Scan the sentence and count every verb that shows tense, person, or number.
வாக்கியத்தை உற்றுநோக்கி, காலம் (Tense), தன்மை/முன்னிலை/படர்க்கை (Person) அல்லது எண் (Number) ஆகியவற்றைக் காட்டும் ஒவ்வொரு வினைச்சொல்லையும் எண்ணுங்கள். वाक्य को ध्यान से देखें और काल (tense), पुरुष (person), या वचन (number) दर्शाने वाली प्रत्येक क्रिया की गणना करें। - Group the subject with its corresponding finite verb.
Subject-ஐ அதனுடன் தொடர்புடைய Finite Verb-உடன் குழுவாக்குங்கள். Subject को उसकी संबंधित Finite Verb के साथ समूहित करें। - Any word cluster that lacks a finite verb is automatically a phrase, not a clause.
Finite Verb இல்லாத எந்தவொரு சொல் தொகுதியும் தானாகவே ஒரு Phrase ஆகும், Clause அல்ல. शब्दों का कोई भी ऐसा समूह जिसमें Finite Verb नहीं होती, वह स्वतः ही एक Phrase होता है, Clause नहीं।
Consider this example:
During the heavy monsoon downpour, the municipal workers cleared the blocked drainage channels.
During the heavy monsoon downpour, the municipal workers cleared the blocked drainage channels. (கனமழைக் காலப் பொழிவின் போது, நகராட்சிப் பணியாளர்கள் அடைபட்ட வடிகால்வாய்களைத் தூர்வாரிச் சீரமைத்தனர்.) भारी मानसूनी बारिश के दौरान, नगरपालिका कर्मचारियों ने बंद नालों को साफ किया।
Let us apply the test:
- Verb check: cleared is the only finite verb (past tense).
வினைச்சொல் சரிபார்ப்பு: cleared என்பது மட்டுமே இங்குள்ள ஒரே Finite Verb (இறந்த காலம்). Verb की जांच: केवल cleared ही Finite Verb है (भूतकाल / Past Tense)। - Subject check: the municipal workers is the subject performing the clearing.
எழுவாய் சரிபார்ப்பு: the municipal workers என்பது தூய்மைப்படுத்தும் செயலைச் செய்யும் Subject ஆகும். Subject की जांच: the municipal workers सफाई का कार्य करने वाला Subject है। - Word group check: During the heavy monsoon downpour has no verb at all; it is a prepositional phrase showing time.
சொல் தொகுதி சரிபார்ப்பு: During the heavy monsoon downpour என்பதில் எந்த வினைச்சொல்லும் இல்லை; இது நேரத்தைக் காட்டும் ஒரு Prepositional Phrase ஆகும். शब्द समूह की जांच: During the heavy monsoon downpour में कोई क्रिया नहीं है; यह समय दर्शाने वाला Prepositional Phrase है। - Conclusion: The sentence contains exactly one clause (the municipal workers cleared the blocked drainage channels) accompanied by two phrases (During the heavy monsoon downpour and the blocked drainage channels).
முடிவு: இந்த வாக்கியத்தில் இரண்டு Phrases (During the heavy monsoon downpour மற்றும் the blocked drainage channels) உடன் சரியாக ஒரே ஒரு Clause (the municipal workers cleared the blocked drainage channels) மட்டுமே உள்ளது. निष्कर्ष: इस वाक्य में ठीक एक Clause (the municipal workers cleared the blocked drainage channels) और दो Phrases (During the heavy monsoon downpour तथा the blocked drainage channels) शामिल हैं।
Test 2: The Stand-Alone Test
To determine whether a clause is independent or dependent, isolate it from the surrounding sentence and read it aloud.
Consider this complex sentence:
Although the power grid failed, the hospital generators functioned smoothly.
Although the power grid failed, the hospital generators functioned smoothly. (மின்கட்டமைப்பு செயலிழந்த போதிலும், மருத்துவமனை ஜெனரேட்டர்கள் சீராக இயங்கின.) यद्यपि पावर ग्रिड विफल हो गया, अस्पताल के जनरेटर सुचारू रूप से कार्य करते रहे।
Let us isolate both halves:
- Half A: Although the power grid failed. (Leaves the listener waiting for resolution. It cannot stand alone; it is a Dependent Clause.)
பகுதி A: Although the power grid failed. (கேட்பவரை அடுத்த முடிவுக்காகக் காத்திருக்க வைக்கிறது. இது தனியாக நிற்க முடியாது; இது ஒரு Dependent Clause.) हिस्सा A: Although the power grid failed. (यह श्रोता को समाधान की प्रतीक्षा में छोड़ देता है। यह अकेले नहीं आ सकता; यह एक Dependent Clause है।) - Half B: The hospital generators functioned smoothly. (Delivers a complete, satisfying statement. It stands alone perfectly; it is an Independent Clause.)
பகுதி B: The hospital generators functioned smoothly. (ஒரு முழுமையான, திருப்திகரமான கூற்றை வழங்குகிறது. இது தனியாக மிகச் சரியாக நிற்கிறது; இது ஓர் Independent Clause.) हिस्सा B: The hospital generators functioned smoothly. (यह एक पूर्ण और संतोषजनक कथन प्रस्तुत करता है। यह स्वतंत्र रूप से अकेले आ सकता है; यह एक Independent Clause है।)
Test 3: The Subordinate Marker Removal Test
If you suspect a word group is a dependent clause, locate its opening word. If removing that word immediately transforms the group into a grammatically complete, stand-alone sentence, the group is definitively a dependent clause.
- Dependent clause: Because Neha practiced diligently
சார்பு உபவாக்கியம் (Dependent clause): Because Neha practiced diligently Dependent clause: Because Neha practiced diligently - Remove Because: Neha practiced diligently.
Because என்பதை நீக்குங்கள்: Neha practiced diligently. Because को हटाएँ: Neha practiced diligently. - Result: The clause instantly becomes an independent sentence. This proves that the dependency was created entirely by the subordinate marker.
Test 4: The Substitution Test
To verify the boundaries of a phrase, attempt to replace the entire suspected group with a single pro-form (such as a pronoun for noun phrases, or an adverb like there or then for prepositional phrases).
Consider this sentence:
The elderly gentleman with a walking stick crossed the busy intersection.
The elderly gentleman with a walking stick crossed the busy intersection. (கைத்தடி வைத்திருந்த முதியவர் பரபரப்பான குறுக்குச்சாலையைக் கடந்தார்.) छड़ी लिए हुए बुजुर्ग सज्जन ने व्यस्त चौराहे को पार किया।
Let us test the units:
- Replace The elderly gentleman with a walking stick with He:
The elderly gentleman with a walking stick என்பதற்குப் பதிலாக He என்பதை மாற்றி அமையுங்கள்: The elderly gentleman with a walking stick को He से बदलें: - He crossed the busy intersection. (The sentence remains completely grammatical, proving the entire group functions as a single compound Noun Phrase.)
He crossed the busy intersection. (வாக்கியம் முற்றிலும் இலக்கண அமைதியுடன் உள்ளது; இது முழுக் குழுவும் ஒரு கூட்டு Noun Phrase-ஆகச் செயல்படுவதை நிரூபிக்கிறது.) He crossed the busy intersection. (वाक्य पूरी तरह से व्याकरणिक बना रहता है, जो यह साबित करता है कि पूरा समूह एक एकल संयुक्त Noun Phrase के रूप में कार्य करता है।)
- He crossed the busy intersection. (The sentence remains completely grammatical, proving the entire group functions as a single compound Noun Phrase.)
- Replace across the busy intersection with there:
across the busy intersection என்பதற்குப் பதிலாக there என்பதை மாற்றி அமையுங்கள்: across the busy intersection को there से बदलें: - He crossed there. (The replacement works, proving that the prepositional unit behaves as a single Adverbial Phrase.)
He crossed there. (இந்த மாற்றீடு சரியாகப் பொருந்துகிறது; இது அந்த Prepositional அலகு ஒரு Adverbial Phrase-ஆகச் செயல்படுவதை நிரூபிக்கிறது.) He crossed there. (यह प्रतिस्थापन सही बैठता है, जो यह साबित करता है कि यह Prepositional इकाई एक एकल Adverbial Phrase की तरह व्यवहार करती है।)
- He crossed there. (The replacement works, proving that the prepositional unit behaves as a single Adverbial Phrase.)
Common Structural Traps in Sentence Analysis
Even experienced writers occasionally confuse phrases with clauses due to surface similarities. Understanding these two common traps ensures complete clarity.
1. The Non-Finite Verb Confusion
Words ending in -ing (participles or gerunds) or starting with to (infinitives) look like verbs, but they do not function as finite verbs unless accompanied by an auxiliary verb (such as is, was, or has been).
- Walking through the botanical garden… (This group has no finite verb and no subject; it is a Participial Phrase, not a clause.)
Walking through the botanical garden… (இந்தக் குழுவில் Finite Verb மற்றும் Subject இல்லை; இது ஒரு Participial Phrase ஆகும், Clause அல்ல.) Walking through the botanical garden… (इस समूह में न तो कोई Finite Verb है और न ही कोई Subject; यह एक Participial Phrase है, Clause नहीं।) - Ramesh was walking through the botanical garden. (Now was walking provides tense and subject agreement; this is an Independent Clause.)
Ramesh was walking through the botanical garden. (இப்போது was walking என்பது காலத்தையும் எழுவாய் உடன்பாட்டையும் வழங்குகிறது; இது ஓர் Independent Clause ஆகும்.) Ramesh was walking through the botanical garden. (यहाँ was walking काल और Subject के साथ सामंजस्य प्रदान करता है; यह एक Independent Clause है।)
2. Dual-Role Prepositions and Conjunctions
Several connecting words, such as after, before, since, and until, can function either as prepositions or as subordinating conjunctions depending on what follows them.
- Before the sunset (Followed only by a noun phrase; this is a Prepositional Phrase.)
Before the sunset (ஒரு Noun Phrase மட்டுமே தொடர்ந்து வருகிறது; இது ஒரு Prepositional Phrase ஆகும்.) Before the sunset (इसके बाद केवल एक Noun Phrase आता है; यह एक Prepositional Phrase है।) - Before the sun set behind the hills (Contains a subject the sun and a finite verb set; this is a Dependent Clause.)
Before the sun set behind the hills (the sun என்ற Subject மற்றும் set என்ற Finite Verb ஆகியவற்றைக் கொண்டுள்ளது; இது ஒரு Dependent Clause ஆகும்.) Before the sun set behind the hills (इसमें Subject the sun और Finite Verb set शामिल हैं; यह एक Dependent Clause है।)
To verify the role, always search for a finite verb following the connector. If there is no finite verb, the unit is a phrase.
Key Takeaways
- A phrase is a group of related words that functions as a single grammatical unit without a subject-verb pair.
ஒரு Phrase என்பது எழுவாய்-வினைச்சொல் ஜோடி இல்லாமல், ஒற்றை இலக்கண அலகாகச் செயல்படும் தொடர்புடைய சொற்களின் குழுவாகும். Phrase संबंधित शब्दों का एक ऐसा समूह है जो Subject-Verb की जोड़ी के बिना एक एकल व्याकरणिक इकाई के रूप में कार्य करता है। - A clause is a structural unit that contains both a subject and a finite predicate verb.
ஒரு Clause என்பது ஒரு Subject மற்றும் ஒரு Finite Predicate Verb ஆகிய இரண்டையும் கொண்டிருக்கும் ஓர் அமைப்புக் கூறாகும். Clause एक ऐसी संरचनात्मक इकाई है जिसमें Subject और Finite Predicate Verb दोनों शामिल होते हैं। - An independent clause expresses a complete thought and can stand alone as a grammatical sentence.
ஓர் Independent Clause ஒரு முழுமையான எண்ணத்தை வெளிப்படுத்துகிறது மற்றும் ஓர் இலக்கண வாக்கியமாகத் தனியாக நிற்க முடியும். एक Independent Clause एक पूर्ण विचार व्यक्त करता है और एक व्याकरणिक वाक्य के रूप में अकेले आ सकता है। - A dependent clause begins with a subordinate marker, preventing it from standing alone despite containing a subject and a verb.
ஒரு Dependent Clause ஆனது ஒரு Subordinate Marker-உடன் தொடங்குகிறது; இது ஒரு Subject மற்றும் Verb-ஐக் கொண்டிருந்தாலும் தனியாக நிற்பதைத் தடுக்கிறது. एक Dependent Clause एक Subordinate Marker से शुरू होता है, जो Subject और Verb होने के बावजूद इसे अकेले खड़े रहने से रोकता है। - Subordinating conjunctions establish relationships of time, cause, condition, or contrast, while relative pronouns describe preceding nouns.
Subordinating conjunctions நேரம், காரணம், நிபந்தனை அல்லது முரண்பாடு போன்ற தொடர்புகளை நிறுவுகின்றன; Relative pronouns முந்தைய Nouns-ஐ விவரிக்கின்றன. Subordinating conjunctions समय, कारण, शर्त, या विरोध के संबंध स्थापित करते हैं, जबकि Relative Pronouns पूर्ववर्ती Nouns का वर्णन करते हैं। - The total number of clauses in any sentence directly matches the number of finite verbs present.
எந்தவொரு வாக்கியத்திலும் உள்ள Clauses-ன் மொத்த எண்ணிக்கை அதில் உள்ள Finite Verbs-ன் எண்ணிக்கைக்கு நேரடியாகப் பொருந்துகிறது. किसी भी वाक्य में Clauses की कुल संख्या सीधे उसमें उपस्थित Finite Verbs की संख्या से मेल खाती है।
In the next lesson, we will explore the Types of Sentences, examining how independent and dependent clauses combine to form simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex structures, alongside their communicative functions.
